possibly going back to school

  • so, i have to convince the wife that it is a good idea (i have gone back to k'wood a couple times since we have been together and it hasn't yielded much except student loan debt, so she is skeptical that I would find something that i actually enjoy, and would work in the area i go into).

i am looking at k'wood again, looking at the "Computer Information Systems" 2 year program
or the "computer science" program that is designed to transfer to a 4 year institution after the 2 yrs at k'wood.

so, with that said, I really don't know if i have it in me at this age to go back for four more years (especially after getting out of the work full time, school full time grind a few years ago (i got laid off from the job i got while in school actually doing what i went to school for).

i am wondering if the information systems program will put me in the same boat as the last time, where I get done but all the jobs out there want people with a bunch of experience and there is plenty of people with more experience that it is hard to get a foot in the door. or if i go that route and later on down the career road if i decide to pursue a 4 year taking a class here or there if I would have to start for scratch, or if this would carry over a bulk of the classes?

any IT guys got any info for me that would help me do some convincing to the wife so that i can be confident I am not wasting more time and money?

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • How old are you? Any kids? I don't know about a 2 year degree, I graduated last December and the job hunt was brutal. Employers are looking for a 4 year minimum, preferably a master's for a lot of jobs, plus work experience. I got my degree in Statistics which I thought would open a lot of doors, it landed me a solid job, but I applied for a couple hundred jobs over 6 months. I had a lot of phone interviews, but only a handful were serious about me and went any further than that. I think a 4 year degree in Computer Science would definitely open some doors for you, not sure what a 2 year degree would do for you.

and part of me says if I go back, just do it right this time and hit the 4 years....the thought of that much time, money, effort and still working full time just makes me think fingergun

2 years at kwood would run probably around 8 grand...there are a few courses that i could eliminate right away because i have taken them previously. and i would try to get a Pell grant also (although, i don't know how easy it would be to get that...i just know a few people who have been awarded one)

But you're talking about transferring and doing more at a 4 year, right? I really don't know, I just have worked in the IT world for a while, but I'm not on the technical side of it.

well, that is what i am trying to decide...they Computer Information Systems is just a 2 year AAS
the computer science is 2 years and they have agreements with 8 schools to transfer to a 4 year program to start your third year.

if I could have an easy time finding some work with the 2 year, i would just prefer to do that....but if it going to be as hard finding a job as it is for me now, i might as well go the 4 yr route. that is what i am trying to figure out, if it would be pretty easy in the IT field to get some employment with the 2 year.

Now, another thing, i also need to find out if i go the 2 year route, and then later on decide to go to a 4 year, am i starting the 4 year program from scratch...or if I decide to do the computer science, would it be possible to gain some employment while i am at school working with what i am going to school for?

Man, I don't know what to tell you. Anything you're specifically interested in with IT?

    shrug fixin' shi*

i did take some programming classes a while back about 10 years ago, and it seemed pretty tedious, so I don't know if i necessarily would want to do a whole lot of that (although i have heard java and other web programming isn't too horrible?)

A good friend of mine is a programmer. I can ask, if that's something you're be interested in and see what he says. Are you talking more IT support?

Software development is big, too. Have you thought about that?

well, i was thinking of more than being "help desk" which they have a seperate program for that. I was thinking systems analyst type of stuff. I think there is some programming classes involved in the Computer Information Systems program. maybe you can ask him and see if he would know the differences between the computer science and computer information systems and his opinions on this whole thing shrug

goodness knows I do enough with my parents computers as well as i am pretty much the IT guy for my wifes family.

  • Are you even interested in the stuff, or are you just in a rut and want to do something else? I'm not being a dick, because I'm in the same place and have no idea what I want to do. I've thought about going back to school, but I don't know if it's even worth the time and money.

well, the way i look at it is if i knew it was exactly what i wanted to do, i would be doing it already. i did go take some classes a while back for programming but the teacher was boring as all get out and very hard to learn from and it seemed pretty tedious...

but at this point, I have been hating my job for 2 years, and my door ain't being beat down with job offers or calls for interviews

I don't know if I'd say I have a true passion for the work I'm doing, but I really do enjoy my work. I don't mind getting up in the morning and my days fly by.

rob - if there are certain jobs you are interested in, i would recommend searching for job openings for those type of positions and see what they are requiring for education/experience. If there are positions that are only looking for 2 year degrees then great, but I think you're going to see a lot more looking for 4 years + experience.
