Wolf-Need Your Input

  • My 9 year old nephew fainted at school this morning. They immediately took him to the pediatrician and the blood work turned out fine, but they sent him in for an EKG.

After the EKG, they scheduled him tomorrow for a sonogram of his heart. They think there is a chance he has a thickening of a muscle wall in his heart.

How serious could this be? I'm all sorts of worried.

  • megaphone WOLF. I'm worried, man. Give me some relief that it's no big deal. I just got this email from my mom-

When I first saw Corbet (my nephew) and asked how he was he said "oh fine" and I didn't ask about his fainting. At the end he came over and he said, "Boy that was mystery." I thought he was talking about the ceremony and I asked him what and he said, "my passing out." Then told me he was sitting in his chair and moved his head up quick and the next thing he knew he was on the floor. He doesn't remember anything and the teacher (they had conferences tonight and got to talk with her) said he scared the class to death and that he had a little tremor before he went down.

Anyway, they called the nurse in and Corbet doesn't remember any of that until he woke up in the nurse's office.

The pediatrician said to get him to the office right away and thought it was a fluke after blood tests, etc. but sent him for an EKG. They said they'd read it and get back to them next week. They called Howard(my brother in law/Corbet's dad) an hour later and said they might have seen something blocking one of the walls of the heart and he needed to get to a pediatric cardiologist. They called and said to be there at noon tomorrow they didn't want to wait until next week.

  • Used to happen to my cousin and happened to me a few times. I would get really lightheaded from time to time and everything would get dark, only actually passed out a few times from it though. One time I remember I was around 7th grade I think and I was reaching in the cupboard for a glass and the next thing, my mom was waking my up on the kitchen floor. I remember it felt like I was in a deep sleep and had been dreaming for a long time, but she said I was only out for maybe a minute. Anyways, went to the doctor, nothing was wrong. Same with my cousin that had it.

I hope you're right, Barry. I said in the Fish pond crew that I can't imagine being a parent if I worry about this so much.

  • I'm not that well read on ped. cardio. But in general an enlarge wall could have some issues with getting enough blood flow to the entire width of the wall. If prolonged, those cells could die and cause a heart attack.

A thickened wall would also cause a smaller volume in the chamber, so the heart would have to pump more to maintain output. A bigger, stretched out wall won't have the volume restriction issues, but it would weaken the muscle and make it harder to pump.

I know it's troubling, but it could be a lot of things, try not to get too worked up until they have their appointment.

Sorry I haven't been around much. Had a big test yesterday and drank a lot last night with classmates.

Perk, settle down friend. There are a lot of very good doctors in Iowa who have graduated from college and have a medical license. Your little nephew will get good care.

You may be the one who needs a cardiologist if you don't settle.

hopefully it ain't anything too serious with your nephew, perk. if they had immediate concerns, they would probably already have him getting checked out today.

as for the shirt, i checked out the site...there would be a couple shirts i would be interested in when i get some extra $, but damn...i know wolf is a husky guy and all, but i have a hard time taking spending money on one that is smaller than the size i normally wear....they have no shirts for the uber homegrown fattys?

He's in for his sonogram as we speak.

As far as the shirts, I had an 2X that I was able to send Wolf. They run really small, so I'm curious if it will fit him, because I've met Wolf in person and he's a big dude.

    I wear a XL in those and I'm 5'10" 190.

ahhh, i see the original post was posted yesterday....i didn't look at that and thought this thread was started yesterday.

i would be curious to see if wolf will fit in one as well....i like the concept, and it's too bad they didn't have someone to sell those in CR at the Newbo City Market that opened up this past year or something

  • Just got this email from my mom, so hopefully waiting until Monday means there were no immediate concerns and it sounds like Corbet is in good spirits-

"Megan (my sister) just stopped to get Aris (my niece). Said they did a sonogram and would get back to her Doctor. She said her doc is gone this afternoon so they wouldn't know anything until Monday, but she may call this afternoon to see if they know anything. Corbet was quite fascinated with watching his heart beat and described it in great detail to me."

  • woot

Just got off the phone with my sis and apparently the EKG was a false positive and the little guy's heart is just fine. They're not sure what caused the fainting or tremor, but said it could be a number of things, including just being overstimulated and they see it all the time and said it was probably not a seizure. Hopefully that's the case.

I'm still worried, but feeling better and appreciate the kind words. cheers to all of ya.
