  • I was CAD drafting before my layoff. spent about 9 months unemployed until I accepted a part time position in a hospital storeroom.

part time has since turned to full time, but am still trying to get out of here.
problem is with the drafting, there aren't many jobs out there to begin with, and most jobs want twice the amount of experience I have. with all the people applying for those jobs, chances are that I will never work as a drafter (one job, they had 48 people apply for). the money I spent on tuition going through the program at Kirkwood would've been just as useful if it was flushed down the toilet.

and I am sure they are still churning students through that program.

that's nothing. a lot of the jobs i applied for told you online how many applications they had received. i don't think one of them was less than 80. i applied for about 200 jobs over 6 months and about 25-30 of them told me how many people had applied.

i understand the job market is tough, but there are jobs out there, people just have to be willing to put the work into looking for them. i started applying about 6 months before graduating so a lot of my applications were probably tossed right away (if they were even looked at at all) because they were looking to fill the position before i would graduate. but, i was lucky and the job i landed was one i originally applied for in august.

the chances of the majority of them having more experience than I are really good. i probably don't hear back from 99.999% of the drafting jobs that i apply for, and there aren't that many to begin with.

we just had a manager transfer to a different department and he is now listed as a systems analyst. he has no IT experience, and while he is going to Iowa, it is not for anything IT related. maybe i just need to start applying for random ish that I am nowhere near qualified for and see if anything sticks. I rarely hear anything on the jobs that i apply for that i am qualified for.

I'm vaguely familiar with CAD, as I know some people who are interior designers. Is that what you're trying to do? Or am I totally off track?

  • never considered interior design--most positions for that want a degree in interior design. although i know in one of the classes i had, there would always be interior design students who would come in and use the computers to do their projects on AutoCAD.

what i did when I was laid off was structural and miscellaneous steel drafting. for a first job right i had while i was finishing school, it was very hard for me to learn the specifics of structural steel construction, learning software that is very specific to that industry (which i feel like i am behind the 8ball, because my experience isn't with AutoCAD or some other widely used drafting software), and then also getting a few hours of sleep a night because of a newborn, it was just not a good fit at the time.

i know some people in my class who went on to do some electrical and plumbing drafting, some who work just for builders...some who work at an architects office or architectural firm (one girl got an internship at OPN, had the highest GPA in our class...was working there after we got out of school and got laid off from OPN (i think after the flood) she couldn't find a job and ended up joining the Navy.

I gotcha. I'd heard of CAD and was hoping there may be a way I could help, but it doesn't sound like it now that you've explained further. The economy is definitely tough, and seems like that's especially true in your industry. Stay positive - I'm sure something will break for you soon in your area of interest!

yeah....i know things are starting to pick up cause I have been seeing job postings more frequently...I submit my resume even though they say they want more years of experience than what i have.

But, i have noticed that with a lot of jobs, that they always want someone with X amount of years of experience or a bachelors degree, even for jobs that any monkey can walk in off the street and be doing after a couple days of training. I am just wondering what would happen in a lot of these jobs if there is a massive population die off that wipes out most of the people with experience, leaving a population with minimal to no experience because nobody wanted to hire them to give them experience.

i remember a time when there once was this thing called On the Job Training.

Yep, always frustrating when everyone wants you to have a certain amount of experience, but there's no way to actually gain that experience. Hopefully one of these employers doesn't prioritize experience quite as much and gives you a chance. Then you'll have that experience, so you'll have many more options to choose from in the future.
