  • I'm pretty sure it was you that was always pimping crossfit, just have some questions, so if you or anyone that knows about it want to chime in, it would be appreciated. I know about what it is, but do you get the workouts and do them on your own, or do you do it a fitness club/gym? If it is at a fitness club/gym is it something that you have to pay extra for or part of the membership and all that jazz? Just looking to do something different, I have a lot of my own equipment, but it seems it would be better doing it with an actual coach or trainer.

  • I've never done it, but I've talked to several people who have done it at a gym a few times for instruction and then just did it on their own after that. I'm not sure about the gyms, but I see "crossfit" gyms popping up all over town, so they have gyms that are just for that.

Yeah I think there might be a crossfit gym in Omaha, I haven't really looked into anything yet though

  • I grabbed a torrent of all the PX90 videos a while back. I buttered up some popcorn one night and watched a little of them. Looked hard. I'm chubby.

  • i know the guy who runs the CrossFit gym in Cedar Rapids. the wife used to go there to workout on off days from roller derby practice.

the setup up here, from my understanding is that there is some equipment set up at his gym, but it basically is a circuit workout and each workout is a little bit different. sometimes they do stuff outside, sometimes they just do exercises utilizing just body weight.

i linked the prices. it looks like they just have the "unlimited" or a drop in on a day rate.
i think when he started, he used to have packages for certain times a week. he must have dropped those.

Prices | Cedar Rapids CrossFit Gym

If you take advantage of our memberships your price per class could be as little as $5 to $10 each! We design and scale each workout for you, teach and

Sorry for just now seeing this. There are two main sites that have literally hundreds of workouts posted (5 or 6 per week all the way back to the early 2000's), and you can access all of them for free. On crossfit.com, most of them even have video demonstrations. There is also reebokcrossfitone.com, although I don't think that site is quite as helpful.

The basic premise of crossfit is that it's constantly varied, so there are a lot of workouts that require no equipment, a lot that require some basic equipment, and a lot that require a lot of equipment. So based on which workout you're doing, that dictates where you can perform that day's workout. You may just need 10 square feet of empty space, or just a track, or just a jump rope, or just a swimming pool, or just a pull up bar, or just a dumbell, etc. But since there are so many workouts out there, you can pick and choose which ones you do based on what equipment you have available. For instance, some of them require a rope to climb, and I don't have access to that, so I don't do those workouts.

The way I got into it was one of my good friends was a trainer at a crossfit gym. I'd come in after the gym closed, and he'd have a workout that we would do. I was never a member, though, and only went there because it was convenient for us to meet there. We could have done most of the workouts at any gym. There are crossfit gyms all over the place - there's one in Cedar Rapids, one in Iowa City, etc. So some people are members at a crossfit gym, and they go in regularly and do the workouts there. So you can do that if that's your preference, but by no means do you have to join a crossfit gym in order to do crossfit.

A lot of other people are members at regular gyms, and you can still do the vast majority of crossfit workouts on your own at a regular gym.

Alternatively, you could get by without being a member at any gym, and just focusing on the workouts that require little to no equipment.

You're welcome. If you go to crossfit.com, they post a Workout of the Day (WOD) every day (keep in mind that every fourth day is a rest day). So you can see those workouts with video demonstrations on the front page. Also, on the top left of the front page, click on Exercises and Demos. From there, click on the three links "Miscellaneous WOD's and demos," "The girls/named WOD's" and "WOD demos." You'll see a ton of workouts under all three links. And if you're still looking for more, they have an archives link on the front page that goes back to the early 2000s. Knock yourself out, and keep us posted!

Excellent, I look forward to trying some, I would say some of the hardest workouts I have ever done and that includes sports and everything, would be the second month of Insanity. The problem with that is that it gets so boring doing them over and over all the time. I've heard from several people that these are ridiculous workouts, but are always different. Hopefully start it tomorrow or the next day.

  • I have a busy day with baseball practice tonight. I figure the easiest one I can fit into my schedule today will be 8 rounds of 400 meters followed by 90 seconds of rest. Haven't done actual running in a couple of months. Should be interesting.

Sorry for just now seeing this. That's a tough one - I actually did it the other day. It's a little different than most of the workouts though since it's just running, whereas the vast majority combine strength and cardio together.

Yeah, I want to more of the other ones, just didn't have the time to do those today, and I figured I could jump on the track before baseball practice tonight. I might do this one more often just in the morning as a complimentary workout.

    Gotcha. How'd it go?

And it's obviously up to you, but that could become pretty taxing on your body to do two of these workouts (this one plus another one) per day on a regular basis. Most of them are total body workouts that work your legs significantly, and they're hard enough to finish when you're completely fresh.

It was rough, and yeah if I were to do this as a complimentary workout, I would definitely take it down a notch, not do 8 of the 400s.

That makes sense. Just a word of advice based on what I've observed - some of the workouts won't look that tough when you see them on paper. But I've been doing this for several years, and every single one of them is extremely difficult. Some are a little harder than others, but they're all awful if you push yourself.

Also, do your best to record your times for each workout. It may not come up again for three months or so, and you want to know what time you're gunning for the second time around. That's when it gets fun, because if you're competitive, you'll do everything in your power to improve on the last time you did it.

Yeah I have had a few friends do them and tell me about how much they "hate them" but how awesome they are

  • the guy that owns crossfit in cedar rapids, before he opened crossfit, he just ran his martial arts place and him and another person also had a crossfit type of fitness class. When i was doing that class, there were days where we would do the "box of death". all the exercises that we have ever done would be written on paper and thrown in a box. then during class, we would pull one of the papers out of the box and do whatever exercise was written on it and continue pulling from the death box for the duration of the class.

  • on a side note, it is amazing what kind of workout you can get using things like resistance bands, weighted balls, yoga balls and utilizing your own body weight.

At the actual Crossfit Games, I think they only give the competitors about 30 minutes of advance notice before each event. Not sure if anyone saw in 2011, but they made swimming a part of the first event last year, and at least one of the competitors was completely unprepared for it and ended up dropping out. In a way, I'm not a big fan of that approach, but I can see why they do it. If they announce the event way ahead of time, that gives people more time to research any possible shortcuts or ways to "cheat." But I'm sure the current approach really raises the competitors' level of anxiety.
