The best division in the NFL

  • I hear a lot of national media types just casually say that the NFC East is the toughest division in the NFL, and they say it like it's common knowledge. IMO, that's not even close to accurate. The AFC North and NFC North are much better, and just about every other division (save for the NFC West) is at least at the same level as the NFC East, if not slightly better. The NFC East is by far the most-hyped division, but nowhere near the best division.

  • I'd say the NFC North is the best, but I'm biased .

  • NFC North had 3 teams that were .500 or better last year, and if Cutler hadn't gotten hurt the bears probably would have been above .500.

I'm biased, but the NFC North is the best currently. The AFC north is probably the best in the other conference.

  • NFC south is right there the only thing holding them back is the saints suspensions. Carolina will be tough, Atlanta has been consistent lately. And the Bucs look to be improved and can also push for the playoffs

    AFC North is better IMO

    Packers slightly better than Pittsburgh/Ravens
    Pittsburgh/Ravens better than Lions
    Cincinnati better than Bears
    Cleveland better than Vikings

  • IMHO, the AFC West is the best. Any team in that division could win 7 games this year. What other division can say that?

  • I disagree, a lot of other leagues have 1 or 2 teams way out in front of their division, but I think top-bottom the NFC East is tougher. I don't think it's by a wide margin but if you look at the schedules of NFC East teams they beat up on each other in division and in their out of division games they rarely lose by wide-margins (only 8 total losses of 10 or more points out of division) and regularly played the likes of the: San Fransisco Giants, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, etc. very tough and in a couple of cases beating them. Unfortunately we can't look at last years schedule for any head-head match-ups between NFC East and AFC North teams, but I think at the very least the 2 divisions have to be considered tied for the the best in football. If we're just talking about pure W-L records, obviously it isn't the case.

FWIW, I counted the out of conference W-L for the NFC East and they were a combined 18-22. San Fransisco (13-3) played all 4 NFC East teams going 3-1, scoring a TOTAL of 14 more points (just over 3 points per game or just over 4 points per win) more than the 4 NFC East teams.

You mean any of the teams in the AFC West could win the division with just 7 wins...

  • This changes year to year because there is so much parity in the NFL, but here's how I'd rank the divisions currently.

    AFC North
    NFC North
    NFC South
    AFC East
    AFC West
    NFC East
    NFC West
    AFC South

Now Todd, we all know and accept that you're a Bengals homer, but how do you justify ranking the NFC East that low?

Based on what? A glance at the overall record proves nothing, you'd think a Hawkeye fan would know that after say 2008.

lol I'm assuming this was a joke, because you know I'm a Browns fan...

But honestly, I think the NFC East is overrated top to bottom. The Giants won the Super Bowl. Not taking anything away from that amazing accomplishment, but they still struggled in the regular season against teams from other divisions. They could easily miss the playoffs in 2012, as they're by no means unbeatable. And two teams in the division were out of playoff contention before the final month of the season. IMO, Washington is typically the most obnoxiously-hyped team year in and year out. Every year, they're about to break through, but it never happens. They just haven't been a good organization in a long time. And Dallas had a decent team last year, but didn't make the playoffs.

Haha, yeah it was a joke, but I figured being a Browns fan was punishment enough. lol

I agree that NONE of the NFC East teams except maybe Washington, played up to expectations last year.

    - The Cowboys couldn't figure out who the hell they were as an offense, blame which I put squarely on Jason Garrett since it's not like it was his 1st year calling plays in Dallas, however I will admit it must be hard trying to build a great team working under Jerry Jones, with both lines considerably underperforming, and injuries to many top offensive weapons. Dallas also beat San Fransisco and barely lost to most of the non-division opponents which was the difference between them being 8-8 and being over 10+ wins.

    - The Eagles just imploded under all of their hype, and yet if my Cowboys could've beaten them 1 damn time, the Cowboys could've gotten into the playoffs. The Eagles are hyped once again to be a very good team, I still think they won't be nearly as good as their potential because as good as Michael Vick is, I'll believe he can stay healthy and consistent for a full season when I see it for myself.

    - The Giants seem like they play the best when their backs are up against the wall, I still refuse to give Eli Manning much credit because their defense is the true winner for that team, but they are very inconsistent when not forced to play better.

That's really not fair. The Eagles finished in the top ten in offense and defense. The Giants won The Super Bowl. The Cowboys are awesome of course. And Washington now has RG3.

Seriously I expect The Eagles to put it all together this year. They are going to be good. They won't have the problems like they did last year.

And how many wins did that get for the Eagles? Haven't Eagles fans been saying "next year" for 10 years now?

Really, I just get tired of hearing about how great the NFC east is from outlets like SC and such. Pretty much the only reason why I get involved in these arguments.

So what exactly is the justification for the NFC East being crap, other than the Eagles? You're not adding anything to the argument but saying it's crap and not providing any reasoning or answering the OP's question of what division IS best.
