Soda vs Pop

I always thought it had something to do with Coca Cola being in Atlanta? shrug

Perhaps, but what about those fine Pepsi products, including every redneck's favorite-Mountain Dew?

My old Pappy called his brew White Lightning instead of Mountain Dew

Pop all the way. Usually only southern people call it soda, my cousins who have lived in Texas most of their lives are a little more northern in the sense that they don't have an accent and they think it's wierd that all their friends just say "Coke," but I think they do say soda.

I think people on the East and West coasts also say soda. I've traveled a lot, and it seems like everywhere I go, it's soda. Glad people in Iowa typically say pop.

I want to know how "coke" even became generally accepted as the term for pop in the south. Were people too lazy to learn the names of the pop? Why would anyone call a clear lemon-lime pop "coke". It makes no sense.

Completely agree with you. Doesn't make any sense at all.

  • I was in Florida and asked for a coke to drink and was asked what kind. I was very confused because young and didnt understand the whole concept of having different words for same thing. doesn't help that floridians have one heck of an accent to understand.

Use to when I was a kid. That was when a coke in a vending machine was a bottle not cans.
I hate cans and plastic. 95% of my beer is bottle.cheers

Most places down south only serve Coke products, I went down to San Antonio a few years ago to visit my cousins and I had trouble finding Pepsi or Mt. Dew, granted we didn't stop at gas stations daily or anything.

  • I generally call it pop.
The exception being fruit flavored drinks such as Sunkist Orange or Welches Strawberry. Not sure why but I've always referred to those as soda.
