Pet Peeve Of Mine

  • A big pet peeve of mine is when people complain about meteorologists. It seems like every snowstorm we get, people start hating on them for not knowing what they're talking about, because they're not exact on the snowfall total. I've also seen many people talking about "If I had a job that I could be right less than 50% of the time, I'd love it." Do people not realize weather dudes are right practically over 80% of the time on a day by day basis? They only realize they're wrong when we don't get as much snow as their weather models predicted. Weather is possibly the hardest thing on earth to predict, when it comes to exact locations. With winter storms, the smallest change in the jet stream, or in the low pressure system, can make a difference between 2 inches, and 8 inches of snow. People seem to think that weather is an exact science, and in reality it's more of an estimation. I saw someone tonight on fbook, complaining about kcrg, saying they over-hyped this winterstorm. Well on Tuesday they posted an update on their site, saying they couldn't predict how much snow we'd get and they didn't want to put out snow totals, because it could easily change. But some people seem to overlook that, just so they can bitch about it/End of rant

  • I agree, but I've basically quit listening to people all together because the majority of them complain about everything.

  • I took "Elements of Weather" for gen ed as an undergraduate (much harder than it sounds). Part of the class was that we had to give a weather report one day, using the maps from the NWS and predicting the weather based on the information we were learning. Virtually none of our predictions were right all semester. It is way harder than you might think.

  • Free world I can complain about anything I want for one, for 2 I just think it is funny how they blow it up saying 20 then every 3 hours they change it, why not just say we have a storm coming in, prepare for a chance of a severe storm as we do not know exactly much snow it will bring? Oh wait that makes too much sense to say something like that. They could avoid anyone giving them crap about it if they would just say that

I'm guessing they'd rather have good ratings and a decent salary more than people saying they can't do their job. People are obsessed with weather. You being a prime example the past week.

I'd rather them hype it up to something bigger than what it turns out to be, than vice versa. Back when I lived in IC, we got a snowstorm on SuperBowl Sunday. I was heading to work at like 4 in the afternoon, and it had been snowing for awhile. We were only suppose to get around 3 inches. Well when I went to work, we easily had 6 already. I made it about a block to Morman Trek, and witness 3 accidents happen. People were stuck all over, few snow plows were out, and when you rolled down your car window all you could hear were sirens in every direction. It was chaos basically. There was even a Semi on Morman Trek that lost control and jackknifed and took up all 4 lanes of the road. We ended up getting 10 inches I think, when they called for 3. I would much rather them tell me we're going to get 10 inches, and then get 3. However, it gave me a great excuse to turn around, head home, drink and watchin the Super Bowl. Oh, and from that same storm, CR ended up getting like 1.5 or 2 inches. Once again just showing how hard it is to predict those things.

But if every storm is hyped up to be bigger than it is, or an extreme storm, how long before people roll their eyes and say "whatever"

That's assuming they're always wrong. As long as they're right some of the time, I don't think thatll ever happen.

then cut out the middleman and just assume every storm is going to be worse than it is.
