NFL and safety is a big thing now/Toughest Sport

  • How about this? How does it compare to this? Anyone know if they have had safety issues? Is this the toughest sport?

  • Not to take anything away from those guys, but I still don't think anything compares to the NFL or even college football. The guys playing in the NFL and in college are so much bigger, stronger and faster than anyone playing rugby, and the collisions are much more frequent and intense.

  • I've hung out with rugby teams before. They're basically Marines with a ball and a field. It's a prerequisite to be certifiably insane
before you step on that field.

Yeah, but would they be willing to take those hits without pads?

Haha. I've never seen that. You can be sure we would've tried that in the neighborhood as kids had we known about it.

    Silly Japanese people.

Well the collisions wouldn't be anywhere near as fierce if they were against the rugby players, rather than fellow NFL players, so I bet they would. I'm not at all saying rugby players aren't tough, but I do think the NFL/college football are a different world from rugby.

Probably worth pointing out that there are restrictions on the types of tackles that are legal in rugby for player safety reasons. So you won't have the frequency of intense collisions that there are in football - for the most part.

My little brother plays rugby and I'd wager that he can hold his own in the size and strength department with just about anyone. Speed is a different story obviously.

Sevens is pretty exciting while "regular" rugby sometimes gets a little too bogged down for my taste. I'd still probably prefer to watch American football, but I do enjoy both.
