Michael Vick a dog owner again

  • PHILADELPHIA -- Michael Vick is a dog owner again.

Vick, who served 18 months in federal prison on dogfighting charges, confirmed Thursday that his family has a dog. The Philadelphia Eagles' four-time Pro Bowl quarterback refused to discuss the topic just a day earlier.

"I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family's decision to care for a pet," Vick said in a statement. "As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God's creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family."

Since his release from prison in 2009, Vick has worked with The Humane Society of the United States to speak out against animal cruelty. He's made appearances at schools and spoken to students about the dangers of being involved in dogfighting. Vick says that commitment will continue.

"This is an opportunity to break the cycle," Vick said. "To that end, I will continue to honor my commitment to animal welfare and be an instrument of positive change."

The Humane Society declined to comment.

Vick was banned from owning a dog until completing his probation period. When he first stated his desire to own one, it touched off a firestorm. Some animal-rights activists were outraged along with fans who thought the star player should never be allowed to have a dog.

"I'm not a psychopath. I'm not crazy. I'm a human being," Vick once told The Associated Press about wanting to own a dog. "What happened in my past and what I did in the culture I grew up in doesn't shape and mold me as the person I am now."

Why should any dog have to be his second chance?

Why do murderers get a 2nd chance at life? Why do drunk drivers get their license back? A dog should be no different. If he messes up again I will change my mind

I see it more like getting your kids taken away for abuse and in a few years having some more kids. I hate that people do that too.

  • I am so staunchly against that censored, that I can't put it into words. If you don't know, my wife is a veterinarian and we own a small animal practice. The care and well-being of animals is our life and I do not put what Vick did in the same category as most crimes. To me, it is a total lack of humanity along the lines of a pedophile, other sex offenders, child abusers, etc. His was not a "mistake," it was failing of his character down to his core.

With that being said, I have mixed feelings on this article. In a vacuum, I think the only way Vick should be allowed to be near any dog is if that dog is starving and Vick is chained up and smeared with peanut butter. On the other hand, I feel every child should be able to experience the bond with an animal and his children should not suffer in that regard just because their father is a worthless piece of censored,

Here is a link to an award-winning documentary put together by the owner of the studio where I got a lot of my ink done.

  • Killing someone or driving drunk and killing someone isn't a mistake either. Treating dogs the way he did was one of the worst things you can do. But IMO making the decision to drive drunk is right up there as well. All I am saying is he deserves a second chance. What if he treats this dog the way it deserves to be treated and loves it unconditionally?

Do you think murderers deserve a second chance? I don't know many people who do, so I don't get why you keep comparing it.

Personally I don't think they do. But society gives them one. Vick is no different. Don't agree with it, but it is what it is

  • The difference for me, personally, is that I can envision a situation (actually, several) where I could conceivable kill somebody. I could conceive of being so down and out that I did some money-related crime to survive. There is no way in hell that I would ever even watch a dogfight, let alone be involved in it and commit the atrocities he did (torture, kill, brutalize).

Society may say that he gets a second chance, but to me he will always be a sociopathic piece of censored.

lol I do that all the time. I thought it was nice so people didn't have to click on the link if they didn't want to. I always include a link also so I don't know what the problem is?shrug Is this another scrolling issue? There seems to be a lot of that on 247. I did notice fuisu said something similar so maybe I should start a thread and get more feedback. I thought people liked it but if they don't I won't do it anymore. Thanks for the feedback Creamer.

  • Very good point Scarlet. Although his crime was heinous, his time has been served. Would I llet MV adopt a puppy from the latest litter, probably not! I think he should have the number of the SPCA on speed dial. Let's get back to football, Basketball, wrestling, and general Bullsh**.

I guess to me it would be like allowing Jerry Sandusky a chance to run a daycare. Yes Vick paid his debt to society, but his second chance is his freedom and the chance to play football. He should not be allowed to have an animal, regardless of the circumstances.
