How stressful is your job?

  • Interesting research here.........

    http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2013/01/04/least-stressful-job-careercast-professor/

LOL........your tax dollars at work uh-huh

    Skyhawk52

  • Do tax dollars go to private colleges? Methinks not. Do students at public schools not pay tuition? Dumb argument is dumb.

To me, it seems fair that someone who spends that much time in school should have certain perks to their job.

But I must say, based on all the professors I worked with, none of them were carefree. It's actually quite stressful writing grants trying to keep your lab open for another year or 2.

  • Dumb in dumb?

So, what you're saying is Jwolf's random observations are much better than the
    study I linked, here??

    Gimmmeee a break, man.

Either that, or you're a professor, who this 'hit' a bit too close to home?

    Skyhawk52

  • Mine isn't stressful. Right now I'm making paper hearts listening to kids snore.

Did you look at the parameters they used? This "study" is about as useful as preseason football rankings. It makes for good internet banter, but offers zero substance.

And I am not a professor, and never have been. I have worked closely with some for several years.

Why did you put parenthesis around hit? Why do you dislike professors? Or are they part of some evil higher education conspiracy?

What do you do? Do you make decent money? Are you hiring?

  • Also, my aunt is a hair stylist in a small town and is co-owner of a hair salon. She rakes working 3 days a week. Did you know a woman usually will pay between 30 and $90 everytime she goes and gets her hair down. 90 bucks an HOUR!!!!! If you don't have to pay the house, there is a ton of money to be made doing that.

Say you work 10 hour days for 3 days a week. Average $50 an hour (some are just 15-$20 haircuts, others are 70-90 color/cuts) that is $500 bones a day. 1500/wk...after taxes...netting around 1000-$1200 a week for 30 hours of work. 4k a month $4500 a month take home. They own the building, so we'll say 500 a month in rent plau another few hundred in utilities...plus other expenses....say she brings home 3k to 3k for basically working two weeks a year or 6 months out of the year.. Brings HOME around 40 grand workings half the year in about the least stressful job you can have. I'd take it. Plus she makes money off the other two girls who rent a chair from them. Cake.

I agree WHOLEHEARTEDLY, 100% with the findings that this study presented.

College professor is a KUSHy job.

  • My job has days where there is very little if any stress, but that can change and go from 0 to a 10 in a matter of seconds. There is also times of prolonged high stress during my busy times. But all in all it's pretty much what I signed up for, so I am used to it. I try not to make value judgements on other peoples jobs, because you never really know until you're in their shoes.
My guess though would be that if anybody had it easy it would be med students in Des Moines. lol

  • I am a professor, and sure, being a professor has its perks (low health risk, decent pay (for some), and growth opportunities (this is what the article used as its criteria). But it is hardly a stress-free position...Last semester, I went to work at 7 came home most nights between 6 and 7. I advise students, plus have expectations of to serve the university and local community and produce as a scholar. And while more more people are going to college, there are more and more universities relying upon adjuncts to teach students as a cost saving measure. Recent PhD's who do not land one of the coveted positions, try to scrape by teaching multiple classes, without health care or any long term commitment from the school.

I do commercial lending at a community bank here in Houston. I make enough. If you lived in Houston, maybe.

I rarely work 40 hours a week... usually around 35 or so. During the holidays it was more like 30 or so. I make enough to afford whatever I want to do, within reason.

That is why its a 3 out of 10. No matter how busy it is, theres always time for an hour and a half lunch and the ability to arrive 20 minutes late every morning. I was asked a few weeks ago (right before Christmas) if I would be interested in moving banks. I immediately laughed and said "Uh... no.".

I'm not sure the why you used a reference to weed, as it doesn't pertain to this topic at all.

    Troof.

Actually, almost every day anymore I long for the days where I worked full time doing lab work. Come in around 8:30, go home usually before 5 (depended on what i had going). Occasionally I'd have to stop in for about 20 minutes on a weekend. I could just relax at night.

Now I pretty much study all night, except when I'm screwing around on here with you fellers.

  • Depends on what kind of professor your talking about, I'm sure the advance post grad lab professor is busting his butt to get grants for the school but eventually he's hoping to be that professor with tenure who drinks beer with students & plays hockey as a hobby. The only stress a tenure guy has is not banging some students.

Weed? What are you talkin about my man?

    Splain for us?

    Professor's schedule:

School starts.....Sept 1, then Fall break for a week in October, then a month -or so--- off for 'holiday break'......then, it's maybe 2 months til Spring break and I'm off for 5 months of summer.

It's a great SCAM if you can get it.

Do you have any idea what most professors do?

I know most the history ones at Iowa were busy writing grants so that they could go study somewhere, so that they could write some more stuff to get published...yep sounds like a cake walk...

Oh and one of mine left at the end of a semester with all our papers to still grade and he was on his way to Central or South America somewhere to do some research...sounds super relaxing.

    Are you freaking serious?

You're not even worth the time. Do some research. Google can be your friend.
