Help me to understand.........

  • Well, I am going to disagree with the majority and yes, I am a gamer. I am a big fan of the Call of Duty series. But, at least half of the kids who talk nonstop during the online gaming (until I can get them muted) are clearly prepubescent and they are running around measuring success in kills of other people. It cannot help by desensitize kids of that age and I really don't want to hear about the ratings because too many parents don't care. Given that......

My ex-wife's son was one of the gaming generation and I have never known a child with more violent ideation. He was not violent in life - fights, etc. - but he would constantly talk about blowing things up and killing them. If he had been a little more unbalanced, the issue could have arisen. BTW, he is an adult now and perfectly fine.

I am just saying that it can be a contributing factor, in my humble, nowhere near professional opinion.

    Really?

When you look at the number of people that play those types of video games compared to the number of people that commit those dumb acts. Those numbers aren't even close.

But if you want to blame music, tv, movies, video games, more power to you.

Eminem rapped about this a long time ago and it is still true

And all of this controversy circles me....Where were the parents at? And look where it's at

That last line, where were the parents at?

Good song, and its pretty much true. I, and most of my friends play a lot of violent video games and have since we were about the age that meets the rating on the games. It all comes down to parent hood. No game out there (that I've played anyways) tells you to go shoot up a school and to take your anger out on others by just killing them. Yeah, GTA has a lot of killing people in it, so does Call of Duty, etc. They don't cause people to kill people. Being insane causes people to kill people.

  • I am not a gamer at all. I have played games like COD, but I never really got into it. My kids both like them and my youngest is definitely a gamer. He would sit in front of the X box 24-7 if I allowed it, but I don't. It's called parental responsibility. I want my kids to learn their values from me, and not some video game. The problem with trying to prevent this horrific nightmare from happening again is, that you can't legislate morality. You can't ban video games, or guns, or a certain type of music, or sensationalized media coverage, because .001 of 1% of the population goes nuts and kills innocents. Just like drunk driving that has killed thousands of people because of irresponsible and negligent a-holes, your not going to ban cars or repeal the 21st amendment. It all sucks I know, and I don't have the answers, I just know what the answer isn't.

  • We would be better off spending money to try and identify the 'defective gene' and make it mandatory testing before age 5.

If not for video games, then it would just be something else.

Crazy people are crazy, that's why they do this kind of stuff, not because they liked have a high K/D ratio.

Well I really don't know Call of Duty that well. But I'm guessing it's rated MA for Mature audiences. Parents shouldn't be letting kids play that game. Parents own a role in all of this as well. Don't just put it on video games or music. That's too easy.

  • FTR, I do not blame videogames per se. Clearly, there are millions (including me) that play them and are not out shooting up schools. I just can't rationally say they have no affect on the culture of violence in this country. And I have NEVER blamed music. I find a huge difference between hearing about something and actually role-playing the part of killing for hours each day. In one scene in Call of Duty MW2, you are undercover with some Russian bad guys who are trying to set up the US for an atrocity and you walk through an airport slaughtering all the people there with a light machine gun as they scream and run for cover.

With that being said, I think I will go play a little Black Ops II.

biggrin I don't blame video games for one second, as I said in an earlier post the most notorious killers in the history of the world had no video games, I seriously believe you are either born a killer mentally or your parents abuse you to become one, or maybe are bullied to the point of insanity. Video games may perfect your insanity but they don't cause it. I have never seen some one stomp on turtles, collecting coins going into the sewer systems to rescue a princess in the news in my life.

  • Probably some weirdos can be effected by video games just the same way some men can get porn brain and have blamed rapes on that. But I really think something else must already be wrong with a person if they lose their perception with reality. Like Morrison said I have never seen a game about shooting innocent six year olds.

Oh probably not but I'm just saying I've heard that excuse before too. Weirdos are weirdos but they always want to blame it on somebody or something.

No, but next time I rape someone I'll use it as a scapegoat excuse.

Probably blame Manson, drugs and video games as well.
