Ghosts

  • What are your feelings on this? Personally I don't believe in anything like this, ghosts or spirits or anything. I think in situations where people think things are haunted, they work their mind into believing it and ultimately that leads to them working into seeing or hearing things.

The reason I ask is because I was talking with my mom tonight and she told me about nephew who is 5 having an experience. He sees things in his room, and has had dreams seeing the same things. Well I guess the other night he came out of his room and asked my older brother who the old sitting on the couch was. There was obviously no one there, but he explained to my older brother exactly what this guy looked like was convinced he was sitting there. I guess this is kind of weird for a 5 year old to give the detail he did, but I still think it has to do with working the mind into that frenzy.

What do you guys think? Or have any similar stories?

  • `Weird. I opened your thread twice on my phone and both times it took me to spam sites. Only time that's ever happened is on a thread about ghosts.

I don't really believe in it, but I love hearing stories in threads like these. There are some pretty convincing and freaky stories out there. Problem is, I don't know anyone personally who it has happened to, so I don't know what to believe.

I believe things might have happened, but like I said, I think there is always an explanation for it. The thing with my nephew is just weird how he described so vividly the guy sitting there on the couch, and it's not the first time he has seen things

I always just chalk it up to how little of our brain we actually use and how random spurts of access to different parts of it can cause some weird stuff to happen. I also have kind of a wild imagination, so the stuff still freaks me out a little.

  • I do not. But I'm also of the agnostic/atheist variety.

Kind of my reasoning too, I do however like watching the stories about things. I think they are interesting, same with hearing my nephew's story. Like I said I always say there is a reason for hearing or seeing things.

The brain is a fascinating organ that we've just began to discover the intricacies of how it works.

Right, and all the things I teach about mental illnesses, it's crazy to think what is able to happen in the brain

  • I believe in ghosts i guess. Not really that big of a story but a few years ago when my grandpa had to stay in the hospital for a couple nights on the second or third night i was down at his house and i swear that i saw him walk past the doorway into the kitchen from the living room. Of course had to have just been my imagination.

I have had certain things like that happen to me too, but not to deadhorse I figure there is a reason for it

Do you teach psych or biology? We start neuroanatomy this week. Perhaps I'll know more in a few months. And hopefully the stuff I learned in undergrad comes back easily.

psychology, I'm social studies, so that is one of the classes I have. Some schools actually will have a psych teacher, but many put it with social sciences

  • Our psych class was separate and I think if you took it as a junior they would pay for you to take the college psych through WITCC during your senior year. I never took it, but I think there were a few sections of it. Not sure what else he taught.

But psych was my minor at Iowa. I really liked behavioral, clinical, and cognitive psych.

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

I believe ours was separate too, our teacher also taught sociology, and taught college level psych and sociology which we could get credits through IWCC, I took all those with her.

I loved psych. I always wanted to be a child psychologist, but school wasn't my thing and that takes a lot of school.

That would be a very challenging field for me. Especially knowing a lot of the reason the child is seeing me is because of how adults treated them.

I enjoy psych, but I also know I don't want to go into psychiatry. I just don't think I'd enjoy it day in and out.

  • I don't really believe in ghosts but sometimes I 'm not fully convinced that I don't and I can get pretty scared. When I first moved into the house I live in now it used to sound like someone was walking my basement stairs all night. Apparently it was just the water heater because it broke and once we got a new one the noise stopped. For a week I was not really sleeping and wanted a new house.
