Received notice that a honkytonk western band whose lead singer is an old friend of mine from Keokuk, will be playing at Gabes on June 21st. Might just make a trip up to see them. They are also playing in Keokuk and at a couple of places in Chicago. They are based out of San Francisco and only come to the midwest every couple of years. They are very entertaining. Anyway, is Gabes strictly a bar, bar/restaurant, what?

This one in Iowa City I assume.
Gabe's Oasis used to be a live music venue (no food, IIRC). Kind of a dive, really. Then it changed names 5 or 6 years ago, then someone else bought it and changed the name back to Gabe's as a shout out to the original.
Nice place, looks a lot nicer than it used to. Good place to see a show.
Maybe they're playing at Olesani's place...
Thanks folks. My buddies band is called "Red Meat" and they have several CD's out. Lot of fun to listen to. Most of their songs are of their own creation. Can't wait for them to swing through here.
Nice, any links to some tunes of theirs?
Well Twib, it is your bad luck to be conversing with a computer illiterate and I have no idea about links. I have managed to post a photo once but have never been able to do it again. The CD I have is entitled "We Never Close" and my buddy (Dave "Smelly" Kelly) is the one with the cig in his mouth on the cover. I especially like "Honky Tonk Habit", "Go On Home, Mr Johnson" and "High Maintenance Babe". If I knew how to link, I would, but I don't, so I won't.
Since I am a prodoct of the 50's, 60's and 70's musicly, I rarely listen to western/honkytonk/country music at all but these guys have a real comical/talented bent. I know they have a web site. Enjoy Twib.
not too bad, a live show would be a decent time.
From the album We Never Close 2007
Gabes is one of my favorite venues in the "corridor" to enjoy a show. Easy access to parking, and it's not too far from the pedophile mall.

Well, I'm definitely looking forward to it and have every intention of occupying a seat at Gabes for that event. Hope I see some of you there.
