The one that yanked my chain this year was Columbus day. I happened to lose/misplace my drivers license and needed to go to the closest State DOT office to replace it. That was 70 miles one way. Well, it was closed due to the "holiday". I was annoyed.
Did you know that you can't get a room at a lot of motels without a picture ID? I was suprised at how many, even if you pay cash. Anyway that is a holiday I would rather see renamed and moved to the middle of summer when everybody wants more time off.
Before there was space or time there was rock and roll.
Maybe we ought to keep Columbus day when it is but add another Columbus day for when his ships first set sail which was early August, so maybe the first Monday of each August we could have Columbus Day Part 1
I would be cool with columbus day
I'd be good with that. But.... what if we took it a step farther and had 3? One for the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria? Would it be possible to have a floating holiday with one of those? Lame joke there.
Who besides gov people get Columbus day off? Banks maybe?
To answer that question, I really don't know who gets them off, but I enjoyed the joke.
Completely get rid of Valentine's Day. It's fake and complete nonsense.
I'd like to see another holiday in April or May.
I don't know but we need an official Fish's vothot day.
Valentine's day. You don't get a day off from work and usually spend a bunch of money. Horrible.
Second choice would be to get rid of Colombus Day. I don't get it off and he didn't discover America. Sham holiday.
He might not have technically discovered it or been the first to do so, but it was definitely the beginning of European exploration to this area
I'd probably give that to Amerigo Vespucci too. He ran into the "Americas" which triggered further exploration to "The New World". Lief Erickson ran into the Americas before all of them though with his Viking ship.
I will say that Columbus was the first that really prompted European settlement. Technically, Columbus found the West Indies.
MLK day cause the uproar it would cause
Valentine's Day is one of my favorites, it takes up two weeks of curriculum at work and heart sugar cookies with pink fronting are delicious. The only holiday I would change would be Halloween would be in August and always on a Saturday.
May 5th, keep the drinking if you want but damn get rid of the Mexican flag and all the other bs nonsense. I don't give a damn about the Mexicano's independence.
Has nothing to do with Mexican independence really. Most Mexicans in Mexico do not celebrate it. May 5th marks the victory at the Battle of Puebla. So really the only place in Mexico that celebrates that day is in Puebla. Most Mexicans in America that celebrate it couldn't tell you that.
I agree with that one Misty. Even though it would change the Hawkeye blackout games, it really is more of a kids "holiday", although I have been to some hootin Halloween parties for adults. Downtown Madison, Wi comes to mind among others.
Seems like it is always either raining or snowing here and dark too soon. It can be a bit dangerous with the little witches and goblins out in the dark. And finally, it is more often than not during the week which is a pain.
Valentines day. Absolutely hate it.
"I was brought in here to change the culture. I'm going to coach with passion" - Fran McCaffery.
I hate the crass commercialism of it too. Although if you navigate the maze just right, every now and then you might get some sweet.........
