I was reading an article on this topic on Hawk Mania, via one of the Quad city papers. They made some points about bad manners going south of bad manners.
I used to think that you could be rivals and disagree but refrain from being really obnoxious. Maybe times have changed since I was a student.
I don't think calling cheerleaders cows, sluts, or gay when they are within hearing range or not is appropriate. Am I wrong? Nah. I'm right. I can talk s*** with the best of them but there are lines I won't cross.
Enough about me. What do you think?
Before there was space or time there was rock and roll.
I agree. I'm not much for name calling though ever.
I have been to every stadium in the B1G except PSU and the new MN stadium and it is the same way every where you go. I do agree with Weisman, the later the game and the more drinking the worse it is.
Its all dumb and the older you get the more obvious it is. ISU fan says we suck, I say they suck. They say iowa players are criminals, I say Albert Gary. It took me a couple yrs to realize to save your energy for creeping on girls.
Best/Worst Ive seen was 2004ish when ASU came to IC for a late game, maybe like 5pm. Team bus drove by the Fieldhouse and the whole tailgate started throwing beer cans at the bus. It was pathetic. The fieldhouse outdoor parking lot was shut down for good after that. Iowa tailgating died imo when they shut down that lot. It had a 100' beerbong on game days.
I don't like trash talking. If I sit here and say your team sucks, and my team beats you, who have we beaten? A team that sucks right? And God forbid if we lose then we have lost to a team that sucks, which is even worse. Some good natured ribbing is always in order and never goes out of style, but trash talking is born of people with inferiority complexes who have to talk trash to make themselves feel better. I would just as soon shake hands and say, "good game". Congratulate them on their win, or on a valiant effort in defeat. Don't get me wrong, I still go insane when my Hawkeyes lose, but I also frequently go over to our opponents boards and congratulate them on the victory. It's just the way I was raised.
This brings up to me the "Over Rated" chant which I can not stand aren't you putting yourself down for beating a team you are calling over rated?
Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.
As an old guy, I can assure you that is getting worse and worse. And the emphasis on drinking at all sporting events only makes it that much worse. The worst I have ever encountered personally are Bears fans at Soldier Field during a Bears-Packers game. I took some abuse, but there were drunken "fans" throwing beer at people with Packers garb on. When I went to work on Monday, I found out that the targets included a co-worker's two young children (like 8 and 10). No excuse for that at all, but what do we expect with the culture that has developed around these events. One idiot called my mother a drunken whore and I had to stop my Bears fan buddy from attacking him. Yeah, a whole of fun that day.
Life is hard. It's really hard if you're stupid.
NFL fans are some of the WOAT.
Night and day from what you see at college events. I've gone out of my way to put fellow Iowa "fans" in their place if I see them being asses toward opposing fans for no other reason than to be jerks. I just don't put up with that crap.
Signature goes here
Was at a viking/bear game about a dozen or so years ago...saw some vikings fans throw crap at a family in bears attire.
Went to a falcons bears game up in Chicago. Was a Sunday night game, got there at noonish. It was pretty cold (wind chills around -20 during game). I was treated well before the game...was offered food/drink. After the game and a bears win, I had a few runins...some guy walking by me decided to shout directly in my ear....otherwise there was a guy or two trying to be a tough guy.
My rule of thumb is that I give much respect for somebody to come and see their team play in the opposing teams home...many times, they travel a great distance, spend their money and are just trying to have a good time.
I agree. That one never made sense to me.
