Here's how I figured it out.

basically the idea is you add the 4 digits together to get the answer. However, the key is each number actually represents a different number.

1111=0 2222=0 3333=0 5555=0 7777=0

So, based on this you know that the digits 1,2,3,5, and 7 are worth 0.

0000=4 6666=4 9999=4

So, based on this you know that the digits 0,6, and 9 are worth 1.

To check this, you can look at 7662=2 (0+1+1+0) or 1012=1 (0+1+0+0).

However, this means you still need to figure out what 8 is worth. Go to the first one. 8809=6. (X+X+1+1)=6, so X=2.

Go ahead and look though all the numbers and replaced all the 0,6, and 9s with 1; all the 8s with 2; and all the other digits with 0 and add them up.

So the answer for 2581 is 2. (0+0+2+0)
