Bob Costas Halftime Rant

  • Thought it was pretty tacky of Costas and NBC to throw out a 2nd amendment arguement during halftime of the game tonight. Heres the quote if you missed it.
    .........................................................................................
"Well you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports cliches was heard yet again: "Something like this really puts it all in perspective."

Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf life. Since we will inevitably learn about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games.

Please. Those that need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportions about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City based writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well, that we may as well just quote, or paraphrase, from the end of his article:

"Our current gun culture," Whitlock wrote, "ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead… Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it."

In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. "Who knows? But here," wrote Jason Whitlock, "is what I believe: if Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Costas is a moron. If Belcher wanted to off himself and his girl, he would have found a way to do it.

But like Mike and Mike said this morning, he was using his 1st amendment right in doing so

  • Costas and Whitlock both should stick to sports and not politicize a tragedy. Especially one that is so fresh. Yes they both have the right to do so, but it was tacky none the less.

IMO, the tacky thing is all the coverage it is getting. This guy was a criminal, yet they keep mentioning him and how tragic his death was. I think the tragic thing was the death of his GF, but it seems like a lot of the people yesterday ignored that part when talking about him

  • Shut up, Bob. And, FTR, the First Amendment deals with the government's restraint of political speech, not some self-important asshat spouting his crap during a sporting event. Bob Costas is one of many people who, if you could buy them for what they're worth and sell them for what they think they're worth, it would be better than a Powerball win.

That's your opinion, like he is entitled to his, people get too sensitive if someone else gives their opinion. It is America, and people are allowed to give opinions. And he was actually paraphrasing another writer.

Both he and Whitlock were using the bully pulpit of the media to politicize a tragedy. It would have been more appropriate to just offer condolances to everyone who had been affected by the senselessness of the act. But they didn't, and rather than taking the high road they chose to attempt to advance a political agenda in bad taste. Do they have the freedom to do that? Absolutely. Was it in good taste? IMO it was not. I have the freedom to fart in an elevator full of people...but that doesn't mean that I should.

That's fine, and I am not trying to argue about it, but it happens. Like I have already said, the thing that pissed me off about the whole situation, is the amount of attention that was given to the killer, and the fact that they kept talking about the tragedy of him dying, not focusing on the fact that he was a murderer.

Cowherd had a good point on this today...everybody says that Costas should stick to what they do, and yet feel that they, themselves can have an opinion on everything, Everybody uses whatever public platform they have available to them to voice their opinion, whether it is twitter, facebook, messageboards, etc. just so happens Bob Costas has a public platform of television

the only opinion that should matter on this subject on whether or not Costas should have gone on his rant is his employer. if they feel it was harmful to their company, especially with sponsors then action will be taken.

with that said, even if we had strict gun control laws...if someone wants to get a hold of a gun, especially to commit a crime they are going to do it....if they cannot, and he really wanted her dead he would've stabbed her or something and would've offed himself another way.

yep...the guy killed his girlfriend and himself and left his child without parents. Unless the girl was crazy and his life was in immediate danger, their is way to much focus on the young, professional athlete in this situation

  • I've enjoyed Bob Costas for years. I am a fan of his sportscasts and was a fan of his late night talk show when it aired. I think that an op-ed piece on the nightly news would have been a better venue for him to make his remarks, not a half time sports cast. People watch football for the entertainment value. People watch the news to become informed. And I also agree with CB in that we should not be weeping for the loss of the players life, but rather the loss of the girl's life. It's a sad situation all the way around, and (IMO) it was too soon and too fresh to be taking this tragedy and turning it into a political statement.
I don't think Costas should be fired, or even reprimanded. I just think that his employer should remind him that he is a sports caster, not a political comentator, and that if that is what he wants to do, he should apply for the job at NBC Nightly News.

  • I really have no problem with Costas' opinion. Although Im an avid hunter I struggle with this issue also. All I saying is why voice it at halftime of the SNF game? He is a very powerful man in broadcasting. If he wanted to voice his opinion any newspaper/website in the country would allow him to do that. SNF is bigger than Bob Costas. Many non-football fans still watch SNF.

As I stated I thought it was tacky. I've always been a Costas fan but Im drawing the line here. At the end of the day he, and NBC got exactly what they wanted: more exposure. Its pretty sad that they use the deaths of 2 people to expand their agenda/network. Im always surprised that Notre Dame connects themselves with a network with such different views. $.

is this the first time an opinion regarding a tragedy that involved one of the leagues players was made at a halftime of a nationally televised primetime game, regardless of league?

Oh idk. Its the first time since Ive been watching primetime football that a talking head brought up changing the constitution.

This is getting borderline political so I pry shouldnt have started this thread.

    So wouldja?

But Bob gets to watch and commentate?

I would insist on Bob being there. I love him as a commentator and story teller. He could tell me stories about Olympians while instructing me how to bang his wife.

  • And I can call him a censored self-important POS because that is MY strongly-held opinion. Costas has always been somebody who thought he was above the rest of us.

Edit: FTR, I thought he was an above-average baseball play-by-play guy when that is all he did. The rest of his crap I can do without and I was very happy this year that I had DirecTV so I could always find an Olympic channel with an actual sporting event instead of his drivel.

It's hilarious, he is using is 1st amendment right to try to take away other people's 2 amendment right. It's ironic.

Without going political ill say, if he didn't have a gun she would've been stabbed to death. People still get murder in country's that don't have these laws

I don't want to hear Bobby talk about his political stance on gun rights on SNF. I don't care if he's pro gun or anti gun. I watch him to talk about football. If I wanted to watch him talk about gun rights he can go on CNN, MSN, or Fox.

I quit listening after he was talking about loud music. Dude is old and out of touch, music was made to be listen to at high volumes.

    Hawkifish..........I hear ya, man.

However, how can my comments get removed when others here are clearly talkin
    Pol, as well?......oh, whatever.

By the way------I'm a LIFELONG chiefs fan. Been to probably a dozen games at Arrowhead.
I'm just happy they won their 2nd game of the year. Most of these players have been working
very hard, most of the season. Good to see them get in the
    W column, once again.
And Fish.......since you chose to single me out..........for the record, I think it's a bit weird that
you allow Porn discussion, ad nauseum, but any hint of a certain, well ..........yeah, just whatever.
Politics is a very, very important part of all our lives. Think it's a bit strange.......my 2 cents worth.
