Thought it was pretty tacky of Costas and NBC to throw out a 2nd amendment arguement during halftime of the game tonight. Heres the quote if you missed it. ......................................................................................... "Well you knew it was coming. In the aftermath of the nearly unfathomable events in Kansas City, that most mindless of sports cliches was heard yet again: "Something like this really puts it all in perspective."
Well, if so, that sort of perspective has a very short shelf life. Since we will inevitably learn about the perspective we have supposedly again regained the next time ugly reality intrudes upon our games.
Please. Those that need tragedies to continually recalibrate their sense of proportions about sports would seem to have little hope of ever truly achieving perspective. You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City based writer Jason Whitlock, with whom I do not always agree, but who today said it so well, that we may as well just quote, or paraphrase, from the end of his article:
"Our current gun culture," Whitlock wrote, "ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead… Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it."
In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connections to football will be analyzed. "Who knows? But here," wrote Jason Whitlock, "is what I believe: if Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

Shut up, Bob. And, FTR, the First Amendment deals with the government's restraint of political speech, not some self-important asshat spouting his crap during a sporting event. Bob Costas is one of many people who, if you could buy them for what they're worth and sell them for what they think they're worth, it would be better than a Powerball win.

That's your opinion, like he is entitled to his, people get too sensitive if someone else gives their opinion. It is America, and people are allowed to give opinions. And he was actually paraphrasing another writer.

Both he and Whitlock were using the bully pulpit of the media to politicize a tragedy. It would have been more appropriate to just offer condolances to everyone who had been affected by the senselessness of the act. But they didn't, and rather than taking the high road they chose to attempt to advance a political agenda in bad taste. Do they have the freedom to do that? Absolutely. Was it in good taste? IMO it was not. I have the freedom to fart in an elevator full of people...but that doesn't mean that I should.

IMO, the tacky thing is all the coverage it is getting. This guy was a criminal, yet they keep mentioning him and how tragic his death was. I think the tragic thing was the death of his GF, but it seems like a lot of the people yesterday ignored that part when talking about him

self-important POS because that is MY strongly-held opinion. Costas has always been somebody who thought he was above the rest of us.
