I grew up pheasant hunting, but have gone in probably 10 years. My grandpa sold his farm land, my dog died, I moved across the state, and my gf/now wife HATES guns; so, I quit hunting. I've never gone, nor had interest in deer hunting.
Moving across the state also limited my access to farm ponds and decent lakes nearby, so I don't fish much anymore either. I took my girls (5 and 2) fishing for the first time when I went back home this summer, and that was a blast. So I might buy a license next year and take them more often.

I'll copy and paste this from another board I read about posting pictures of fishing and stuff. Brought me to tears.
"This is a picture of my first fish and probably my #1 favorite outdoor picture of all time. I think this was right around my 3rd birthday and is one of my earliest memories. I was bank fishing Cibolo Creek in Comal County on the ranch with the Bracken Bat cave. It was also my dad's deer lease where I shot my first deer at age 5.
"The fish was caught on an old school two-piece cane pole without a reel on a hook and a worm. It was getting late and my grandpa and dad were upstream on a bar and I was on a raised bank. When the fish hit it pulled so hard it drug me into the shallow water. My grandpa had to come running down the bank and put his arm around my chest, pick me up and carry me back up the bank far enough that the fish was drug out of the water. I remember him teaching me how to hold the fish for the picture. I had never held a fish before and wanted to do it myself. In my memories the fish was at least twice as big as it looks in the picture, maybe it's because I was 1/4 the size I am now.
This is the only picture I have found of me and my grandpa together, he died when I was 5 and my maternal grandpa died while I was in the womb. It is a scan of a Polaroid (high tech in those days). My dad still has that pocket knife."

That is cool. I will never forget the time I was fishing with my sons down at Coralville below the dam. My oldest was about 6 and my youngest was about 4. Anyone who has ever fished with little kids knows you get very little fishing done and spend most of your time teaching. Well, I had my oldest set and was working with my youngest son, when my oldest boy started telling me he had something and it was big. I looked over to him, still busy with my youngest and saw his pole bent over and naturally figured it was a snag, as he had managed to keep finding those all morning. I told him to reel it in, basically brushing him off, and continued on with my youngest. Well, the boy reeled in an 18 inch carp. I was amazed, and while we don't keep or eat carp, it was the biggest fish the kid had ever caught. His face was lit up with a grin from ear to ear, and when I went over to him to tell him he asked what kind of fish it was. When I told him it was a carp, he said, "maybe it's a magic carp." Those are the precious moments that money can't buy.

Agree 100% with the comments on taking kids fishing. I have several good stories in regards to times I took my kids fishing. Great times.
I took both my children hunting also. My daughter turned out to be a vegan and my son is a conviced felon so those kinds of stories about hunting adventures are fewer in number. You really get to spend sme excellent time together when out enjoying nature.
