A speed limit of 80

  • I took a route home tonight that I normally don't take and noticed the speed limit had changed from 75 to 80. This is a toll road that bypasses the city and doesn't get a ton of traffic, but that just seems a little high. I feel like a grandpa thinking that, but is it really necessary to drive 80-90 just to get somewhere in a non-emergency?

I think it's the highest one I've seen anywhere. Where else are they this high and do you think that's too high? What else is kinda weird, is that it used to be 75 during the day and 70 at night and now it's just 80 at all times. I know they're trying really hard to get truck drivers to go around the city because of traffic issues, so maybe that's the reason for it.

I'd rather they just gave them a free toll pass than have a bunch of terrible drivers tht think they're on the autobahn.

  • That is fast considering most people drive 5-10 over the limit.

  • Definitely the fastest I've heard of in the US. Is it a pretty straight/flat road, or are there a lot of hills and curves?

Yeah, it's pretty straight and flat and this stretch was only constructed a few years ago, so it's in good condition. It's also in central Texas, so weather doesn't play a big factor.

Considering the road and how far cars have come, it's not high in theory; but considering the driver's all of us see everyday, I'd rather just have them slow the hell down.

I'm completely comfortable driving that speed on a road like that, but I'm not at all comfortable with 80% of other people doing it.

Good point about other drivers. I've been on the autobahn in Germany, and it's not a big deal, because everyone is used to it. But I'd be a little worried about how people may drive on the road you're talking about without being used to it.
