My thoughts exactly on how it could go both ways, I guess imo I wouldn't want one. I like Iowa being the main draw and not having to compete with a NFL team, also like someone else said, no tradition, I would still be a Bears fan.
Some of my friends from Chicago pointed this out to me when I was at school, and I never realized it until then, but Iowa is the "professional sports team" here. They were always used to having all those teams in Chicago, so Illinois college sports were never a big deal for them, but for us Iowa is a huge deal.

That's one main reason I started this thread. I could see it going both ways. On one side, it's possible that an NFL team could lead to decreased passion for the Hawkeyes among the fan base over the long run. But on the other hand, I imagine the Hawkeye coaches would develop great relationships with the new NFL team, so that could only help them sell the program to recruits in the future. It'd also make football in the state of Iowa more visible across the country, which would help the Hawkeyes in recruiting as well. Lastly, it'd be another opportunity for football fans in Iowa to show how passionate they are about their team, which would also help the Iowa coaches on the recruiting trail.

Itd be interesting to see what Nebraska fans think about that hypothetical question, in Iowa you have both Iowa st and The Hawkeyes....we have UNL football and nothing else

I think NBA would work more than a NFL In all honesty
i think people would come out for it, hell Omaha sold every game out for Omaha Nighthawks so far and Omaha has 3 stadiums so far what's one more
Granted itll never happen IMO

That'd be a great question there as well. Both Nebraska and Iowa are the only game in town, so it could definitely be a lot different with an NFL team in the same state. What would you think about an NFL team in Nebraska?

Thanks for sharing. Some good points in that thread. On second thought, Bruntz made a good point about baseball possibly being too long of a season. I obviously don't know the local market in Omaha well enough, but could see any of the four major sports possibly succeeding there if it's done right.

I don't think I could ever support another NFL team besides my Packers.
I don't think Iowa fans would buy into an NBA team and I don't see Iowa being a state with a heap of hockey fans.
There are too many Cubs, Cardinals, and Twins fans in Iowa for a Major League team.
Iowa just doesn't have a metropolitan population to support a pro team IMO.

The Iowa Cubs (Des Moines) has also always had a big following. I think they're 16th as far as revenue, that was linked within the thread that Chad provided from their board. It was a really interesting article on minor league baseball.
I didn't realize this-"Of the 160 minor league teams with player development contracts with MLB team, not one pays a single player, coach, manager or trainer. While the majority of MLB teams' expenses go towards player costs, they are paid in full for minor league teams. The minor league squads don't even pay the full cost for bats and balls; it's split with the major league affiliate. It's a sweet deal made even sweeter by the cities and counties that are willing to finance minor league stadiums in order to help stimulate their local economies. "

Thanks for the info - didn't realize the Iowa Cubs were bringing in that much revenue.
I'm sure it helps that the major league club pays those salaries, but at least for the players, most of those guys aren't making very much. Unless they were a high draft pick or have dressed for at least one MLB regular season game, minor league players really don't make too much.
I'm not sure if it's still set up this way, but at least until recently, if you ever dressed for at least one MLB regular season game at any point in your career, you were guaranteed a minimum salary of at least $85,000 (I'm pretty sure that's the correct number - it's somewhere around there) per year for the rest of your career, even if you're only playing at the Single-A level. So those September call-ups are a very big deal for those guys.

Good points. I don't really follow baseball, but I always enjoyed going to Iowa Cubs games as a kid.
Probably because I grew up in Des Moines and it's nostalgic and it's a completely different game when you're there, and the place still has a place in my heart.

That's my line.
I like golden dogs analogy.
I lived in KC for 10 years 1998--2007 or about. I arrived when they had a dead downtown. It was a ghost town after 5pm daily departure of suburban workforce.
To make a long story short, the city leadership TIFed to the hilt and spurred billions in development that included a new arena that was the centerpiece of downtown urban revival. It was $240 million or so, a guaranteed draw for an NBA or possibly and NHL franchise team and revive KCs bidding for Big 12 BB tournaments. It's now referred to as the Donut Hole, A gleaming structure that hosts arena football and Rock concerts but no anchor team from the top tier sporting leagues.
If you build it... they may not come.

It is some serious Field of Dreams stuff, isn't it? There's just something about baseball and dads.
The guy that owns the Iowa Cubs is the father of my best friend growing up who passed away at 17. He pretty much bought it because his dad took him there as a kid and then he took his kids there growing up.

I wouldn't know, because they weren't making much noise this year...

Would you want an NFL team in Iowa?
