Would you want an NFL team in Iowa?

  • Just a topic for fun here. I realize this likely won't happen any time soon, but let's say the NFL announced tomorrow that it wanted to place a franchise in Iowa (probably in Des Moines, but it could be anywhere within the state). Would you be in favor of that? Why or why not?

And as a bonus, how about an NBA, MLB or NHL franchise?

  • It would be cool if it was a successful team and it did well on the field and off. But I think the state is too divided it would have a hard time getting fans from The Vikings, Packers, and Bears.

I would be down for an NBA team. The Bulls are too far away and nobody wants to see The Timberwolves biggrin.

  • Any pro team locating in Iowa would do about as well as Iowa corn planted in December.

  • No NFL...I love the fact that the college teams draw all of the loyalty/$, etc. in Iowa. NBA: I would not walk across the street to see an NBA game. Baseball: I would be fine with that, though I live only an hour from Miller Park and rarely go to games...too many demands on my time in retirement (eat your hearts out, workers!).

  • NFL - Don't really care that much, so no. NBA, MLS and NHL - hell no. MLB - might be kinda cool to have a team in DSM - Iowa Oaks? Iowa Goldfinches? Iowa Acorns?

  • NFL I would like and I think it could possibly work as far as getting fans to games. NHL could possibly work, I know some of the lower level hockey franchises do a very good job of promoting their teams, so assuming an NHL team would be smart enough to hire some of them, I would probably give them the benefit of the doubt. MLB would be nice, however it would never work, I don't think we could fill a 15,000 seat MLB stadium for 162+ games unless we were an extremely good team and/or had a couple high profile players. NBA wouldn't care much about, probably would be similar to MLB.

  • I wouldn't follow an NFL team in Iowa. An NBA team would be fun though, I'd definitely pay to go see them play a lot even if I never actually became a fan of them.

Those guys all held up just fine this past year. The Reds had arguably the best bullpen in the league in 2012. It may not be quite as good with Chapman moving to a starting role in 2013, but they've still got some quality talent and depth in the bullpen. They may not win the whole thing, but I don't think it'll be because Dusty wore out the starting pitchers.

  • Just sticking with NFL here, how do you think it would impact the Hawkeyes? Positive, negative?

That's one main reason I started this thread. I could see it going both ways. On one side, it's possible that an NFL team could lead to decreased passion for the Hawkeyes among the fan base over the long run. But on the other hand, I imagine the Hawkeye coaches would develop great relationships with the new NFL team, so that could only help them sell the program to recruits in the future. It'd also make football in the state of Iowa more visible across the country, which would help the Hawkeyes in recruiting as well. Lastly, it'd be another opportunity for football fans in Iowa to show how passionate they are about their team, which would also help the Iowa coaches on the recruiting trail.

My thoughts exactly on how it could go both ways, I guess imo I wouldn't want one. I like Iowa being the main draw and not having to compete with a NFL team, also like someone else said, no tradition, I would still be a Bears fan.

Some of my friends from Chicago pointed this out to me when I was at school, and I never realized it until then, but Iowa is the "professional sports team" here. They were always used to having all those teams in Chicago, so Illinois college sports were never a big deal for them, but for us Iowa is a huge deal.
