Why haven't we offered Justin Jackson?

  • We need playmakers on the offensive side of the ball and Jackson has been to Iowa a couple of times and Coach Wilkens has told me that if Iowa offered they would be tough to beat. He also told me that he does everything for them and is electric with the ball in his hands, a threat to score every time he touches the ball. An outstanding kid and very good student, with offers from NW and Vandy already. I hope we are not waiting for Jones causing us to miss out on Jackson.

  • Certainly sounds like a prototypical Iowa recruit. Why not? Especially if schools like NW and Vandy have offered.

    GO HAWKS!!!

  • I really liked his film. Not sure what the coaches are waiting on. Will be highly sought after and his interest in Iowa. Seems like a no-brainer.

  • Agreed kc

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

This. Was also very impressed with his film and don't have a clue what the coaches are waiting for. Especially considering that it sounds like he might be enrolling early at whatever school he chooses, it could benefit us a ton.

The obvious answer is that there are others ahead of him on Iowa's board, but I know that's not what you're asking. As to why that is, which is the real issue, that remains unclear. I agree with you though - Iowa would have a great shot to land him, but the Hawkeyes can't wait too long.

I'm sorry, but Iowa is not in a position to be picky...especially when it comes to 4☆, Top 150 recruits....get them while their hot!

  • TOS doesn't even list Iowa as a school of interest for Jackson, so it begs the question of whether or not he really is that interested, or is fishing for offers. Maybe the coaching staff senses something about him. If he genuinely is interested, I agree, I wouldn't be the late suitor at the dance given our recent track record with RBs.

On a side note, I haven't heard a thing for some time on Braden Smith. Todd, any general idea if the Hawks are even in the mix anymore?

  • Iowa obviously sees the pecking order at running back as: Jones, Wilbon, Jackson. I agree, though, that Iowa should offer him ASAP.

  • Jackson has been on campus a few times on his own dime, believe me he is interested. I wouldn't have brought this up if I didn't think Iowa could land him. The new article on the kid from SD is certainly interesting as he brought up play calling and verticle routes as the reason to visit WI. These kids notice the crap offense we run and this was a huge knock on Davis when he was at Texas, receiver didn't like to play in his offense and if he had a verticle threat he didn't use them to their ablility.

It's possible that Iowa doesn't think as highly of him as other schools and/or recruiting services do.

TOS just released their top 250. Justin Jackson is not only in it, he is rated a 5.9, meaning he will probably be Top 150 there as well.

Who would have thought we would ever be in a position to turn away Top 150 talent? Maybe the future is brighter than we realize :)

In all seriousness, I hope the staff decides to offer sooner rather than later. I would hate for this to turn into another Montee Ball scenario. Kid wants to be a Hawk, says nothing but great things about us, but for whatever reason the staff drags their feet, and then by the time they offer the kid has moved on. I think Montee turned out all right.

Jackson has been rated in the Top150 with 247Sports since mid August.

Pretty sure it was J. White not Montee Ball.

  • Sorry Todd, didn't mean to overlook or diminish the value of your ranking. I was assuming everyone was already aware of it. Because TOS was new info today, I highlighted it, and mentioned "there as well" implying in addition to 247.

Also, you are correct that the same occurred with James White, and that process actually drug out longer than Montee. However, early in the recruiting process, when Montee was still a 3 star recruit, he was extremely high on Iowa, but we didn't offer for whatever reason, and he moved on, committing to Wiscy, and eventually earning 4 star status. In fact I remember thinking there was a chance he would be our first commit of the class, prior to his senior season.

No worries, I didn't take it that way. Was just using it to bolster your argument.

    It's possible....they can't tell time on the field either...so...

In all seriousness, you recruit him as an ATH, let him know he'll get every shot at RB, so's not to scare off Jones. If he were to beat out Jones (Oh man what a problem to have...), so be it, if not, look at him for special teams/secondary. Lord knows, it wouldn't hurt a thing to bring in a higher class of athlete to the program for once.
