Who starts at QB for Iowa in 2013?

I think this year will be a lot like the year when Stanzi and Christensen were battling it out. I think Ferentz let's them battle it out during the nonconference game and then decided on a starter going into week 1 of the B1G season.

That could certainly be the case, especially if it's a very close race between two (or three) quarterbacks, and the offense hasn't really clicked under any one of them yet.

I dont know as that he would transfer, bog reason he also came here was medical school. And to answer the question about Davis having a say, I read Kirk was giving him more control over the offense however I will believe it when I see it. Also we are not changing from a pro style offense, they are just going to incorporate more into it, Anjus said one reason he came here was for the pro style offense I thought I read. Just because they may run more spread doesn't mean it will be anymore exciting plays

While I don't think Iowa will be running a traditional spread offense, I think it'll be different than it has been in the Ferentz era. It seems like fullbacks may not be used very often, and more receivers will be on the field per play. You can still run a balanced offense out of those sets, so that doesn't mean the Hawkeyes will suddenly start throwing the ball 50 times a game. But the play-calling, formations and personnel groupings look to be headed in another direction.

  • My prediction is that its someone who performs better than Vandenberg and we will have to hear all season "why didn't Ferentz play this guy instead?"

Good point, and like I said, a lot more would go into any decision on whether to transfer than just his fball career....but lets not forget that Iowa isn't the only university with a medical school.

Schools like Duke, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest all have great medical schools....and may also have need for a talented QB.

He might I was just saying that was one of his reasons for coming here. I think he deserves a shot but I would hate for the best q.b to not start just because they are afraid someone may transfer, I have heard many good things about C.J which is why I am leaning towards him, the only thing I wonder about in the whole situation is if they just are not impressed with Jake, I have never seen him play so I am strictly going on what I have read, I am excited about the potential of all of them I just hope to god whoever it is, is better than JVB.

  • I have been left questioning Ferentz's coaching and decision making since he chose to "take a knee" at Ohio State.

This past season we all were left scratching our heads that with 30,000 students at Iowa, Vandenberg was the best QB. Most of us on this board could draw up a better playbook than the washed up, has-been Texas leftover in an offensive coordinator.

What Ferentz ought to do is have open scrimmages in Kinnick. Each QB will play an entire scrimmage. Then let the fans vote for the QB they see as the best. This way none of us have to witness the saga like last season and wonder if a QB holding a clipboard on the sidelines might be better.

  • Rudock may stay, and I hope he does, but my gut tells me if he doesn't win the starting job he's probably gone. The factors simply line up:

    1. He was a high-level recruit.

    2. The guy who in essence recruited him, KOK, is gone.

    3. He was attracted to a pro-style offense, and there appears to be a shift away from that, at least to a degree.

    4. He is a long way from home.

Perhaps over the past two years, he has become attached to I.C., but it's hard to see him settling for holding a clipboard again. That said, I agree we should never start a player simply because he may tuck tail and leave. He needs to earn it.

  • I'm going with Rudock based strictly on his pedigree. He played for a great Florida HS program. Aquinas was 27-1 record in his 2 years as a starter. State champs as a senior, runners-up as a junior, and was 2nd string QB as a soph on a 15-0 state championship team.

I am not as concerned as some with Rudock not getting any snaps last year. That was KF's decision and it was not unprecedented. When Stanzi was a senior and JVB a soph, JVB only threw the ball 8 times, played in only 3 games and didn't take a single snap after the 4th OOC game. And JVB had more than proven himself as a competent back-up the year before when Stanzi was injured and missed the last three Big 10 games.

  • Ok, I've seen enough people speculating that Rudock might transfer if he doesn't start next year, so I'll do my best to infuse a little logic into your thinking.

Rudock will be a *RS*-So next year, when he seems to have a good chance of starting, meaning he has **3** years left to play at **Iowa**. Here's the problem with him transferring, he's already used his RS and he would be an idiot (and he knows this) if he left at the only conceivable time for him, which is at the end of this semester. If he stayed and didn't start this year, it still makes no sense to transfer unless he'll have graduated a full year early, as that is the only way he would even have a chance of playing more than 1 year for another school because he would have to sit out a year with no RS. Other QB's have been successful transferring to other schools for just their last years, but all of those QB's had previous starting experience.

So let's review, there are only 2 options that would make it conceivable for Rudock to transfer:

    1. Rudock transfers after this semester, sits out this coming year (when he would have had a chance to start at Iowa), and *possibly* starts for 2 years at a lessor school.

    2. Rudock stays, get's little to no experience at QB, **MUST** graduate early so he wouldn't have to sit out a year at another school, and *possibly* starts for 2 years at a lessor school.

Great points here. The one thing I'd add is that, if being the starter is the primary goal, he may be willing to transfer to an FCS school so he can play immediately.

Also, I'd be a little surprised if there is a clear frontrunner for the starting job after spring practice, meaning that Rudock probably won't know for sure if he's the man until August, at the earliest, so it really wouldn't make sense to leave at the end of the semester. The one thing that could potentially hasten his departure is if, for whatever reason, both Sokol and Beathard outperform him to a significant degree this spring, and he's a distant third on the depth chart as a result. No inside information there - just presenting a possible, albeit unlikely, scenario.

That's exactly what I was trying to say with the above 2 quotes.

Yep, so it seems pretty unlikely that he'd transfer at the end of this semester. The only other possible reason to leave at the end of this semester that might make sense is that if he decides that the new offensive system just doesn't fit him, and he wants to find a better fit elsewhere.

  • i only want to see the best playmaker there. all the current guys must have the arm, and some success somewhere. but all i want is a playmaker - last 2 of 3 guys could never create anything - but the word was they could throw the ball hard. Need a playmaker.

  • I got to go with Cody Sokol. He has already played decent competition in a spread style offense in college. I would put my money on Sokol, but it is anyones guess.
