Who starts at QB for Iowa in 2013?

  • Should be a heated competition both this spring and in fall camp, and it could possibly extend into the season. Who do you think it'll be? Who do you want it to be? My early prediction is Cody Sokol, but I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Rudock or Beathard win it.

  • I think Ferentz goes with Sokol regardless of who is better simply because of game experience.

It's hard to imagine Rudock is that much worse than Vandenberg. It's still a mystery why he never got a snap.

I liked how both were looking last spring, I think Rudock has a high ceiling, but I'm not sure the coaches have begun to fully tap his potential yet. Sokol is not a bad 2nd option and maybe based on pure playing experience, might be in a better position to succeed than Rudock. I wouldn't be totally surprised to see either start, and I also wouldn't be surprised to see the competition taking until late in the fall to be determined.

It'll be interesting to see how patient Ferentz is with the starter. With Vandenberg being a returning starter, Ferentz obviously trusted him to rebound when he struggled. If Iowa loses a game or two early, and/or the starting quarterback isn't playing well, will Ferentz be more likely to pull him?

  • From Ferentz's perspective, the ideal situation would probably be for the whoever wins the job to play well right off the bat, lead the team to a fast start (4-0 in the nonconference), and cement himself as the guy. But with so many other holes on last year's offense, it may not be easy for a first year starter, no matter who it is, to come in and play well right off the bat. With that in mind, it could turn into a sticky situation.

Sokol definitely has that advantage over Rudock at this point. Rudock could potentially have the edge in terms of chemistry with his teammates, as he's been at Iowa one more season than Sokol has.

  • Unless somebody pulls away in fall camp, I expect to see some rotation in the first couple games, much like 2008. I'd like to see a starter established by week 3 vs ISU, but won't be shocked if takes until the B1G opener @ Minny.

I think Sokol is the game 1 "starter", but ends the season in the #2 spot. That prediction is based on absolutely nothing but my gut.

  • I don't know what Ferentz is thinking lately so I have no idea. He had zero coaching staff changes forever and now it's like a coaching carousel. Hopefully he really does leave it open for a battle and the best man comes out on top.

  • Before bringing in GD, I would've thought it safe for Ruddock. But now Ruddock and Sokol got exposed to a new offense at the same time. There were whispers that there were players who wanted Ruddock to start, and it would not surprise me that KF refused to play him just to keep from having to deal with a QB controversy.

Honestly I cannot say who will win the competition. Just as long as its not Jake Christensen, I'm good.

  • If Kirk doesn't want to deal with a qb controversy then we are lost. I really would like to believe that Kirk would play the best player regardless but last year sure as hell did have me scratching my head.

  • Going with Beathard but Sokol is very close

  • With the looks of the new signing class, we may be looking at a whole new animal in both the coaching staff and the offensive strategy, as well as the type of quarterback that best fits a new system.

Is it possible the old pro-style QB is out the window? Wasn't that why Ruddock headed to Iowa? Pro football styles are evolving also, so maybe KF is giving some second thought to a new offensive scheme. Obviously, B1G teams with more success than Iowa as of late are playing with a different look to them than in years past. Remember how things were getting stale and predictable?

Not sure how each QB measures up, but I would look for the most mobile, more speed than others, and a quick release with accuracy. Maybe they will go with two different looks on offense, using two different types of QBs, running two different schemes. Maybe the old days of opponents knowing Iowa's predictable game plan months before they play them will be out the window.

After a 4-8 season, and possibly more of the same next year, what is there to lose by shaking things up? Who knows, maybe it will even make the Hawkeyes "sexy".

  • Very difficult call at this stage, and, obviously, Spring ball will help sort this out.

I can't hazard a guess as to who will win the starting spot, but I will predict now that if Rudock doesn't win it, he transfers.

  • Just recently, I re-read Rudock's credentials from his high school years in Florida. They are beyond very impressive! I remember when he was a hot ticket on the message boards...if we don't get him, the Iowa program is doomed to long term failure. He stayed solid, then Miami came in late and tried hard to get him to stay home...again, the doom and gloom surrounding rumors that he would de-commit and go to the Hurricanes were widely circulated.

Just based on the above, I am going to guess Rudock emerges as the starter. I have no inside information and recognize that not only Rudock, but also Sokol and Beathard, have not played a down in a college football game. That does not really bother me as much as many posters...they learn in practice, a least for the most part.

I would not be surprised if we see more than one QB in 2013. Of course, I hope one guy emerges as a clear starter, but at least at the beginning of the season, I am not sure that will happen. Geez, I love college football.

  • I wonder how much say Greg Davis has in picking the starter.

My comment from the 'Grading QB' thread...

If Rudock doesn't start this year, I suspect he'll transfer. I don't know the kid, and obviously more goes into a decision like that than just his fball career...(he may love the academic and social side of being in I.C. for all I know)....but he was highly touted coming in, and considered the heir apparent once JV graduated. To get beat out at Iowa pretty much seals his fate of ever getting a chance to play, let alone start, unless there is an injury of course. This past year showed that to be a fact. If Sokol wins the battle, there may be a greater chance he sticks around, but if its the underclassman Beathard who beats him out, I think he transfers....also, I think he'll be considered a 'bust' by many.

I think this year will be a lot like the year when Stanzi and Christensen were battling it out. I think Ferentz let's them battle it out during the nonconference game and then decided on a starter going into week 1 of the B1G season.

I dont know as that he would transfer, bog reason he also came here was medical school. And to answer the question about Davis having a say, I read Kirk was giving him more control over the offense however I will believe it when I see it. Also we are not changing from a pro style offense, they are just going to incorporate more into it, Anjus said one reason he came here was for the pro style offense I thought I read. Just because they may run more spread doesn't mean it will be anymore exciting plays

  • It's like we're living in the Twilight Zone, imho.

It was just last season where we had some pretty poor QB play and more
inexplicably, there was never a change at QB.

It's impossible to predict, at this point, but I'm very hopeful that
Jake R is rewarded for sticking it out, learning 'the system' whatever that is, anyway. (No one knew last year)
By all accounts, Jake Rudock is a very good student, teammate and so far, Hawkeye.
He deserves his chance.......and really....there's NO way his play could be worse than the 2012 effort.

I would imagine he'll have a great deal of influence on that decision, considering he's the coordinator and coaches that position. Like everything, it'll be Ferentz's call at the end of the day, but I would assume Ferentz will give Davis' decision a lot of weight.
