Valentine and thoughts

  • 1. The tv cameras showed Valentine chatting it up with Izzo quite a few times during timeouts and before the 2nd half. It appears these 2 have a good relationship.

    2. The officiating changed in the 2nd half. I think I counted maybe only 3 or 4 fouls called on MSU. Nix was allowed to play bulldozer on offense several times. MSU was allowed to play 2nd half defense with 2 hands reaching in. MSU player can jump up on top of an Iowa player (Basabe) and the player on the bottom gets called for the foul. White can block a jump shot and get all ball (replay showed) and according to Valentine, it was a hack on the wrist.
These plays are examples of ways poor officiating help MSU earn points.

    3. Usually when bad calls are made, officials give make-up calls going the other way. Valentine didn't.

    On the other hand...

    1. Same story line with Iowa in not closing out a game with the lead.

    2. I don't know the turnover numbers, but they had to be around 20+ for Iowa.

    3. Clemmons had a few obvious headaches. Turning the ball over. Bad pass to a wide open White.

    4. The notorious "stand around the perimeter" offense was once played again in the final 5 minutes.

    5. Woodbury should have been playing inside for defense in the final 8 minutes. Instead, he was on the bench. Basabe was not big enough to take on Nix on his own.

I don't know if it's conditioning, youth, poor end-of-game game planning, or a mixture. But losing games in the final minutes after having a good lead is becoming a broken record.

You won't find an MSU fan who thinks that TV Teddy is a respectable official, or even a decent human being. He loves following coaches into timeout huddles and hamming it up for the cameras when he makes a call.

Your team played their tails off last night and I honestly have no idea how MSU managed to turn it around. Seemed like Iowa was getting to every loose ball, getting high quality shots on offense, and forcing bad ones on defense. Iowa could be a real player in the B1G next season.

I think Iowa needs one more good player to be a contender. We have good players, but not consistent and not a reliable go-to player.

Mich St also appeared to have more athletic players and size and they showed it when the game was on the line.

Iowa also can be its' own worst enemy with blown bunny shots and dumb turnovers.

Mich St really turned up and played very good perimeter defense the last 10 minutes of the game and swarmed our young backcourt.

While frustrating for Iowa fans, last night's game is everything a B1G game should represent -- minus poor officiating

confused I seem to remember a few atrocious calls going against each team. Early in the game Payne and Basabe(?) were sliding out of bounds fighting over a loose ball. Payne got hit with a foul even though a competent ref like Steratore would have either called a jump ball or not even blown his whistle.

You guys definitely have the coach for it. I'm only recalling one blowout loss for you this season, against Michigan. Played all the other contenders really tough and even beat Wisconsin. It's hard to imagine the B1G getting any more brutal than it has been the past two seasons, but it's a real possibility next season if Iowa joins the fray at the top.

  • The conference officials are pretty terrible across the board. Save for a couple solid ones. The stripes last night were terrible from whistle to whistle. It didn't benefit one team or another.

Teddy is the worst Big Ten official in the history of the league.
At least, Ed Hightower calls the game fairly. Sure, he can make mistakes as everyone can.
But, he does so fairly. Has a sense for fairness.
To Teddy, the game is more about him, than the players.

What about Jim Bain? He was the worst bum of all time in our league.

I think Iowa is clearly good enough to be in the field, and better than at least some of the teams that will land at-large bids. But there are specified criteria that all coaches and athletic directors know about well in advance. Based on those criteria, I don't think Iowa has earned a bid to the Big Dance this year.

First of all, I honestly felt like Iowa got the benefit of the whistle in the first half. Michigan State went up strong inside a lot, and wasn't getting many calls that were possible fouls. Michigan State got the better end of the calls in the second half, but I've seen a lot worse-officiated games than that.

They definitely missed the shot clock violation, but that's a tough call to make live because it's pretty close. It's ridiculous that that can't be replayed, however, in the same way an end-of-half buzzer beater can be.

The no-call when Marble went up for the three wasn't that bad, IMO. I honestly thought that was 50-50 because, while the defender did commit and jump in the air, Marble went out of his way to initiate the contact. That's sometimes called a foul, but refs have been gradually giving the offense the benefit of the doubt less and less in that situation over the past few years.

Didn't think the no-call on Basabe's dunk/layup attempt was bad at all. The defender got a lot of ball, and there was less contact with Basabe than there was on some of Iowa's blocks in the first half that weren't called fouls.

On Nix's and-one, he probably did travel, but that's often not called when it happens while a player is being fouled. I think it could have gone either way.

Regarding the "headlock" McCabe was put in, he was also holding onto the MSU player's arm for dear life while losing his balance. Especially at that stage of the game, I'm fine with a no-call when it could have gone either way, and it didn't affect the action on the court.

On MSU's offensive rebound to go up 57-49, that was one case where I thought the broadcast did an awful job of not showing the replay. Thought there could have been a foul called on MSU, but with no replay, it's tough to tell for sure.

I thought that was definitely a bad call when they whistled White for a foul with 30 seconds left.

I didn't think Marble got fouled on that final three. The defender was standing straight up in legal guarding position, and just wasn't giving Marble any room to shoot. The only way that's called a foul is if it's LeBron or Kobe taking the shot.

On the foul they whistled on Basabe in the video linked at the end, I thought that was a good call. If you undercut a player while he's in the air, they're going to call it on you. It just looked bad because Basabe got the wrong end of the collision from a player landing on top of him.

I agree with you a lot Todd, but I absolutely cannot agree with that statement. It was a foul. No question. Marble used the pump fake, the MSU player jumped towards Marble to block it and regardless of the shot motion that Marble was taking, would have landed on Marble regardless. It's a clear foul. It is different when a defender jumps straight up, but when they make a motion that takes them into the shooter, it's a foul. The announcers were baffled as well.

I'm not going to list all the bad calls in the game because it would take me forever. It was a physical game No doubt about it. A lot of calls were let go in the first half for both teams and I thought it called fairly well in the 1st half. The second half though, it was the complete opposite. You cannot tell me that MSU had 3 fouls through 17 minutes of that half of basketball and Iowa had 9. Iowa still should have won the game in spite of the officiating. Our last 5 minutes of offense were anemic. Clemmons missing a wide open White for a lay up being the highlight. But you cannot say that the officials didn't cause at minimum a 5 point swing in that game. (marble's 3 and White's CLEAR block.) Don't worry Izzo. Teddy V to the rescue. I hate to blame officials for a loss and Iowa definitely didn't help themselves with their ball control, but when officials directly effect the outcome of a game, it is inexcusable and it is happening far too often in college basketball nowadays(see: Charlotte's win)

B1G officials have been horrible this year in games for all teams, not just Iowa. It is an epidemic and until officials are held accountable for poor officiating, nothing will change. The NCAA needs to step in and discipline their officials when they make such obvious mistakes.

To clarify, I wasn't saying that it definitely wasn't a foul, but just that I thought it was at least arguable. We can agree to disagree, though.

That's fine with me, Todd. I always respect your opinion and probably should have stated that in my previous post. Rarely do I disagree with it. I've played basketball all my life and watched it all my life as well. I've even officiated some. In my opinion, I felt it was a foul. I just don't think the officials wanted to give Iowa the opportunity to bump their lead back up to 13.

    cheers

These are really where I was frustrated with how things were called. You hit 1 right on the head, absolutely no reason they can't review this. If they had called it a shot clock violation, it can be reviewed (or at least it was against Nebraska last week).

I thought Nix's travel was a bad call in general. I really didn't think McCabe fouled him, especially because Nix lost balance and fell forward into McCabe. Really nothing Zach could do there unless he just grabbed and pulled him down, which likely becomes flagrant.

That foul on White is really the most angering one. Iowa would have had a chance to win the game, it would have been solely in THEIR hands. When you put a guy to the line like that (especially after the 50/50 calls that Marble didn't get earlier - keep this consistent please) it takes it from a win possession to a tie possession. I'd be fine if Iowa lost by just 1 and they actually had the chance to win. It just took a different spin, tough to accept right away.

I actually am the other way on the Basabe foul. He really was just kind of in a position with nothing to do. Payne jumped on him, I would have left that as a no call, it really didn't look like a foul on either team.
