Todd- question about Joel Lanning

  • How come Iowa didn't offer this athlete from Ankeny or was he a Clones fan all the way?

I just saw his name on the bracket at 220 lb for the State wrestling tourney. That really jumped out at me since he played QB. I've read somewhere that he's a tough boy (one of those articles about the CIML QBs). Now, I can see him as another Matt Bowen at S. Is he similar to Jewell? (I guess he's the same size as Jewell and Kenny, so...).

    Anyone on here from Ankeny?

My understanding was that by the time Iowa might have offered, he'd already committed to Iowa State and seemed pretty solid with that.

  • What I've heard about Lanning is simply that he wanted a shot at QB and Iowa wasn't going to give it to him. That's hearsay from folks that know Joel and his family.

  • I think Lanning's a very good athlete and was a master running Pezzetti's offense. He's very shifty but I didn't enough speed out of him to think he could play safety.

Because of his size and football IQ, I can see him at linebacker, which is where a lot of bigger QBs seem to end up (AJ Derby), along with TE (but at 6-2, he may be too short for TE).

I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at LB in Ames.

  • Thanks guys.

Yeah, at that height, I think he will end up at LB as well. That's why I mentioned Jewell and Kenny. I think he will make some noise in his 3rd year.

  • IIRC Iowa State is bringing in two dual threat quarterbacks this class. I'm guessing those two will fight it out and whoever loses will be moved to a different position. I bet Lanning ends up at linebacker.
