Thoughts on the class so far.

  • So how does everyone feel about the recruiting class right now? I think Iowa has some solid commits from some good prospects. Iowa has Goebel, Kenny, and Gressel sitting at a ranking of 88. If those guys finish out their careers at Iowa, you know the staff will develop them into 93's. The kid with probably the highest ceiling is David Kenney. I finally watched his film and he looked quick. Iowa has a future pass rusher coming off the edge. I was going to say the sleeper of the bunch maybe Delano Hill, but with his recent performances at some camps, the secret is out.

The surprise commitment to this date is Shimonek. Totally off the radar to recruting services and fans, but evidently not to the staff. I just hope he works out for Iowa and for Davis. Coach Davis has to be taking a risk here because other schools were not really looking at him. Davis may know talent when he sees it and some Iowa fans say "trust the staff" but has Davis been at Iowa long enough to build that trust? Davis may have the trust of the staff and it should be good enough for me, but I can't help but think if Shimonek is good enough for Iowa is he good enough for Texas? Sounds like coach Davis did his due diligence on Shimonek and watched him throw and also watched his high school tape from his freshman year. I just hope coach Davis realizes the talent difference between the two schools because Texas has no problems recruiting quality kids where as the margin for error for Iowa is much smaller.

Iowa appears to have anywhere between 10 - 12 shollies left for this class. I would like to see a true OT, RB, 2 WR, 2 LB, DE, DT, CB, S to fill this class. I am a little disappointed to see Iowa not in the running for many 4 star kids if any at all. Losing Allen and Campos hurt, so who out there that is rated a 4 star does Iowa have a realistic shot with?

    Curious to read your thoughts.

The awesome thing about this class is you failed to mention Derek Willies. The kid has great height & size not to mention is ripping it up in track right now.

    All our recruits are exciting

You are right, Willies has gotten much faster just from the beginning of track season. He has cut a full second off his 110m hurdles, down to a 14.07 (#19 in the U.S. & #2 in Illinois) and almost 2 seconds off his 300m hurdles, down to a 38.04 (#89 in u.S. & #2 in Illinois). It looks like he has been working out very hard to lower his times like that. With his size and speed, Willies will be a great weapon for the hawkeyes.

In my opinion, Hill and kenney are the recruits with the highest upside. I can see both starting early in their careers, and eventually becoming all big 10 performers. I was really upset when Allen chose Ole Miss because of his fierce hitting skills, but Hill may be a better all around safety. Excellent job by the staff to get him committed so early!

I don't think Iowa will get any 4 star recruits this season, unless some of the current 3 star commits rise to 4 stars, which I think will happen. That is alright though, Iowa has done an excellent job with 3 star recruits, and most of the current commits have great potential.

I'm sure the staff will also identify under the radar recruits that explode during their senior years as well. If Iowa is able to get a currently ranked 4 star recruit, they will have the best shot with Augusta or Hicks, and a long shot with Mike Mitchell.

  • As fans we tend to put too much stock in the rankings of recruits. Especially fans of teams who consistently get players with 4☆ and 5☆ rankings (You know who you are). Today I was looking at 247's top 10 classes for 2013. For whatever reason, I was drawn to South Carolina's 10th rated class. Curious, I went to see what made it so special. 4 kids rated at 90 and 1 at 91 that helped their cause. Good for them.

One of those 4☆ recruits was DE/ILB, named David Johnson, whose measurables was 6'1 240lbs. Well that compares well to David Kenney's, who we're thinking was downgraded due to his height. So I checked out his video. Good for South Carolina. Not that the kid isn't deserving of a 90 ranking and a 4☆, but I would take David Kenney's game and the 86, 3☆ ranking that comes with him easily. Hands down. Its not even fair. Kenney is far more explosive off the ball and has better moves (his swim technique is impressive for a high school kid). What I found to be to be startling is that after Kenney's initial burst off the ball, and he gets by the blocker, he has another gear. He flat out gets to the ball carrier. I saw none of that from Johnson. Like I said before, its not a knock on Johnson, its something special we get in Kenney. There will be several coaches kicking themselves in the years to come for whiffing on this kid.

Delano Hill. First off, I am curious as to why he committed as early as he did. He still had combines to attend that would have coaches there. Coaches that most likely had not seen him play. From what I am hearing, he "wowed" at these combines. I blame Lile and Taylor for this. Thanks guys! Everybody on this and I am sure every other Hawkeye forum, myself included, was going gaga over Antonio Allen. And rightfully so. Allen is a tremendous player. Forget about him. I was not upset when Hill committed to us, prior to Allen's visit. Would I liked to have Allen too? Sure. But since it didn't happen, oh well.

Gressel and Bazata are typical Iowa interior defensive linemen. Undersized, but powerful and nasty. Just what we need to go with the Kenney and the DE's from 2012's class.

John Kenny I think is going to be a player who will get his shot probably as a RS-sophomore. I really think hes that good.

At the same time, I think Willis will also get his shot as a RS-sophomore. Once he gets the offense down, I think he can be something really good on the outside as a deep threat.

Shimonek...well that remains to be seen. A big kid with a big arm, fast release, questionable mechanics at times and two hunks of concrete wrapped around his feet. I think he may be, in the end, a security blanket for Greg Davis. A career back-up if you will. Someone who doesn't have the athletic ability to be a star, but won't kill you if have to go to a back up QB in the middle of the 2nd quarter.

I still think we will get 2 RB's, at least 1 or 2 OT, maybe a C/OG, 3-4 WR/DB with speed (duh), an ILB and TE.

  • The good thing about having eight commits so far is that the coaches can focus a little more on the top targets. Also, it appears that the coaches are done recruiting quarterbacks other than Davis Webb, so that's another relief in terms of saving time in evaluating. Right now, I think the biggest remaining needs in this class are offensive tackle, defensive end, linebacker and receiver. Iowa has actually talked to Sean Welsh about possibly playing offensive tackle, so he could be the answer there. David Kenney was a huge get, but I still think Iowa needs to land one or two more defensive ends, with one of them being able to make an impact early on. So by the 2014 season, Ott, Venckus, Kenney and whoever else is added to this class should give Iowa a pretty good stable of young pass rushers.

  • I'm ecstatic about the class so far, especially considering how few commitments Iowa has historically gotten in the pre-June 1st (i.e. pre-summer camp) time period. The coaches have done a great job early this year.

  • It's a solid class, but I'm not really excited about it. I'd feel better if we had a top OT in the fold. We seem to be in good shape with a number of quality WR's. I like the LB's we are chasing, but I don't feel very good about our chances with any of them. I think we really need a good RB, but, again, I'm not wowed by any of the guys we know about it. Outside of Hill and Kenney, a bunch of typical Iowa recruits. No one who is likely to emerge early, but several who will like develop into solid players.

I think Brian Ferentz has been a huge asset in Ohio thus far. And Eric Johnson always did a great job in Indianapolis, but Iowa finally found a match of very good players with mutual interest in that area, and it's paid off this year. Also, as others have said, Coach Campbell deserves a ton of credit for closing the deal with Delano Hill before his recruitment could really blow up.

I agree with you that a top offensive tackle would be a key addition to this class. Campos would have been the obvious guy there, but Iowa has to find someone even better now.

Agree with pretty much what you said concerning the Iowa recruits, especially Shimonek. I just don't think Iowa can afford to bring in a QB that is going to be just a "security blanket." Iowa needs kids that will come in and compete for the job and I know the staff doesn't recruit this way - meaning Iowa recruits kids with the intentions of coming in to play. Personally, I hope Shimonek is the second coming of Chuck Long, After all, he was lightly recruited too, but I just can't get the idea out of my head that Davis is rolling the dice here.

  • This. This is a solid but not spectacular class. Goebel, Kenny, Kenney, Hill are solid kids and I wouldn't trade them for anyone, but right now, this class is filing up with kids who may need a year or two to develop. This appears to me to be a class, assuming they all stay, that provides depth for the program.

    Todd,

A couple questions for you. You have praised Brian Ferentz a few times for his work in Ohio. Gressel is the lone commitment from Ohio, was Brian behind that? Also, with knowledge you have, to what extent has Brian done a good job recruiting Ohio? Is his success attributed to the number of doors he has opened for Iowa or what is his secret in your opinion? Thanks

Just curious since this is Brian's first time around the block concerning recruiting.

That'd be great. If he takes care of business in the classroom and shows he can be an impact player at defensive end, then I'd be all for it. Still, though, he'd only have two years of eligibility remaining. It'd be nice to add at least one more class of 2013 defensive end to the mix.

Yes and no. Losing Campos and Bosch was tough, but Iowa did land Goebel, which was a nice get. At running back, Iowa missed on several top targets, but when you look at the offer list those kids had, it makes sense.

Tough for Iowa to beat schools like Alabama for an out-of-state recruit. While Iowa does have a very good reputation for producing NFL defensive linemen, Alabama's track record isn't too shabby. I agree with you in being a little surprised that Iowa was never really in the race for Poggi, though, as you'd think he would have at least given the Hawkeyes a shot.

I have a sneaky, yet unconfirmed suspicion that the Rhabdo incident (which his brother was involved) played a role in Iowa not getting any shot with him.
