I'm hearing that Theeeeee IOWA HAWKEYES will hold an OPEN practice/scrimmage at
West Des Moines, prior to end of Spring ball in 2013.

I think it's gonna happen and I think it is a terrific idea for Dallas county.

If they do then someone who is posting this sentence is going. That is much much closer to me than Iowa City

Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • Great idea! WDM Valley HS is in Polk County, not Dallas. Nice stadium. The Des Moines Menace play their home games there. Holds 8K.

Nile..........No worries........I'll have my people (Kirk Ferentz) call your people about your suggestion.

Is the Des Moines Menace the Arena Football League team, from Dallas county? This is an AMERICAN football thread.

****And the reason I brought up Dallas county is because on a recent trip to WDM it seemed like there was a serious
INFESTATION of ugly red & yellow license plates around that particular locale.

Not sure who would down vote this?! This is great. I think this will help Iowa lock down the borders a little more if they hold practices to show in-state kids the Hawkeye tradition. Besides, this is great for the Hawkeye community in Des Moines. +1 for whoever came up with this on the staff.

I'm not sure what my suggestion was. shrug Perhaps you can spare a moment and enlighten me? Otherwise, it sounds like the wheels of progress are already in motion.

I think we are in agreement that this would be a PR move for Iowa. My point about the Menace is Valley's stadium is arguably the Des Moines metro's best facility for hosting a football-related event outside of Drake's stadium, which isn't anywhere near as nice as much as it is bigger and can hold more people.

I upvoted it. I love the idea. It reminds me of the road shows MLB teams do in the off season around their area to drum up fan support.

I agree that it's a great idea. I think I heard Ohio State is having its spring game in Cincinnati, with the reason being the same things you mentioned - it rewards the fan base in that area and helps with recruiting.

My lips are sealed. Honest. I did not tell anyone about it. You must have.

  • I live a mile away on the same street. I will be there if they do, in fact, have one there. I would guess the stadium would be full too.

  • Golden......what the heck is that 3rd plane in your pics?
Where did you get those, at Oshkosh ?

    Just wonderin..........

  • Sky-

It is the B-1 Bomber with variable wing. Pics are from indoor/outdoor museum in South Dakota, about 10 miles east of Rapid City at entrance to Ellsworth Air Force Base (FREE). Went there last summer. Even my wife liked going there!

    B-1 info @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_B-1_Lancer

I need to update my pics. Went to National Air and Space Museum in DC with my boys over Thanksgiving. Best place ever for airplane fans! No admittance fee........just pay for parking ($15). Up close and personal with some of the greatest planes ever.....all inside. VERY impressive (my favorite is the SR-71 Blackbird) and is a "don't-miss" attraction, in addition to all the great national monuments of Washington, Lincoln, Tomb of the Unknown, Vietnam, Iwo Jima, WWII, Jefferson, National Cathedral, White House, Congress, Mt. Vernon, etc., etc.. Nearby NRA center worth the trip also. FREE!

    See: http://airandspace.si.edu/udvarhazy/

If there is only one vacation trip you take your family on, it should be to Washington, DC.
I think it will deepen their understanding and appreciation of all America has done and is.

My older brother and I built lots of military models (Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard) when we were kids in the late-50's and early 60's. Don't know if kids even do that anymore, with all the other things to do. I think it led to our appreciation and love of the same, as well as us both enlisting in the Army. (Our dad serving in WWII and the reserve was also a factor, no doubt.)

Golden, I went to the SAC museum in Omaha when I was probably 14. Saw a bunch of planes, but the only one I distinctly remember was the SR-71. It was a lot smaller than I thought it would be, but very very cool plane.

  • Golden.....thanks for the information on these great flyers.
We have a few things in common, my friend. My Dad also served the greatest country ever in
WWII. Might have to have a visit about such things, over a tall frosty one at Mondo's.
If not before, then, perhaps after the Hawkeyes take down Wisconsin, this fall at Kinnick.
