Starting 5

  • I think it's time for Fran to make some changes in the starting lineup.

I know Woodbury was a big recruit for us but maybe he was a bit overrated? Purdue's starting Freshman center is pretty good at times. Woodbury looks lost most of the time.

Olesani IMO is playing better right now, which isn't much better. Both need a lot of development.

I also don't see Oglesby improving.

It's mind- boggling how Iowa shoots so well with free throws all game, then when it comes down to the end and they really count, we miss them.

This loss hurt. Iowa's shooting seems to be getting worse as the season goes on. This loss may have just made us NIT bound.

  • Woodbury's presence under the hoop on defense, his outlet passing for a transition offense and his presence under the hoop on the offensive end for rebounds makes him start.

He definitely needs to add some weight, but being a freshman center in this league is no picnic. I think saying he looks lost is a huge stretch. He knows the game very well.

I also think people put way too much emphasis on the starting 5, with how much Fran rotates and the minute distribution of everyone. It really doesn't matter who starts. You adjust and adapt depending on how the game is going.

I agree with this 100%. In basketball, starters don't matter as much for a team like Iowa. Who plays the most minutes is what matters. I think both Basabe and Fran are very comfortable with him coming off the bench. And while I would agree that Olesani has really improved, I'm not sure if I would want him starting the game. He struggled much more than Woodbury did early against the better teams in the conference with good post players (IU-Zeller, MSU-Nix and Payne). Olesani barely played in either of those, and Woodbury did good IMO against Zeller and Nix. To be honest, I don't care who starts at the 5, but I honestly think that the presence of a true center, such as Woodbury, has really helped Iowa on defense and on the boards. I still think the reason Basabe struggled so much last year is because he was the main guy inside. His freshman year had Cole, who was fairly good and very sound on both ends of the floor for being so undersized. Woodbury will come along, and he is about where I expected him for a freshman center.

And just to add to this, there is a mental part of the game and every good coach knows how to treat their players individually and I think Fran has proven he can do that. You treat them all differently depending on how they react to coaching.

Some you yell at, some you don't. Coming off of the bench is just the better move for some players and Vice-Versa.

  • Personally, I prefer Clemmons to come off the bench. If there is one player that can sit the bench, see how the game is going, and take the adjustments into the game, it's him. He got a whopping 11 minutes starting for us. Let May start the games...Clemmons can finish.

I've said it since Woodbury was in high school...he does not play like hes 7'1, but more like hes 6'7. I was thrilled seeing him throw the elbow at Carroll. Finally some manhood. I just wish he would take the ball to the basket with some authority, and play more above the rim. Don't want to sit'em though, I prefer Basabe off the bench for a jolt of athleticism and energy.

Ogelsby? If he can't hit the 3, why is he put into the game? Its to the point, he passed on his shot. Boy ain't on the floor to pass the ball.

And finally...who kicked Aaron White's dog? He played earlier this year like he had a chip on his shoulder, and now hes a puss. When he got fouled in OT and us down 2, I knew we was done. Could see it in his eyes.

  • I agree that Basabe plays well coming off the bench.

I watched "The Journey" tonight on BTN. Great tribute to Chris Street.
It would be great if this Iowa team could play that inspired every game just as they did against Wisconsin.

I really do think Iowa is better than Purdue and how they looked today.

    Iowa's shooting has regressed.

Just think about the respect and trust Basabe has for McCaffery. He followed FM to Iowa without ever visiting and then went to the bench last year while struggling after a great freshman year, for as much as Mel can disappear, you gotta love how hard he works and how much he's given to the program. He's one guy that will show up when the team needs a big play.

Agree here. Who starts simply is not all that relevant in Fran's system. It's about reading the flow of the game and managing mis-matches, and adjusting accordingly it terms of individual playing time. Fran seems to do that pretty well.

I felt all along that many fans had unrealistic expectations in regards to Woodbury. He didn't strike me as someone who would come in and be an immediate impact player. He does have some good basketball instincts, but desperately needs to learn that he can't simply turn around and flip the ball as he did in high school. This time for him is invaluable in terms of his development, and I can see him being a solid player down the road.

Oglesby has really fallen off. Hope he can get it going because we need him moving forward. He needs to have a heart-to-heart with Gatens, who looked similar at this stage, to learn the little things that make huge differences on the court.

This. Kid look disinterested in the first half. Talk about benching someone, I say he should be the first to go. Kid needs to be a leader. He's been playing sluggish lately.

  • I don't know who should be sitting, but Basabe should be starting. I guess it could be any of White, Woodbury or Clemmons depending on the opponent.

And, Fran, please stop the Oglesby experiment. Other than an anamoly at NW, he simply is hurting Iowa in every facet, not helping. He needs to get moved far down the rotation. He has had long enough to shoot himself out of his slump. It's not going to happen. NW was simply a tease.

Something i have noticed about Ogelsby is that he can only shoot lights out when its a game that the outcome is already decided. The main games that stand out to me are NW this year and does anyone remember how good he looked in our blowout loss to Indiana last year?

  • I would like to see Ingram get some of Oglesbys minutes. He wasn't redshirted so they might as well give him a few minutes here and there.

  • I'd like to see someone other than 2-11 from the floor in consecutive Big Ten games, Marble have the ball for the last shot.

Come on, Fran. Run a play for a winner on that set.

  • I understand that Woodbury needs time to develop and it's smart to leave the guy in and let him play to improve. It is frustrating watching a guy 7'1" play as small as he does. No way should he be getting his shots blocked like he does. He is tall enough where he should be able to post up, make a move, and take it up strong. The baby hook may have worked in Iowa high school basketball, but it's not consistently working against D-1 talent. Hopefully Woodbury also develops an outside shot. He was left wide open in the 15 to 18 foot range yesterday and he did not even look to take a shot.

Overall the shooting has regressed tremendously. Imagine if Iowa could shoot in the upper 30% or low 40% shooting. They would have won many other close games.
They have hung in to barely lose games shooting very poorly. One could only imagine if they had made freethrows when they counted at the end, they would have won.

I agree with the comments about Oglesby. His confidence is lost after a few misses.

Boy this team misses a player such as Gatens.

  • Yeah, Fran seems to be all in with Josh. Shooters all have their slumps and usually come out of them, but he's just not doing it. I do think he's underrated as a passer, though.

  • I really thought this game would go a long way in determining how Iowa finishes the season. With this loss, I think that they finish under .500 in the league. If Iowa could have pulled it out, I think they had a chance to finish really strong, maybe 2 losses the rest of the way. Now I think they will lose at MN, WI, IN, and maybe NE. (NE we shouldn't but will) and at home against MN or NW or both. Iowa just doesnt shoot the ball good enough to win on the road in the B1G. I really like watching this team play, but they don't have the complete "leader" to win on the road and against the tough teams.

  • Rumors are starting to fly that Basabe will get the start on Thursday night. Apparently Fran said on his radio show that Basabe has "earned the right." I'm interested to see if that means they will go big with White as the 3 and keep Woody in the lineup or if they will go small with Basabe as the 5 and keep Clemmons in the lineup.

Interesting. I have full trust that Fran knows what he's doing, so I'm not all that worried.

  • It may not matter to us who starts, but trust me, it matters to the players. I think Mel should start.

I like Adam, but his stats don't support the claim that he's good on defense or offense.... certainly not a huge shot blocker (13 all season), way below some of his other teammates.... and he's getting as many defensive rebounds as most of the othe big guys with White ahead of the pack..... Look at his FTA stat - he's not a threat under the opponents' basket and hardly ever gets fouled.... He commits too many fouls to compensate for his lack of speed.

He needs another couple of years before he can be effective in the league. And i certainly hope and expect him to develop in the coming years. just one last note: something they don't keep track of is how many times a guy is blocked. He must lead the league in that category. Too soft offensively for a guy of his size.
