Spring Practice Question

  • Quick question regarding spring practice dates.

Is there an advantage to having your spring day early, or later? I see that Iowa has a pretty late spring day. Is there any reason to this? It seems that spring practices are so random (for all teams), I just didn't know if there was a reason behind it. Thanks all. iowa

By spring day, I assume you mean the spring game/controlled scrimmage. If my assumption is incorrect, feel free to let me know.

I think the two main factors in planning spring practice are the weather and the academic calendar. Some teams in warmer climates have already begun spring practice, while most schools in colder climates wait until a little later so they can hopefully have better weather outside.

Also, some schools are on the quarter system, while others are on the semester system, so that can affect the schedule as well in terms of not wanting to interfere with final exams, as well as when spring break takes place.

Most schools use their last allotted practice to hold the spring game, but that's not required. Last year, I think Iowa had another practice or two following the spring game. Two factors at play there are the weather - as you'd like to have it outside so the fans can see it and you want it to simulate game conditions as much as possible - and the quality of play from your team. The later in spring practice that the spring game is held, the more time the players will have had to become comfortable with the system and build chemistry amongst each other.

  • The spring practice starts on March 27th I believe, but the Spring game is not until April 27th.

I think Chicago is correct. It'll be interesting to see how many scrimmages Iowa opens to the public this spring. Off the top of my head, there were one or two more open practices than usual back in August, so maybe the Hawkeyes will continue that trend this spring.

  • I've blocked out Saturday, April 27 for a trip to legendary Kinnick stadium.

    See you there, Chicago ?

I hope the weather cooperates and there's a big turnout this year.
