So, who are the 2012 "Nasties"??

  • Like many, I live away from Iowa and use the forum for info/discussion I wouldn't normally get (down here in Gator land).

My question for some of you "insiders" is who on this 2012 version of the Hawkeyes is the new Bob Sanders, Matt Roth, Bulaga, Angerer, etc.... You know, those players who displayed a certain mindset that gave the team that "edge of meanness".... something our teams seemed to be lacking the last two years, imo.

I remember KF commenting on Matt Roth's antics a few years ago: "I'm not sure what Matt would be doing if he didn't have football" (as if it was a scary thought!!)

Do we have any guys like this on the roster?? And who was your favorite whacko??

  • Nico Law seems to be well on his way to this status.

  • good morning starch and all.

i suppose many hawk fans will pick bob sanders as their meanie of meanies. actually, i might too. his play as an upperclassman helped get iowa national notice under kf. still, we shouldn't underestimate his earlier contributions. the hits and the energy he brought during his first year gave a pretty poor team hope and a much-needed scrap of pride--not to mention a few wins to build on.

i'd like to nominate pat dean as my meanie, though. he was an anchor on the d-line during coach fry's first rose bowl season. he wasn't a flashy player--as far as i could tell his job was to create a train wreck in the middle of the line. he seemed to relish the role of clogger. double team him, fine. more bodies meant a bigger mess. it is pretty hard to discount the historic importance of that team and for my money, pat dean epitomizes the whole gang.

  • Dominic Alvis I think will be the designated meanie on the DL for 2012.

Lowery or Law in the defensive backfield.

    BeatBigRed

  • Nico Law. and. BJ Lowery.

    kingiowa

  • I think law will being the big hits as he was lighting people up on special teams last year I also love the way Kirksey plays he isn't the biggest guy but he plays at top speed at all times would like to see more of it from Morris

This is a great post. I've always felt that a championship defense needs at least two guys like that, and I agree with you that Iowa definitely lacked that in 2011. Mike Daniels was the closest to being that guy, IMO, and Bernstine showed flashes of it. Neither one was anywhere near the level of a Bob Sanders though.

Nico Law would be an obvious candidate for someone to step into this role in 2012. If/when Dean Tsopanides can crack the lineup, I've heard he has a few screws loose (I mean that as a compliment), so he could bring a little extra edge as well up front.

  • I like Nico too. But I'll go with Morris. He's an upper classman now. I hope he's healthy and will play with a mean streak. On the O side, it's time for CJ to deliver the goods. Want to see him run people over like a freight train.

Agree with BBR, however, I think you'll see James Morris, BJ Lowery, Steve Bigach and C Kirksey also getting their share of Big
Hits from the 2012 Hawkeye Defensive side of things. flex

  • Those Ferentz kids are always pretty darn nasty; I will go with James. Nico Law...yup. One I would love to see break into this group is that lil' ol' tight end we have been waiting for to really come through!

  • Definitely James Ferentz, ya gotta love a kid that still going after people after his helmet gone.
For pure NASTY Nico Law appears to be the man. Gary Dolphin spoke highly of Brandon Scherff at the I-Club Spring tour even comparing him to Gallery.
