Ready for a Rant? Barta: Pay Attention

  • I see that the Clones have issued an apology from their student body, for the ill treatment of KU Coach, Bill Self, after the game on Monday night. Now that is a classy thing to do...I'll give them credit.

    Having attended the Purdue at Iowa game, I'm going to ask Athletic DIrector Gary Barta, or Pres Sally Mason to get some control of the wankers in the student section. Their 'super creative minds' came up with 'Bird you suck' as the main cheer on Thursday night. My Jr High flunkie friends, who never made it out of high school had more creativity and class than the UI student section showed on Thursday.

    Come on, man. Bird you suck?? That is pathetic for a college student to yell at a basketball game.
    Barta and Sally..........wtf?? Teach your underlings, or whatever they are some CLASS AND SPORTSMANSHIP.

    My understanding is that the apology was for the fan that tried to charge at Self, and for the racist comments on Twitter directed at the Kansas players. While I'm not crazy about what the Iowa students were chanting, I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as either of those two situations.

  • Just my opinion, but I think it's more disrespectful to spell Byrd's name wrong than to tell him he sucks.

  • I agree that the chant was lame, but I'm not sure what you expect Barta/Mason to do about it. Also, the ISU apology was regarding the fan arguing with self and the two idiots on Twitter which were much more egregious than some dumb chant.

  • I didn't participate in the Byrd chant. I think a lot of what Iowa students come up with is dumb and always has been. I'm sure Byrd has heard worse things said to him in everyday conversation though and probably wasn't phased by it.

    Pathetic on 2 fronts:

    1-Iowa's student section is a joke and until this year didnt exist. Still lacking any type of "environment" at Carver.
    2-We were coming off a loss to Nebraska. Not a good time to use the word suck.

    I expect Iowa's football student section to start lacking.

    Lame non-conference schedule+Boring system+3 Underachieving years= 1/3 full student section by 3rd quarter.

    Didn't he go off for three 3's shortly after the chant started and didn't do much before?

    You serious? They made racist remarks at KU players online, some people made almost death threat level remarks AND some one charged the coach and you're offended by a chant? really? The two situations are not even remotely similar. The cyclones should have to apologize. I think the DUI chant at Mbekwe (sp?) was worse then the chant at byrd and i dont have a problem with either.

    Wait......this is coming from a poster who calls other teams and players childish names, and mocks them???? A little hypocritical, don't you think?

    I remember when Scott Skiles got arrested for possession of cocaine. Iowa students brought baggies of white powder and dangled them when he shot FTs etc.

  • Iowa needs to take a lesson from MSU. The Izzone is well organized and creative without being crude. If students start messing up, section leaders report and they are booted from further attendance

    Too bad the Hawks Nest is pretty poorly ran. They never try to do anything that is unique. They print off these papers for the first like 10 rows, so nobody behind that gets involved. Iowa's media production (or whoever runs music/video board) really needs to be redone as well. The intro song/theme thing is boring. Last year was actually cool with Till I Collapse and then Power. They should make something tradition for when the team runs out and then during lineups. Its so lame with the instrumental beat turned all the way down. Oh, and the music before the games, yeah, that stuff sucks. Also, the band, just everything about the band. I don't need to hear the 3 or 4 same songs on repeat during EVERY time out. There's so many things wrong with Carver, that even a good student section wouldn't fix. Its just not the environment that should be set up for a rowdy crowd.

    With the program struggling as it has for awhile now, I doubt those things have been focused on too much. Hopefully, as the on-court product continues to improve, they'll see to it that the entire atmosphere improves along with it.

    No one is saying that they thought the chant was great. What they're saying is that there's no comparison between the chant aimed at Byrd and the things that Iowa State apologized for.

    Haven't been to a bball game at Carver in years, but this is something I've complained about with wrestling all year. The music before a meet is just pathetic and not conducive to excitement.

    One other thing that I don't like (and there are lots of those) is they spent all this money on the new video boards and everything, which are great, but is it really necessary that all 6 of the older type of video boards play ads all the time? Maybe put something on there about the players, like their stats or something. Or maybe just do it on two of them, so that way they can still sell ads. It would be nice to see some small improvements on stuff like this to show us fans that they do care about our experience.

    University of Iowa students.

    The CLown fans weren't screaming their derogatory stuff at the top of their lungs for all to hear.
    As to whether the Iowa fans singling out Bird (Larry or whomever) is
    also racist, is left for another discussion thread.

    And again.......I attended the game at CHA. I didn't and would not waste my time at Hilton.
    The student section at Iowa needs to step-it-up in the creativity and class department.
    That's all I'm saying, Todd.
