Question for everyone on here... advice

  • I know this should probably be in the off-topic forum, but I don't venture over there much and I figure most people read this forum so I'm going to get advice here.

I'm going to propose to my girlfriend in the next few weeks and would like any ideas or advice on doing it.

    cool

    cool

First and foremost, be sure that its something that shes not going to get mad at you for. I had grand plans when I proposed and at the last minute had to abort when I found out thru my pipeline that she would've been embarrassed and would've declined. We were out of town with another couple, and I thought it would be OK since no one would know her to "announce" my proposal. I couldn't have been more wrong. Luckily I had it stopped. In the end, it was more special for her, alone in front of a fireplace.

Now if you are confident that shes good about a public showing of her proposal. I suggest its done involving whatever activity she enjoys. Making it more comfortable for her. Shes the one that will make or break the announcement, so put it in her "wheel house" to say yes. Involve her friends or family? That could make it more special.

As for specifics? Well I've seen it done at a baseball game...you know the proposal on the big screen, and it worked the one time I seen it done. Put it on a local billboard? Seen that done twice. It was 1 for 2...lol. Hot air balloon ride? Airplane banner? Romantic get away, just the two of you, where you have everything planned out...I know my wife appreciated that one. The key is to make it all about her.

    Best of Luck

  • Thanks! I'm thinking of a romantic getaway for the weekend, then just pop the question when the time seems right.
A public announcement would not go over well with her.
We've discussed it in the past and she's hinted recently, so I know I will get a "yes". Lol

I've seen it not work out at a baseball game before. How embarrassing for that guy.

  • Good luck and congratulations, u2.

I don't have any specific advice but I will share the line a friend of mine used while dancing with his girlfriend: "So, you want to be my old lady or what?"

And, yes, they are still married after, I believe, about 20 years.

  • Your idea about the romantic weekend is solid, I think.
The more romantic you can make it, for your Lady, the better, imho.

    Congrats and good luck, U2hawk.

Hopefully, she is a great Hawkeye fan, like you !

She's a Texas Longhorn fan. Lol

She has 2 uncles who played at UT and another who is a UT alumni and is in the House of Representatives. Their family is Texas Longhorns all the way. fingergun

She does have Iowa Hawkeye shirts that she wears once in a while and has been to a few Houston game watch Saturdays with me. I've been trying to convert her into a Hawkeye fan. She's a city girl so last summer's trip to Iowa City was a complete culture shock.

  • Congrats to you and your up coming fiancee!!! Hope you enjopy many, many years of good times and raise a bunch of HAWK fans!!! Whatever you decide to do to make this a memorable occasion I am sure will be totally appropriate as you seem to understand what she likes and doesn't - VERY important as you go through life to remember that!! biggrin

  • My only suggestion is deciding where you will go after the proposal is just as important. Have a plan in place just in case. I had reservations at one of her favorite restaurants. The proposal usually is over quickly, but what follows is also what they remember.

  • Make it romantic. Suggestions - the beach in Galveston (but not South Padre - too crowded with drunken college kids this time of year), the River Walk in San Antonio, New Orleans. In New Orleans, there is a nice B&B on Esplanade called the LeMothe House.

Then before you annouce, talk to her father (as long as she has a good relationship with him). Chicks dig the whole "getting my father's permission" bit.

  • The idea of a romantic weekend sounds like a perfect setup for the proposal line, "God Dear, I have really loved the time we've been together this weekend. It should never end. Wait, maybe it should not ever end....Will you marry me." The recommendation to have a follow up activity after she accepts is a wonderful idea too. It will cement the positive vibes that the entire weekend is dedicated to producing.

Congratulations and Good Luck. There are cynics out there that will bad mouth marriage and cite divorce statistics. But the simple facts are, Life is better with a well match companion. I am a two time looser, who would remarry in a minute if I met the right Mrs. again.

  • I just did it in November. Our situation is a little different, I am almost 40 and Jenn isn't too far behind, so we had talked about it previously. Also, I didn't want to get a ring that she wouldn't like or a ring that she was iffy about, I wanted to nail the ring, so I gathered her input. Being pretty sharp, she put 2 & 2 together. So it became almost a game. Every day would bring questions and assumptions based upon whatever our plans were. So the only was to "surprise" her was to wake her up. So I slid it on her finger while she was sleeping and woke her up to breakfast in bed on a Saturday morning. Then we watched our schools, Iowa and Oklahoma State play ball. Iowa lost, the Pokes won. Oh well. Good luck, congrats!!

  • Well if you want to go full blown redneck like I. Me and my brother used to promote Demo Derbys, and the wife loves them and helped us taking the money etc. Well I had a plaque made that said " Will you marry me" On it and I go look hey honey look at the Plaques we had made.( Oh I forgot I intentionally started a fight with her early in the day so she would have no clue) Anyway so I give her the plaque down on one knee blah, blah at a Demolition Derby she cried about 0 minutes before finally saying yes. Take that for a Redneck proposal boyz.... But it was something we both enjoyed doing together and she loved every minute of it. So my advice do it during or wit something she enjoys.

  • I go pick up the ring in about 3 weeks. I made the trip to the jewelry store yesterday, ordered and paid. I also have to go talk to her father during that time. pray

  • congrats...one thought came to mind. ive been married for 8 years now and I am still surprised how many times my wife still tells the story of how we got engaged. its more than just a detail in your story together...for many its a story in itself. i would work to make it a memorable story to tell. good luck!

  • Congrats U2. I haven't been there yet, so I don't know what to tell you. I guess, whatever you do, just be confident in it. You're confident in your decision, so be confident in the way you propose and it'll be a good way.
