    I know what you are saying FG and I am not really trying to stick up for him maybe I shouldn't have said a lot. But he coaches mediocre players into NFL players and has had success. I think his main issues are he is too old school,too conservative and loyal to a horrible fault. Like I said I think he just needs to coach,find diamonds in the rough,turn kids into pros but leave the coordinators to take care of the play calling and bring us into what college football has turned into. We are not going to get many athletic quarterbacks and fast and talented wide outs with the dull offense we run. We will continue to get decent d players,lineman tight ends and running backs but that is all unless something changes. I could complain about getting rid of him but it is not going to happen so I don't think it is worth talking about.

    This is no disrespect to Vandenberg because he did play better today than in previous weeks.

    My whole thing with the game today is we were down 32 points with 5 mins left in the 3rd QTR still running the running the ball play regular tempo offense. Than we punted the ball on a 4th down and 8 at the 50 yard line........... To me that says we aren't playing to win anymore, which I'm ok with. Ok we aren't going to win but screw stradegy & keeping it close. In fact screw conventional wisdom all together.

    Pull every senior out and put every back up in. Do it just to do it.

    ****disclaimer - Iowa tried at the very to end to go for it on 4th downs and onside kicks but if we were really trying to make a come back it was 10 minutes too late (game time)

    You're correct. Nobody knows who will start next season. That's a very good point.

    I do know the depth chart says Rudock is no.2 for this season. If a coach gives some of the backups at any positions some playing time when getting blown out as in a few games including today, it will help avoid seeing a scared, deer-in-headlights under center if Vandenberg gets hurt sometime. That goes for any other position.

  • My theory that Ive stated as to why no Rudock in mop up duty is because KF is worried Jake would show something and possibly start a controversy with the team, fans and media. Couple posters seem to think that this is crazy. My question to those posters is what is the reasoning then?

    1) Rudock is injured.
    2) Rudock has informed the staff he plans to transfer after the season.
    3) Doesnt want to rattle Rudock my playing him too soon.
    4) Rudock is actually 4th so any snaps would be useless as he will never play and pry be our short punter in the future.
    5) JVB needs all the snaps he can get even risking injury in a blowout.
    6) Rudock sucks. Even tho he was good enough to move Derby to D and allow 2 other qbs to redshirt

    Ok maybe Im beating a dead horse here but what else Iowa Football is there to take from this game. Some of these are a reach but the answer I keep coming back to is KF is worried that Rudock throws a couple of nice balls and maybe a garbage TD. Then KF has to answer the question is post game if JVB is gonna start next week. KF comes from the Belichick camp of hating the media. He fails to realize that the media provides millions of dollars of free publicity for his product. Les Miles gets it.

    Rudock may not be the starter next season. I don't think most posters are assuming that, but, he was the potential next man in yesterday, and so that's primarily why his name is being mentioned in the context of giving backups some experience in blow-outs. Rudock came in with some fanfare, so understandably fans focus on him. Personally, I find it interesting that the major programs in his back yard didn't pursue him hard, so you have to wonder if he really is as talented as advertised.

    As for next season, I imagine the QB competition will be the most intriguing storyline during the spring and summer, assuming we don't have some major coaching changes again (which I doubt). From what I have heard, it's wide open at this point.

    Miami did recruit him hard! FSU was/is set, and Florida likes some other sort of talent.

    i really believe Sokol is the next QB for 2 years. hope he can read and adjust to a blitz better than jv.

    I realize a lot of people disagree with this, but I think Vandenberg has played much better than a lot of people have given him credit for. I'm not at all saying he's the next Dan Marino, but he's nowhere near this team's biggest problem, and I do think it's perfectly reasonable that he's a much better option than any other quarterback on the roster this season. Also, I can understand how Ferentz may be reluctant in certain situations to play a backup, because that may indicate he's given up on that game. If Iowa had the entire second team offense in the game, but Vandenberg was still in there, then I could better understand the gripe. But as long as the starters are in there, I don't have a problem with keeping Vandenberg in.

    Good post. Iowa's biggest problem is the d-line. Take away a few games and this d-line has looked absent this season. Yesterday, Michigan's QB had nearly 10 seconds to sit back and look for an open receiver before he either had to finally scramble or throw it.
    They haven't been able to establish a pass rush or run defense for almost the whole season.

    D-line is Iowa's biggest issue IMO.

  • This comment does not really follow the initial question, but is a thought about a statement made in one of the responses. I tire of hearing how many players Ferentz sends to the NFL. I would much rather read about the Hawks placing many on the All Big 10 teams. This means that players are being developed to be excellent college players instead if a couple All BIGs who go to the pros.
