Predictions for Iowa's 2012-13 basketball season

  • 1) What will Iowa's record be at the conclusion of the nonconference portion of the schedule?

    2) What will Iowa's record be in conference play?

    3) Will Iowa make the NCAA Tournament, the NIT, or neither?

Interested to hear your thoughts for all three.

  • I'll go ahead and get things started.

    1) 11-2

    2) 9-9

    3) I think Iowa will enter the conference tourney needing to make it to the finals in order to qualify for the Big Dance, and fall short. However, Iowa earns one of the top seeds in the NIT, makes it to New York City, and builds a ton of momentum heading into the 2013-14 season.

  • Call me Mr. Optimistic, here's my prediction:
    1) 13-0
    2) 13-5
    3) 26-5, at least a sweet 16.

    LaoHawk

  • Hope Lao is right. And as Todd stated, I would like to see my Hawks play in NYC. But of course would prefer NCAA.

    Back to reality:
    9-4
    8-10
    2-1 (Big 10 tourney)

    19-15 and NIT again.

    NYCHawkeye

  • I'm concerned about this team's ability to pick up the scoring after Gattens departure, but sill I see continued improvement.
    Agree with NYC in non-con = 9-4
    Big Ten = 11-7
    Overall = 21-11
Knocked out in the second round of the Big Ten tourney

on the bubble but because of the strength of the Big Ten Iowa is back in the dance!

  • 1.) 11-2. I think we take the Cancun Challenge. Somewhere between @ Va Tech, vs ISU and vs UNI we go 1-2. If we take a loss in any other game, outside of those 3, it would be a disgrace.

2.) 10-8...if we start conference play at 2-4. Gonna be very tough to finish above .500 otherwise. Remember, its a young team, and other teams will be gunning for US late in the year.

So at 21-10, with our pathetic OOC schedule, I think we need to win at least 2 games in the tourney to be on that bubble for the NCAA. But honestly, like Todd, I think its the NIT.

Now say that this team goes 13-0 and starts conference play ranked, I think it would actually help them, confidence wise, in conference play. Might just surprise ole Indiana that first game on New Year's Eve. Now that would be a hoot! Lose to them in football, but then beat them in basketball.

  • 10-3
    9-9
I think they win a BTT game.
    20-13 NIT.

22-9 Regular season will have them solidly on the bubble if not already in. The B1G is that good that a 22 win B1G team will be in the tourney regardless of if they have a crappy OOC schedule.

1 win in the BTT and at least a 2nd round NCAA appearance.

Maybe a little optimistic, but I think this team will be good enough to make the tournament.

As for the scoring after Gatens, honestly, I think this team won't have any trouble picking up his scoring. White and Marble are two legitimate 20 a night players. Gesell is a better PG already than we had last year. Our defense will be improved as well and our depth is leaps and bounds better.

I think we will really enjoy watching this team. There will be a few struggles due to youth, but overall I look for a very successful year.

Another optimistic fella, eh? Well, how about this guy from the Gazette, his name is Mike Miller in the comments section. I swear this is not me, but we seem to think alike: hoops

  • Hawks have some erratic games against some good B1G competition, but still able to come back with surprise the next game. Fans begin tailgating in large numbers hours before games, with shirts off and shorts and sandals on in sub-zero weather. Sellout string begins.

    Non-conference @ 11-2
    Conference @ 9-9

Squeak out Big Dance shot with one win in the conference championship round.

  • interestingly, there's not a lot of variation in this thread. nothing novel about my thoughts.

    1. non-conference: 9-4
    2. b10: 9-9.
    3. b10 tnmnt: 1 win

most likely just short of an ncaa bid. we'll all be able to see that the team is much improved, but.....

I just don't see 4 losses with that schedule.

    Non-conf........11-2

    Go with 10-8 there, too.

    2 wins in BTT

Yes, 11 seed in NCAA tournament, March 2013

you might be right--sure hope you are. i'm afraid that even poised youngsters can go south a few times. i'm generally optimistic. i just think the guys will be a bit more erratic than the level of skill suggests.

  • IA got some love from ESPN predictor: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/preview2012/story/_/id/8604513/expert-predictions-new-season

Myron Medcalf: Last year in the Big Ten, it was Indiana. This year, it's Iowa. Fran McCaffery's program will win 10 Big Ten games, advance to the title game in the league tourney and secure a slot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2006. McCaffery has serious weapons in Iowa City. Freshman Adam Woodbury, Aaron White and Melsahn Basabe comprise one of the most underrated frontcourts in the country. The Hawkeyes are coming, folks.

here's a twist. as i said otherwise, i'm afraid the hawks will fall just short of an ncaa bid. however, i also think that if they do get in, they'll be pegged better than 11. if iowa comes out of its b10 schedule as a legit ncaa team, i think they'd be a 7 or 8 seed with a decent shot at winning 2 games.

  • 11-2 non conference. 10-8 in B1G play. I don't see any 10 win B1G teams being left out this year and Iowa goes dancing as a 9 seed. Win one game and Hawkeye basketball is BACK hoops

  • 12-1 NC
    9-9 B1G
    1-1 in B1G Tournament
8-9 seed in the NCAA. The B1G is that tough this year.

  • Good job Todd, Ohio, KC, Golden, Sky and Fish -- all at 11-2.

We have a lot of work to do with conference play a week away, and a brutal start.

Let's Go Hawks! NCAA all the way!

(Todd, thanks for digging this up.)

  • In my defense, I didn't think WSU and VT were that better than IA early on... I still have the BTN conference for redemption at 13-5 and sweet 16, Go Hawks!

How about the first four BTN games prediction? I say at least 3-1.

Honestly, I think 1-3 is pretty realistic, and that'd be fine. Even 0-4 wouldn't be that big of a deal. There are a lot more wins to be had in the second half of the conference schedule. As long as Iowa's healthy, I think the Hawkeyes could be poised for a strong finish no matter how conference play starts.

The second half of the conference schedule is more doable; however, an excellent start will greatly dictate a stronger finish. Either way, IA will be dancing barring no major injuries to main players.

Wow, do I hope you're right, Lao. And there's an outside chance that it could happen.

However, the BigTen conference is the toughest in America, this year. (Take that ACC, SEC & Big 8).

Getting to 9 wins, 9-9 in the BigTen this year, will provide a sufficient SOS to get the Hawkeyes into the
    Big Dance.

It would be fun though, to see them go on another Iowa Hawkeye run the the BT tournament, ala,
Reggie Evans, Brody Boyd, Jeff Horner, Greg Brunner, etc.
