Pre Season Analysis - Wide Reciever/Tight End

  • Projected Depth Chart

    WR -
    7 Marvin McNutt | 6-4, 215, Sr., 2V
    83 Steven Staggs | 6-3, 195, Jr., SQ

    WR -
    6 Keenan Davis | 6-3, 215, Jr., 2V
    11 K. Martin-Manley | 6-0, 205, Fr., RS

    TE -
    39 Brad Herman | 6-5, 255, Sr., 3V
    86 C.J. Fiedorowicz | 6-7, 265, So., 1V
    85 Zach Derby | 6-3, 240, Jr., SQ

    What I expect this year?

McNutt - Obviously our best WR and will likely be JVB's go to guy. The two hooked up twice for TD's in the 2009 fOSU game. McNutt is a tall reciever with average speed and great hands. He will have a great season especailly if we have another reciever or two that steps up and takes some attention off him. IMO McNutt's biggest strength is his red zone presence. He can jump and catch almost anything thrown his way. I look for around 70 receptions and 900 yards and 9 TD's (Which will break the TD career record)

Davis - Really looking for Keenan to finally live up to the hype he was shown after high school. He is a very similar reciever to McNutt and has very good hands. His biggest area for improvment is getting open and being a big target for the QB. He needs to create separation with the DB in his Hook and Slant Routes. If he can run better routes this year he will have a good season and hopefully be All BIG next season.

KMM - We could really use a guy to step up and be a good 3rd guy. The more talent we have at reciever the less McNutt can get double teams. I look for KMM to be that guy and have a good start to his Hawkeye career.

Herman - A average recieving Tight End with above average Blocking. I look for him to make a big impact helping our already stellar Offensive Line open up holes for Coker and co. He doesnt have the best speed but has good hands and will be a security blanket for JVB.

CJ - This year CJ will have a breakout year IMO. He is big, strong, fast and have really good hands. He will be our biggest recieving threat out of the tight-end position and will likely be split out every once in a while as well. If his blocking has improved he will be one of the best Tight Ends to come through Iowa since Clark.

    Surprises -

A name I look to surprise us this year at WR is Jacob Hillyer. I think he could help out our WR corps and do a good job even though he's only a True Freshman.

A surprise (not really) that could emerge at TE is Ray Hamilton. A highly recruited tight end out of High School might be a guy that could come in if needed to provide depth at the TE position. Will a year or two under KF and staff he a CJ will be a deadly duo for Big Ten linebackers to guard and I'm very excited for that time to come.

Iowa could really benifit from a guy that has the speed and hands to be a legit down field threat. I think the majority of our recievers are guys who are good on shorter routes and in the red zone. If we could get a guy that can run vertically and catch opposing safties on their heels would benifit us greatly.

    Again all feedback is encouraged.

Great stuff here once again DK! The good news is that there are several talented guys that seem to be fighting for that #3 WR spot. In general, competition should bring out the best in all of them. Looking forward to seeing who steps up on Saturdays.

  • I think Davis will have a big year. I would imagine Vandenberg has thrown to and has more chemistry more with Davis over McNutt. Being backups for the last couple years together.

You make a really good point there. Since the 2nd unit will often take most of their reps together, this is often the case. That'll be something to watch for.
