  • For comparison, here is what the top performers in this years combine ran. Tavon Austin ran nearly the same thing.

Now he just has to figure out a way to stick out in a crowded position group. I know he has the potential, but Sean Draper, Kevin Buford, Jordan Lomax, Greg Mabin and this years freshman class is going to make it hard for some to get a lot of playing time.

Mabin is a receiver, but you're right about the other guys - lots of talent at corner for Iowa right now, and all of those guys now have more experience than Fleming does.

With that said, Reese has an outstanding work ethic, and he should have all of his athleticism back from before his injury at this point, so I'm sure he'll have a lot to say about who starts and cracks the rotation this fall.

I stand corrected - hadn't seen that. Thanks for pointing that out. It'll be interesting to see which position he plays. I would assume free safety.

Whose to say that Flemming hasn't been moved back to WR? Spring ball is going to be very interesting.

Even with Lile in the mix? I would almost assume it's more to do with Gair not performing up to expectations...granted you don't hear a ton about any of the freshman.

Yep, Der pointed that out on the website. Strange move, IMO, since he was recruited as a corner, and it was a mutual decision to move him back to defense during the season. Why go back to offense now? I think he'll have a heck of a career at Iowa, but I think he's got a higher ceiling on defense, and that's exactly what Iowa sold him on back when he committed.

  • Marc Morehouse made a comment about Lile a couple weeks ago on the On Iowa podcast that there "may" be something going on with Lile. He said it could be something or could be nothing. Take that for what its worth.

Could have something to do with Gair, but it could also be a case of just trying to add as much talent and depth to that position as possible, as Iowa really underperformed at that spot in 2012. Lots of questions that will begin to be answered this spring.

It might be because hes got the speed and explosiveness GD wants at wideout.

But wouldn't he have had that this past fall when he was playing receiver for 2+ months?

Excited to see Reese make some plays for the Hawkeyes in 2013.
He's quite an intriguing football player, who helped recruit several guys, last year.
    Certainly, I'm rooting for Reese

Maybe, maybe not. Like you, I think he could be very special at DB. Its more natural to him. He maybe pretty raw at WR. Hence the RS. Mabin switching to DB? Don't know...have to go back and see if there is any on tape of him playing there. But what I like is that hes 6'2.

Hope not, I am very excited about his potential, hopefully the injury isnt worse than thought

  • One note is that I don't remember for sure whether or not Maurice ever had his position switched to DB (online) last year, I thought he did, but I'm not sure. I would think considering they made it a point to switch Mabin to DB and Meier to DE, they would also move him as well, but on that same note, both of those guys also had notes attached to their profiles stating that they were being moved. I would think it's safe to say none of us REALLY know what position he's playing right now...

Good point, as the online roster isn't always completely up to date. I honestly don't remember whether or not they changed it from WR to DB during the season.

  • My guess is that the coaches don't completely know as of yet. One thing is for sure, this team needs an infusion of speed and athleticism, and getting Fleming on the field has to be a priority. Hopefully, they are looking hard at him on punt and KR as well.

If he ends up on the offensive side of the ball, I could see him in a role similar to what the Packers do with Randall Cobb, whom I see as a similar athlete. Either way, I'll be rooting for him. Really liked him coming out.
