Gold medals aren't really made of gold. They're made of sweat, determination, and a hard-to-find alloy called guts.

  • Pierschbacher is a must get in-state recruit. If the coaches let him get away then that is a HUGE loss.

  • Did the Michigan coaches seriously tell him that they were going to be behind on numbers on the OL when they get to his class? They got 4 OLs in the '12 class and have 5 OL commits already in the '13 class. They may be behind on numbers at other positions, but offensive line certainly isn't one of them. I hope he's not buying that.

The rationale is that the previous coaching staff left them severely short-handed. From what they told Ross, there were only about 7 scholarship offensive linemen on campus when the new staff arrived. They have a target number that they want to get to, and despite the 2012 and 2013 hauls, they still aren't quite there.

I guess it's all relative. If Michigan is selling that, I think the Hawkeyes should sell him on our wonderful beaches and warm winters, it will be just as honest, relatively speaking.

lol The nature of recruiting is to sell your school as strongly as possible. It's up to other schools to point out any flaws in what they're telling him.

    Post of the day!

Well if they are showing numbers lets show some numbers as well. How many tackles will we have on roster next year vs how many they will have. KF has personally sent tackles Buluga, Gallery, Reiff in the first round. How many has Hoke sent?

15 National Championships and one Urban Meyer heart attack, Roll Tide. 23 NC's in wrestling and one badass Herky, Go Hawks.

That is just in this century...back in the 80's when he was the OL coach under Hayden Fry...he sent 11 OL to the NFL from '81 to '89...including three 1st rounders in OG Ron Hallstrom, OG/OT Mike Haight and legendary OT John Alt.

That's 11 as OL coach in the 80's...13 OL since 2003 as HC and if Zuse makes it....25 total OL sent into the NFL (yes I am not counting the former DL who are trying to make it as OL...its just too much....LOL), 6 in the first round.

No doubt - Ferentz has an outstanding track record of producing NFL offensive linemen.

I guess the kid will hear all kinds of things during his recruitment time. Iowa State will probably tell him that he can play right away and that the Cyclones are on the verge of something great. Yeah right! Nebraska will tell him the same thing but at least it's partially true. He won't play right away at Nebraska but the Huskers are about to have a break out season and they have lots of young talent all over the field. I think the kid ends up at Iowa. Kinda' hard to not be a Hawkeye when you live so close to Iowa City. I'd be very surprised if he went anywhere else.

You bring up an interesting point in that recruiting is so much about selling your side of the story. Every coach is going to do his best to put his school in the best light possible, so they'll spin everything accordingly. Each recruit is being pulled in dozens of different directions, and it's up to him to determine which one he wants to go in.

I agree. That's why I like it very much when parents and/or coaches take visits to schools with the player being recruited. College coaches will promise the stars and the moon to a kid to get him to commit. There are some very honest coaches out there, Ferentz being one of them, who speak from the heart and show the kid the depth chart and give the kid an honest opinion as to where he will be on that chart and when. Recruits would rather a coach be honest with them than to promise everything only to find out they were lied to. Ferentz reminds me a lot of Tom Osborne in that he's a quiet unassuming honest gentleman. I respect him a lot.

I'm not at all saying Ferentz isn't honest. But I don't think there are too many coaches out there that are intentionally dishonest to recruits. They'll definitely spin things to make their program look as good as possible, and the Iowa coaches do that as well. I don't have a problem with that, as that's the nature of recruiting. It's up to the recruit to make the best decision for himself. It can be very confusing and stressful for a high school kid, but at the end of the day, it's a great problem to have when multiple BCS schools are throwing themselves at you to give you a free education and an opportunity to play big-time football.

I kind of see it as being similar to shopping for a car. Clearly, a car salesman knows that there may be some negatives to a certain car, or that another car made by another company may better fit the customer. But he's still going to do everything he can to sell the customer that car.
