I'm going to the MN duel now, so they better not struggle. Please let the squad know.

Also, I don't really think it's fair to predict how they'll do at B10's/Nationals (nationals more so), simply because the main guys haven't been in a freaking tournament all year! At least with the B10's they'll have wrestled the same guys, so thats not a bad gauge, but going to an event like Midlands or any tournament would kind of let me at least know where they stand and what they can do a little bit more.

Stop making sense I don't like it..#jerkface flex

To an unranked wrestler, wtf is wrong with him, he has all the tools to be very good, I dont get it. No way we finish even top 3 with performances like that.

does this open the door for grant to come back?

I don't know, I would not put it past the coaches to do it, just for a statement to Lofthouse as an eye opener. But those 2 are the same wrestler to me, all the talent in the world with speed and strength but under achieve all the time. I don't get them, but I guess Backes is their coach and I think next to tshirt was one of the biggest underachievers in my memory.

Catholic school - kinda like Heelan. They recruit wherever they can steal - er - i mean recruit the better athletes without regards to religion or faith.

they also have the Valencia brothers - HS SOs - both state champs last year as FR, and should do the same this year.

i might go watch them again tomorrow. stache

  • So how is everybody feeling about this Minny dual?

Im nervous to say the least. I would say Minnesota is favored but alot of toss-ups in there.

    this is a cut-n-paste from another site - pin2win

125: MCD hasn't been putting up the big points it seems and don't think he will do it up in Minnesota against Thorn. Thorn is outmatched here but MCD just pulls out a dec.

    Iowa 3-0

133: Ramos is on a tear but don't see him going up to Minnesota and putting up big points againsts Dardenes. Dardenes is a tough wrestler and this one could go down to the wire. I think Ramos squeaks one out.

    Iowa 6-0

141: Ballweg impressed me a lot these last couple of duals and I am officially on the Ballweg train. His shots are crisp and powerful. Ballweg dec over Dardenes

    Iowa 9-0

149: Ness clearly the better wrestler and will score bonus points in this matchup. I am going with a major over Kelly but could see a fall here that kills the hawks hopes of winning.

    Iowa 9-4

157: DSJ continues to wrestle smart but won't put up big points against Zilverburg. Minnesota will have a game plan against DSJ because they know its a turning point in the dual if they can hold it to a decision.

    Iowa 12-4

165: Yohn will pound and pound Moore in this match. Think size will be the factor and give Yohn the decision but not the major

    Iowa 12-7

174: Storley has been one of my favorite gopher wrestlers. No clue why but I respect the kid's talents and think he pulls off a big win over Evans. Evans doesn't wrestle the same outside of Carver and that is the difference maker in this match.

    Iowa 12-10

184: Stienhouse is a beast and Lofthouse won't be in this match for the whole 7 mins. I think the score will reflect that he is but he never had a chance to beat him.

    Iowa 12-13

197: Burak is capable of a win here as he continues to improve in all aspects of college wrestling. I see Burak pulling off a big win for the hawks!

    Iowa 15-13

HWT: Sadly Telford is up against Nelson who I don't think is very good and lets people stay in the match. I think Telford stays in the match and keeps up but Nelson has just enough to pull out the win in the third period.

    Minnesota wins 16-15

    my personal opinion is:

125: MCD pulls out a dec.
    Iowa 3-0

133: Ramos wins - and it is a comfortable reg dec.
    Iowa 6-0

141: Ballweg wins (and if he does - i guarantee an AA for this stud!)
    Iowa 9-0

149: Ness wins a reg dec - close match that is not that close.
    Iowa 9-3

    157: DSJ wins by major/TF.
    Iowa 13-3

165: Yohn may win (imo - moore has a real shot here)
    Iowa 13-6

174: Evans wins - and the place gets pissed off/nuts.
    Iowa 16-6

    184: Stienhouse beats lofty.
    Iowa 16-9

    197: Burak wins!
    Iowa 19-9

    HWT: Nelson wins.
    Iowa 19-12

ok - so i back track a bit from my earlier post - but i think Evans and Ballweg make this an iowa win. Hope that Lofty/Moore/Burak/Telford can make this a complete domination. see no chance for kelly, unless he learns to get a single leg td.

Before the Illinois/Minnesota duel I thought it would be close, with Minnesota probably getting the W.

Now we'll have to see how Minnesota responds to the close win. I'm not a big predictions guy with wrestling, but I can see Iowa winning close or losing close. It's going to come down to (again) bonus points, and "tossup" matches (bold prediction, eh?).

Also, and I don't really like it, but I can see Ramos going down in his match. If that happens, Hawks probably don't come home winners.

  • First, thanks for this thread. This is my first time posting on it, but I do follow the thread and appreciate the efforts of those who keep us informed. I love to follow Iowa wrestling but find I don't have as much time to devote to it, so I have to pick my spots.

This duel is a huge gauge as to where this team is at. IMO, the 174 and 197 matches will decide it, especially if there aren't significant bonus points. I would love to see Evans pull this one out, but agree that Storley is a complete stud. That match alone is worth the price of admission.
