I hate Missouri and if they dont win the Mac every year something is wrong I just hoped they stayed in the big 4 for wrestling that conference cant survive with 3 teams

West Virginia has a wrestling program, so the B12 still has four.

  • Notes I found on the open practice:
"McD already looked mid season 125lbs form
True Frosh SKON v Ballweg and SKON is a stud! Beyond excited to see this muti-national champ wrestle
Telford put on MUSCLE! Was beating the hell out of some underclassman
Gamball was actually working his *** off. Unfortunately I got the impression last year he didn't care, different story on Saturday.
Was hoping to see Dwieza wrestle but I think he was rehabbing and riding the bike most of practice
Sam Brooks just looks like a beast "

Heard there was some stud recruits there but so far I only found Broc and Brady Berge were there. I believe Broc is headed to Iowa and Brady is a heavy Iowa lean????? Todd, you wanna call one of these recruits up before Brad double legs you

I dont think the big 12 was too happy about losing Mizz and A&M. They would never allow them to pick a sport to stay in. A&M cant even schedule their old Big 12 rivalry football games last I heard.

B12 wrestling was a joke already - TA&M was not part of it as far as i know. MO - going elsewhere is no problem to me.
Bigger Picture - I do have a problem that Texas college schools and CA college schools don't support wrestling enough. i know nobody in Iowa cares - but to make the sport bigger - the states that have large number of high school wrestlers need to part take more at the college level.

Texas is willing to schedule A & M for football, but A & M is not willing. Too many hard feelings that need to pass.

  • Heres some quotes I got from Tobini on a Iowa practice:
It was called a "open practice" and not everybody was there. Gilman and Skon worked out in the morning so they were not there I was bumbed about that. Clark was pounding a wreslter to be named later don't feel I should say who just yet. Gambrall and Burak were going hard and Burak was actually getting the better of Grant. But Grant stayed after and worked on the ropes hard for a while. He is definately putting the time in. Liked what I saw out of him. Burak was just to big for him. Dennis & Grothus were going hard and it was not all that close with Dennis winning in every aspect. McDonough looks GREAT and I felt bad for Gerule(sp). He was working hard and just couldn't do much with Matt major mismatch but he was pushing the pace hard. Ballweg was making Ryan look silly. I was impressed with Lira working hard and the amount of attention Terry was spending with him and Thomas was soaking it all in and learning lots of new things while battling with Meyer. Backes was taking it to Evans this will help Mike get better mentally and physically although I did feel sorry for Mike. Brooks and Klapt showed up later and Brooks is a beast LOVE THIS KID!!! He's a goer and he was schooling Klapt.

Well that's all I should say I guess... I hope I don't get in trouble for this just trying to give a little update of for some of you.....

  • Heres what FF said about it as well:
Spent a couple of hours in the Iowa wrestling room this morning at practice and came away with some confirmation of things that I thought and a few surprises. I have some strong opinions on the guys and definitelly think that the lineup is shaping up. Here is how I see the lineup this year (at least for the start.)

    125-McDonough
    133-Ramos
    141-Ballweg
    149-Kelly
    157-St John
    165-Evans
    174-Gambrall
    184-Lofthouse
    197-Lira
    285-Telford

Here is some stuff from today.

McDonough and Cory Clark were wrestling and it's a little hard to judge a young guy against Matt. Clark started out very sluggish and the coaches go after him a bit and he woke up as practice wore on. McDonough looks good and ready to go. Thomas Gilman was wrestling against Topher Carton and they were working on a lot of things. Gilman is really good and I believe the gem of this class. Carton looked pretty solid today and a lot more physical which he needs to be.

Ramos was going with Brody Grothus but I didn't watch a ton of them today. Grothus does still use a lot of what I call "junk" and has a lot of improvements to make.

Ballweg was wrestling Michael Kelly and they were good to watch. Both guys looked pretty good and I think that they are both ahead of where they were the end of last year. I really look for Ballweg to make some noise this year and score some points at nationals. Kelly is a grinder and had trouble using that style last year sucked down but looks a little leaner right now and was getting after today. I hope that he can get comfortable down at 149 and keep the energy up and impose his style. Skonieczny (sp?) was wrestling with Slaton and taking quite a few lumps but that was to be expected. He is certainly not ready this year but we'll see down the road.

I can't remember off the top of my head who St John was wrestling but he looks healthy and ready to go. Again, I didn't watch a ton of St John and it's hard to watch everyone.

Evans and Lofthouse were getting after it pretty good and had some nice battles. They were trying to work on Lofthouse in the bottom position and Evans was riding him hard. They had some good scrambles from the feet and both guys loooked pretty good overall. Lofthouse does not look like he got any bigger though which scares me a little bit.

Gambrall looked the best that I have seen in a long time if not ever. He is thinned down and working hard and looks really focused right now. He was rolling with Walt Gilmor today and definitely getting the best of him. I look for a very big year out of Grant at 174. Alex Meyer looked pretty good but don't remember who was rolling with right now.

Already spoke about Lofthouse but Fahler and Brooks were working out together until Brooks got a little banged up and they pulled him out. Didn't look like anything serious though. Fahler is in the dog house a little right now so we'll see what happens there. Brooks has a LOT of potential and I think with a year in the room that he is going to be very good for the Hawks.

Lira was wrestling Klapprodt who looks like he has gotten pretty big and won't see 174 again I don't think. Lira was getting the better of him from his feet and looked sharp there but was getting a little sloppy on the mat and needs to clean some things up for sure. Burak is a big tough kid but doesn't look real athletic and I don't think he looks like he's ready right now. I look for Lira to get every shot to win the spot and keep it but if he slips up they might pull Burak out of shirt and see what he can do.

Telford was not in there today and has been doing a lot of work with Dan Erekson with HWC since they don't really have any partners on the roster right now.

Sounds like there will be a big recruiting weekend coming up in October before the Iowa vs Penn State football game.

Wow guess Im way off then. Why would A&M be the ones butt-hurt? They left.

Also I wouldnt say the BIG 12 was a joke in wrestling. In recent history they have been the strong #2. OK has alot of young talent and Okie St is a top program. In 4-5 yrs if isu hires a decent coach they could turn it around.

  • Forgot to follow this thread - my bad.

I am concerned about a couple of those guys - specifically Gambrall and Telford. They seem to have a problem between the ears. Early last season, Bobby looked great and then he seemed to lose confidence. I hope he has that going again because he appears to have the skills to be an absolute beast.

As for Gambrall, I know there were training issues due to injury, but he looked uninterested most of the time to me.

From what I am reading and hearing Grant looks to be training hard,in shape and focused which is good because he does have talent he reminds me of Wes Hand very good but either lazy or had head issues not sure which but he was a very great wrestler that was sort of an under achiever. And Bobby better get it going because hw is going to be even tougher this year and I think he has the talent he just needs the will. Evans is another I guy I would throw in the mental issues as well, kid is a freak just need him to be himself,he was one of the only people I saw give Taylor fits at times so that says something in himself. I also believe this years class coming in has potential to be as PSUs team right now. I just hope thay all reach that potential.

  • read on another site that Dake is moving to 165. everyone seemed convinced it is a done deal.

that could give him 4 NCs at 4 different weights - but it puts him against Taylor (PSU)

also leaves the crack open a slight bit wider for DSJ to claim 157 (won't be easy though)

Dake stuck him this summer and isn't Howe going to be in there too?

  • How is awfully good, but I don't put him in the race with those two. Taylor is slick, but kind of cocky. I can see Dake handling him, but I could be wrong.

  • Big thing on Howe is he is powerful and hard to score on BUT he doesn't do a lot of scoring so it will be great to watch. And for the record I think Dake is cockier than DT. And like I said Dake handled him in freestyle but as we know that is a different trick pony there.

  • Notes from the practice on 9/21/12

Per spoons on HR - "As for what you might call practice. First off I will talk about the recruits and what I saw from them. Gilman is flat out AWESOME!!! Love this kid. Brooks is not that far behind him he has a motor and does not stop. Reminds me a lot of Phil K. but better. Actually I was impressed with Topher also. Topher was giving Clark fits and battling hard and actually winning a few battles. Meyer looks tough but still has some growing to do. His ceiling is pretty high though guys. Ryan was having trouble with DSJ but it was a bit unfair of matchup for him. I did not see Skon so no updates.
The rest of the crew was working hard and looked pretty good. I was impressed with how much Lira has improved. He was going hard with GG and actually took him down a couple times. I was also impressed with Kelly. He was going hard with Brent and actually holding his own. I also noticed Telford seems to have improved with his offense. He actually looked pretty good against Danimal. I can't say enough about McDonough he and Dennis were going hard and it was fun to watch for a while. Lofthouse looked pretty good also against Fahler. Another pretty exciting matchup was Ramos/Ballweg. A lot of good scraping but in the end Ramos got the better of the 2. Evans looked tough but still needs to fine tune a few things but he is tough and "mean" as normal. He has the attitude of a Hawk and that's what I love about him"

Per Gobbin on HR - "It's been quite some time since a true frosh has jumped out at me like Sammy Brooks.
Thomas Gilman will take over for McD next season and will be an absolute nightmare for anyone to keep off the top of the podium in March.
Mike Kelly is going to shock the hell out of ton of people this year.
DSJ is in the top 5 for best pound for pound wrestlers in the country.
Bob Telford will make the biggest jump in his game this season."

Per Ryno on HR - "Terry told Dennis to "turn him", referring to McD. he did, that match-up looked one sided to me. McD is certainly being pushed in the room.
Ramos/Balweg was fun to watch. Ballweg held is own, more so than Iexpected. Just some fun wrestling to watch.
Carton/Clark was fun to watch as well. Much more even at the beginning that the end. Clark took over as the practice went on.
DSJ looked to be working at 60%, he simply was dominating the kid he was wrestling.
GG was lean, didn't believe it til I saw it!"

Unless Brooks Black starts eatting Subway everyday with Jared i dont see him as "a future 165er". Looks like hes walking around at about 250.

Hes a big time recruit but will have to sit a year behind Telford which might factor into his recruitment. Then again Telford took the starting job this yr over a senior B1G champ as a freshman so who knows how it will play out.
