  • For the record, I am in favor of a national duals championship. For the average fan, winning a dual is far easier to understand than the current system at nationals. Wrestling needs to build a
wider fan base, or the sport will continue to diminish to cult status.

I disagree Sparty but see what you are saying.

Heres a question from another board i found interesting: How would you guys feel if hs wrestling switched from the singlet to "fight shorts" as in ufc shorts?

Im guessing the angle would be that ufc is HUGE right now and it would draw some new kids in hs wrestling rooms thus making the sport more popular. I dont know any hs kids or younger that are too fond of rocking the singlet. Alot of kids new to the sport arent too big on the "tights or leotards" either.

    Your thoughts?

    UFC fight shorts?

I dont know, guess I never had that issue while being in a singlet..... I was so secure I had John Holmes feeling unconfident.

Personally I think of most the heavy weights in high school are pure cookie dough, they probably dont want to wrestle with their gut haning over their UFC shorts.

  • Cael Sanderson (I know, I know) sums up why No to the National Duals as the National Championship is the correct answer

    Some Highlights:

-there should be data, supporting evidence to support such a drastic change – we have none.

-because they are dismantling the greatest wrestling tournament in the world. The ticket sales, excitement, media coverage and TV coverage continue to increase year after year.

-Because this proposal is being pushed using the argument “To get what we have never had, we must do what we have never done”. ironically, this proposal is in direct contrast to that argument. We have been trying for 25 years to make the National Duals work and still have not created a satisfactory result. Is this not continuing to do the same thing (disguised a little differently) and expecting a different result? Yes.

-because the less funded programs will suffer. A team with partial scholarships will struggle to compete. Not having a chance to compete in the National Team Championship makes a program less relevant. How many years of not even sniffing at qualifying for the National Team Dual Championship will an AD put up before considering reducing support or changing divisions? Can we afford to lose more programs as we trial run the national duals for the 26th time?

-because the reason we have a national championship is to determine the best team in the nation. Dual meets are subjective to “line-ups”and not the best way to determine real champion. The brilliance of the traditional format is that it “corrects” for the statistical problems with a larger “sample size.

He goes on at some length about this. Great information.

    Um no.

Flo asked this question a while ago, and got a bunch of false answers on teams wearing shorts as far back as the 50's but then switched to the singlet. Might have been true at certain schools, but not for the majority of them.

  • I read somewhere too that they (the NWCA) wasn't even going to bring it up to the NCAA because there wasn't a clear consensus. I'll try and find the info later.

But I think it's good that the NCAA said no. I'm sorry but if the National Duals wants to stay alive they need to put some effort into producing a product that is successful BEFORE bringing it to the NCAA.

I don't understand how an event that is failing is somehow going to "save the sport."

i think a big part of the event failing in the past has much to do with having no qualification for any team to be in it. in the past - all the teams were decided up front in September/October. reduce the qualifying to 8 teams. the top 8 from the legacy tourney. this all could be done the week after the current system - maybe 2 weeks after. This will give both tourneys a reason to co-exist! I love the idea of a national dual. in the end if 2 teams split the win - both could be declared national champs. I know no other sport does this - oh wait - the football still does have this split national champions, even though only one bcs champion.

i really see it working - not from what has been presented - but there is a way!

    3 stories Ive found:
    (1) http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2012/09/13/penn-state-tops-w-i-n-s-preseason-rankings/
    Rankings:
    McDonough - #1
    Ramos - #3
    St. John - #2
    Evans - #6
    Lofthouse - #5
    Gambrall - #10
    Telford - #6

    (2) ISU revamping their facilities per: http://www.cyclones.com/ViewArticle.dbml?SPSID=46632&SPID=4248&DB_LANG=C&ATCLID=205684406&DB_OEM_ID=10700

    (3) Some writer proposes a NASCAR like ranking for the championships. Something like a championship, within a championship. I dont follow NASCAR and when people talk about it for some reason my mind shuts off. Give it a read, it seems like a cool idea. http://blogs.desmoinesregister.com/dmr/index.php/2012/09/11/does-nascar-have-the-answer-to-ncaa-wrestlings-dual-dilemma/

  • UNI release on UNI, Missouri, and Old Dominion joining the MAC

The Mid-American Conference (MAC) announced today the addition of the University of Missouri, the University of Northern Iowa and Old Dominion University as affiliate members in the sport of wrestling.

All three universities have joined the MAC with five-year agreements, with Missouri and UNI joining the MAC for the conference tournament only for the 2012-13 season and then participate fully in regular season and tournament action for the next four consecutive years (2013-14 season thru 2016-17 academic season). Old Dominion will join the MAC for the regular season and tournament action in the 2013-14 season through the 2017-18 academic season.

The addition of the three affiliate members will increase the MAC wrestling membership to nine members with Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois and Ohio. With this increase in wrestling membership, the MAC will become the third largest Division I wrestling league in the nation only behind the Big Ten and the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). This move will also provide the conference extended recruiting opportunities from across the Midwest towards the East Coast into Virginia.

"After significant study and discussion by our member institution's coaches and administrators the Mid-American Conference has made a move that will take what is already a very strong wrestling conference and make it one of the elite wrestling conferences in the country," said Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher, Commissioner of the Mid-American Conference. "I am pleased to welcome Missouri, Northern Iowa, and Old Dominion, their student-athletes, coaches and fans to the MAC in the sport of wrestling."
