So has any decision been made what conference Mizz will wrestle in this year?

Last I heard the WWC was going to let them in, but I haven't heard anything recently. I'll try and find some links

  • Heres a link to the article saying they might go to the WWC. The second one is saying that the WWC is their most likely destination. I'll keep looking, it should be settled by now...

  • Sounds like they haven't figured it out yet. This quote is from Jeff Jarnecke, NCAA associate director of championships:

“We haven’t had these specific conversations, but if they were able to get back with the Big 12, that’s a reasonable solution for us,” Jarnecke said. “If they had an affiliate membership with another conference, that’s a reasonable solution for us. And I suppose at day’s end, if those two options or any other options didn’t come to fruition, they would wrestle through the West Regional next year.”

So it basically sounds like they'll be in the WWC if they can't find another conference to call home.

  • FloWrestling did an article on the returners at 125.

Can anyone stop Matt McDonough next year?

The 125lbs weight class has 5 of the 8 all-americans returning for the 2012-2013 season lead by 2x NCAA champion Matt McDonough of Iowa. McDonough will return for his senior campaign in search of his third NCAA title while Nico Megaludis of Penn State, and a host of others, will attempt to dethrone him. Nico Megaludis surprised many when he upset #2 seed Zach Sanders of Minnesota in the quarterfinals at the NCAA tournament and then beat Cornell's Frank Perrelli for a birth in the finals against McDonough.

Also coming back will be Ryan Mango of Stanford, a very talented multiple time all-american who wants that elusive national title in his final year of college. Other returning as all-americans are Jesse Dlegado of Illinois and Steve Bonanno of Hofstra. Jesse Delgado was the only guy to defeat McDonough last year in a first semester dual meet. Missouri's Alan Waters has been ranked near the top in each of his first two years of college but has not been able to do it at the big dance, could Sammie Henson be the guy he needs in his corner to get him over the hump?

Here is a list of the wrestlers returning at 125 from the all-americans to those who made it to the round of 12 and round of 16:

    1. Matt McDonough- Iowa Sr.
    2. Nico Megaludis- Penn State So.
    5. Ryan Mango- Stanford, Sr.
    7. Jesse Delgado- Illinois, So.

  • Montell Marion arrested again

Former University of Iowa wrestler Montell Marion, a three-time All-American who has been in and out of legal trouble during his time on the team, was arrested again about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of domestic assault.

Details of the incident that led to his arrest were not immediately available. A bond amount has not yet been set in his case. Marion is no longer eligible to wrestle for Iowa, although he’s still listed as a “professional short-term monthly” student in the university’s online directory.

Marion in March pleaded guilty to driving while barred as a habitual offender and was ordered to pay a fine. The plea was meant to close out a string of legal trouble he’d been in over the previous two years.

The three-time All-American and two-time NCAA runner-up who tallied more than 90 wins with the Hawkeyes was banned from all team activities in May 2010 after he was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

That arrest came after Marion had received moving violations for failing to maintain a safe distance and disobeying a traffic signal, according to his attorney. At the same time he received the operating while intoxicated citation, Marion also was ticketed for failure to use a turn signal and failure to obey a traffic control device.

Marion got a speeding ticket in July 2011, marking his sixth moving violation in two years and warranting a year driving ban. His attorney in March said Marion wasn’t aware that he had been banned when he was arrested on suspicion of driving while barred.

His attorney, Paul Rosenberg of Des Moines, told The Gazette in March that his client “never would have driven had he known.”

Marion’s once-permanent suspension from the Hawkeye wrestling squad was lifted in January 2011. Despite an offered transfer release from the UI, he chose to stay and try to regain his spot on the team.

Marion earned his spot back and received the team’s Mike J. McGivern Award for the team’s most courageous wrestler. In March, Marion made his second NCAA finals appearance and placed second in an overtime battle.

  • To answer the question posed by FloWrestling, I don't think anyone can beat McD in the tournament. Delgado would be the only guy I would give a chance to.

Also, I really hope they don't switch McD and Ramos. Ramos needs to get his head in it when he needs too, not move down a weight to win.

I have heard that but dont see it happening. Fact is McD controls his weight so well that theres no need to switch. McD was a national champ last yr and Ramos beat Oliver.

McD will win it next yr again and i dont see any real threat. Only thing that bothers me is a true freshman from PSU getting 2nd last yr. Christ now these A-holes are getting stud lower weights too. Brands will have to earn it if expects any NCs now that Cael is in happy valley. Makes for some awesome competition tho. Would guess PSU gets it this yr again but then its open again for a couple yrs. So many good young teams right now. Man is it wrestling season yet?!?

  • Per spoons
125: McDonough vs. Gurule. Last year I had the pleasure of Gurule riding with us to BIG'S, he is quite the character but we all know how this will turn out.
133: Ramos vs. Trizzino. Ramos starts out a little slow but dominates in the end.
141: Ballweg vs. Dziewa. Probably the most anticipated wrestleoff we will have. I'll take Dziewa in a close win
149: Carew vs. Trizzino/Grothus winner. I'm leaning towards Trizzino but would not be suprised if Grothus wins Friday night. But the winner gets Carew and I think Dylan wins a close match here. I know have alot of people have given up on Dylan but I am not ready yet. Anybody that has had 7 surgeries on his knees and still wants to wrestle says something to me about how bad he wants it. Word is Carew isnt a 100%
157: DSJ vs. Kelly. Kelly will try alot of things and maybe a few things that are a bit uncalled for but in the end DSJ is a winner by major.
165: Suprise for you guys here Moore vs. Rhoads. I like Moore to win pretty handily but not enough for a major.
174: Lofthouse vs. Evans/Gambrall winner. Yes I think all 3 will try for 174 and the "losers" will adjust accordingly. My thoughts are Lofthouse wins 174 over Evans and Grant goes to 184 while Mike goes back to 165. That's the best thing that can happen but if Evans wins 174 that may hurt us a bit then Lofthouse wins out over Grant for 184 and forces Grant back to 197.
184: Fahler vs. Haug where Fahler wins but eventually loses the spot later to Grant
197: Lira vs. Burak. My heart says Lira shocks the world and wins but my gut is tellling me Burak wins a VERY close match.
Hwt: Telford vs. ???? Maybe Backes lases up and wrestles with Bobby. I doubt that they let Danimal do it but maybe...
