    This is what you get when you play an OOC that does not prepare you for road games in the B1G. We get Purdue, Illinois, Minny all @ Home, plus PSU, NW and Nebby x2. Things will be looking up. Thats 7 very winnable games. Only @ IU, do I doubt we have much of a chance. 9-9 or 10-8 are still in play.

  • This may get buried or missed but I feel this team lacks a closer. Last year with Gatens, Iowa could pull these out. I don't know whose hand you want the ball in this year if you need a basket or a FT. Next year, Iowa has 3 good shooters coming in with Jok (90%+ on the line), Uthoff, and Meyer. I'd like to think Iowa can actually win some of these games next year, which is when I thought Iowa would make the NCAA again anyways. Iowa should win 6 or 7 of the next 8 and this will be solidly An NIT team, something that we shouldn't be upset with considering where Iowa was under Lickliter, the weak non conference, and where the RPI sits now with really no significant wins. Iowa can very easily go deep in the NIT this year, learn how to play tournament basketball and get more practice in this season, before making a run at the dance next year. Fran has this program so very close. We just need to stick by the team this year and it will pay off next season. Go Hawks!

  • any of you guys play scrabble? it is hard to score with only consonants, no vowels. iowa has a roster of complementary players, no creators. gracious, the guys play hard but this bunch needs help. looks like a holding pattern at about 500 until at least the 14-15 season. maturity of this group won't mean excellence. they need to flip the roster to show real improvement. the b10 is too strong--recruits too many great young players--to rely on experience to bring loads more success. nobody's to blame.

    Not even close...they are just now being forced to learn how to finish games off, on the road...something they should've been allowed to learn in the OOC schedule.

  • I think ideally Marble is the "closer" (UI) or "vowel" (silver) but obviously that hasn't been the case since his injury. Down the line, I think Gesell, Clemmons, and Woodbury can all develop into guys who can effectively create their own shots. We've already seen some of it this year with Clemmons's dribble drive, Gesell's pull up jumper, and Woody's soft touch around the rim. Patience Hawkeyes, patience.

  • I agree that Clemmons and Gesell have potential to be go-to players, but offensively, Woodbury is a lost cause right now. He is good for defense, which is what Iowa has needed in the past. His soft touch can easily be blocked by anyone over 6'. I'm not saying he can't be an offensive threat 2 years from now, but he is a real work in progress in terms of getting him to play like a true 7'1" player. He needs to learn to jump. He needs to learn to take the ball up strong. Most of his shots are soft hooks. Last night against Wisconsin, Woodbury made a layup and it appeared that he shot it almost from his shoulder instead of going up strong above his head and rim. Olesani right now is the better player for any inside offensive production for any of Iowa's centers. Olesani is quicker and runs the court well, but does commit silly fouls.

    I compare this team and program very much to what Tom Creen did at Indiana.
    Fran is in his 3rd year at Iowa. This team is still a year away from the NCAA tourney. It took Tom Creen 4 years of rebuilding and recruiting to get to the dance.

    It's frustrating, but will take patience. Fran has this program headed in the right direction.

Every announcer has said Iowa is a good free throw shooting team, which I wouldn't completely agree with. Iowa is good at drawing fouls and getting free throws, but they really aren't a team that's going to go to the line and shoot around 80% every night, which is what I'd expect from good free throw shooting teams. They aren't a poor free throw shooting team all around, but I don't agree with the good side of it.

    I think you're setting the bar a little a high there with 80%. Only two teams in all of college basketball shoot better than 77.8%. Also, while Marble isn't a phenomenal free throw shooter, 78% is pretty solid, and it seems like that number moves up as the game enters crunch time. I actually wish there was an easily accessible breakdown of players' free throw percentages during each portion of the game. If there was though, I imagine Marble's percentage would be much higher as the game winds down.
