  • Question to my Hawkeye friends. I know wrestling has always been huge in Iowa and you guys were pretty much the be all end all of wrestling for what seemed like forever( AKA Iowa dominated. What was it? 26 straight conference championships?.. Amazing .. anyway, ) How has the recent trend gone in Big Ten wrestling? What about the college wrestling nation as a whole? Is Iowa still pretty much unmatched top dog? Has the playing field leveled out in the past 10 years or so? Just curious myself, love wrestling but, being from and living in the deep south, it's just not something that garners much interest here. I wish southern colleges had more enthusiam for the sport. Thoughts? TIA.

  • Well it's not just Iowa thats the be all end all, there has been 4-5 top dogs since the beginning with Oklahoma State, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Oklahoma...

    Iowa and Okie St. have combined to take just under 70% of all NCAA Team Championships

    So you have your teams that come on and have a few good years, the traditional powerhouses will have occasional bad years. But in general its been the same top dogs since the beginning. Penn State has now come on strong and I think they will be around the top for a long time to come.

    So the playing field hasnt really leveled out but its more disparity than back in Okie St and Iowa's hay days.

  • I dont think im going to be able to do play by play today, I dont have two computers like i did yesterday and this one will be hooked up to my TV. So I'll post and contribute but not going to do play by play from my phone. That would suck.

    Here are the hawkeyes in the championships and their matchup:

    125: Matt McDonough vs. Zach Sanders (Minnesota) - I dont think i need to say anything here. Matt has showed time and time again hes no match for
    Sanders, hopefully Matt doesnt get lazy (i dont think that will ever happen) Matt wins 6-2

    133: Tony Ramos vs. Logan Steiber (OSU) - Going to be a tough match-up for Tony and he needs to do his best to stay out from under Logan, if he
    does I say he wins a 4-3 decision

    141: Montell Marion vs. Kellen Russell (Mich) - Marion has been on a tear lately I believe he beats Russell 7-4

    157: Derek St. John vs. Jason Welch (Northwestern) - When St. John was healthy he never lost to Welch and StJ looks to be back to near 100%. Derek has been giving up his legs way to much and I think Welch will finish those shots and beat St. J 7-3 (hope im wrong)

    165: Mike Evans vs. David Taylor (PSU) - Evans has looked good this weekend but Taylor is still on another level, I think Taylor wins 12-7

    HWT: Bobby Telford vs. Tony Nelson (Minnesota) - This could be the match that decides the B1G championship and unfortunately I think Nelson is too much for Telford. Telford loses 4-1

  • No matter what happens the guys for the most part exceed my expectations. I saw improvement and i saw them wrestling hard which is about all anyone can ask (even though I get upset when they lose which I always will and do no matter what) As a team they looked great with the exception of Loftys last second brain fart. GG looks primed to peak at the nationals again(at least I hope) He hasn't been back at 84 long but is heading back to AA potential. Wagner is just undersized no digs on him I love his heart and he was a good Hawkeye. Kelly I will not comment on till later.

    As for my predictions and I hope I am wrong I think we can win 5 but I only see Mc D winning. Everyone else I think are going to lose close matches except for Evans who is just wrestling one of the best wrestlers I have seen In years. Evans had a great turny but unless he can catch Taylor some how and pin him it won't be a close match. Once again I hope i am wrong they all have the ability to win but I doubt it happens.
