    Scary thin at MLB now

  • Quinton Alston and Laron Taylor or John Kenny are going to be 2nd and 3rd string. As long as we pick one or 2 up this year we should be fine.

  • I would say DE is weaker then MLB hopefully he bulks up and keeps his quickness

As long as everyone stays healthy, I agree that Iowa should be fine at linebacker. And if there are some injuries, Nate can always move back if need be.

  • I can't say I like it unless they think he is going to out grow lb quickly

I like the timing of the move, as this gives the coaches 15 practices to take a look at him there. I'm not totally sold on the move, though, as playing on the line of scrimmage is a totally different world from what he's used to. But by the same token, especially if the coaches are confident that Kenny, Spearman or Jewell can earn a spot in the two-deep this fall, there isn't much downside to experimenting with Meier for part or all of spring practice. Also, just speculating here, but Meier was listed at 235 as a freshman. It's possible that the coaches feel he'll slowly grow his way out of linebacker anyway, so why not start now?

  • Alston will be a senior after this season, if he gets injured we are screwed as is. I'm sure someone will step up but I was hoping Meier would've been our MLB for the next 3 years after that. I believe he qualified for medical redshirt last year

As for Meier at DE. I hope it works out. He's fast, strong, and runs like a ball of piss & vinegar. I heard when he weighed in last year he was 235 of lean muscle so there is plenty of room to add on 20-30 lbs

  • Alston will only be a junior, so he has one year after Morris. I think they are fine as long as they get a good class of 2014 linebackers.

I would like to mention one former great Iowa DE, Leroy Smith, in the late 80's and early 90's. He was a converted running back that never "bulked up", but was a great pass rusher because he had speed none of the o-line men were prepared to match. Let's hope Nate can do something similar in the 2013-2014 seasons.

    GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

an edit: I just checked and Leroy holds the Iowa single game and season records for sacks, 5 vs tOSU (11/2/91) and 18 for the 1991 season. He was 6'2" AND ONLY 225 LBS!!!! (BTW, he had 14 total tackles in that VICTORY over tOSU!!!)

  • I like the move. He maybe up to 250, 260 now. Not the thin LBs Iowa is looking at these days. If he runs a 4.7, then, we will have a poor man Dwight Freeney. He's around 6-1, 6-2 but runs a 4.48. Who knows, in another year, he'll be up to 275 and move inside to be another Klug flex

Ahh, Leroy Smith, definitely a Freeney type of player. But can't cut it at 225 to play DE anymore.

  • Didn't want to start another thread, but Greg Mabin also was moved from WR to DB and Maurice Flemming is listed at WR again, pretty sure they listed the switch to DB on HawkeyeSports.com so this may indicate he's back on offense.

Yeah, if Nate can be a reasonable facsimile of either Leroy Smith, who switched to DE from
RB, or Dwight Freeney, Hawkeye fans will be ecstatic, indeed.
