Mike Gesell Named Parade All-American

  • From UI Sports Information:

University of Iowa incoming basketball recruit Mike Gesell has been named to the 2012 Parade Magazine High School Boys Basketball All-America team. The list includes 40 of the nation’s top prep basketball standouts.

Gesell (6-foot-2, 185) is one of five student-athletes named to the list that will be attending Big Ten universities this fall.

Gesell, who prepped at South Sioux City High School, was named the Gatorade Nebraska Player of the Year his junior and senior seasons. He was a four-time first team all-state, all-conference and all-metro honoree. The point guard averaged 25.1 points, 7.4 assists, six rebounds and 2.9 steals his senior year, leading his team to a Class B state runner-up finish after winning the title in 2010 and 2011.

Gesell, who is the all-time leading scorer in metro Sioux City history with 2,112 points, was selected and played in the 2012 All-American Championship at the Final Four in New Orleans, dishing out a game-high five assists.

  • I'm really looking forward to seeing which incoming freshmen crack the rotation this season. There should be a good amount o healthy competition.

  • What if...Iowa had been able to snag Barnes and Paige the last few years? With Woodbury and Gesell coming into a program with those two, we'd really would've been looking good.

And like you said, that would have seemed almost too good to be true!

  • Would have been pretty awesome for sure. I wonder how Barnes would have ended up, would he have still left after two years? Or was UNC the catalyst for him jumping to the NBA early?

  • Nice to talk about Hawkeye BB, especially in the off-off season.

HawksDay and IBritches, do I know you from the other place?

    NYCHawkeye

  • Don't think so...I've just gotten interested in these boards recently. But I sure do enjoy reading all the insights that folks smarter than me have on the Hawks!

I am looking forward to the upcoming hoops year. It may take some of these talented frosh some time to adjust to BIG level ball but we have a chance to have a better year and maybe even make the NCAA tourney.

As for the ones who got away, I don't worry about "should of, would of, could ofs". I think we can look at who we have and see good things on the horizon...
