Malik Golden and Penn State

  • So Golden basically picked Penn State over us. He had said that he almost committed to the Hawks during and unofficial visit but then PSU offered. That being said, with the stuff that is going on at PSU, would he change his mind and come to the Hawks? I know they won't have sanctions BUT he will be playing under a coach that didn't contact the police when his assistant was doing stuff with little boys. That in my mind would make me not ever want to go that school. PLUS Joe Pa could get the ax. Doubtful but still a possibility.

Malik was very high on Iowa, but it's tough to tell if Iowa was actually 2nd. BC and UConn were also in the mix. My impression was always that if the entire University of Iowa had been moved to the east coast, then the Hawkeyes would have been the team to beat.

As for Penn State, the stuff that allegedly went on is deplorable, no doubt about it. But I don't think recruits really choose Penn State because of JoePa anymore, because he barely even does anything (when he "coaches" from the press box, he doesn't even wear a head set), and there's a very good chance that he'll retire before that recruit's career at Penn State would end.

I'm sure Penn State will be proactive in discussing this with their recruits. I could see some fallout happening, but wouldn't anticipate a lot. And my impression is that Malik is pretty set on Penn State. I'll be sure to keep you all posted if I hear anything different.

It's possible that with this and the case a few years back with the "Training Rules" of the Penn State women's basketball team would tell recruits that there may some incredibly sketchy things going on at the university and certainly having the AD and Director of Business and Finance/Head of the campus police possibly going to jail for their actions will if not scare some kids away, it will definitely anger and scare off some parents. I'm watching the press conference on ESPN with the lead investigator and prosecutors, I'll update what they say in the thread I started about this. I will say though that Paterno will not be fired over this, he has yet to be charged with (why, I really don't know) Failure to Report, so there really is no grounds to fire him at this time.

It definitely could impact their recruiting. But with two people who have already lost their jobs as a result, it could be fairly easy to compartmentalize the blame and sell recruits and their parents on this being a problem only with people who are no longer associated with the football program. Not saying I agree with this, but I would assume that's the strategy Penn State will take in recruiting.

  • Sean Fitz, who covers Penn State for 247Sports, has been all over this story. He spoke to all of Penn State's commits, including Malik, about the allegations. You can see what they had to say here:
