Let's predict Iowa in Big 10 play

  • A few posters correctly predicted an 11-2 pre-con record. I, for one, called 9-4 (glad I was wrong), and someone called 13-0.

Can anyone dig up that thread? Probably from late Oct/early Nov 13. (There might be two as well.)

9-9 will be really tough in BIG play, which would give us 20 wins and a certain NCAA bid. Our conference is stacked.

I see 8-10, one win in the tournament, which leaves us 20-13, and really on the bubble, win two (21-13) in the BIG tourney and we are in.

9-9 does not = certain. need 10-8 and a few tourney wins to be certain.

  • I predicted 9-9 before the season started, and I still like that prediction. Especially with Iowa's relatively soft nonconference schedule, I don't think 20-11 puts the Hawkeyes in the Big Dance unless they can make the finals of the B1G tourney, and that wouldn't even be certain.

It will be more about who we defeat with those 9 wins than anything else...you knock off teams like Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota along the way and I feel VERY confident we'll get a bid. If we win one or two in the BTT, then it will be guaranteed imo.

But if Iowa is in 7th or 8th, I'm not sure 9-9 does the job. There just weren't enough quality wins in the nonconference portion of the schedule. One advantage Iowa will have is that the schedule sets up nicely for the Hawkeyes to be winning a lot down the stretch, which is one thing the selection committee values.

  • I had us starting out 2-4 and finishing up at 10-8. I'd like to believe we can sneak a win or two against the upper echelon teams, but if we don't correct some of our sloppy play as of late, that will be difficult.

(Of course one of those 2 wins is the home game vs MSU, but if Derrick Nix plays like he did vs Texas, I might have to scrap that...yikes! pray be a fluke..9-9?)

    Good points Todd.

I will only say, if the B1G weren't the #1 conference in the country, then I'd be inclined to agree that 9-9/7th place wouldn't be good enough for an invite, but since that's not the case....

I think it'd definitely be close, but I just don't think Iowa had enough quality wins in the nonconference to push it over the top. The B1G was just as good last year, and Iowa went 9-9, but wasn't that close to making the Big Dance. Iowa obviously performed better in this year's nonconference games than in last year's, but I'm not sure there are enough quality wins there to impress the selection committee.

I understand where you're coming from, but was the B1G considered the #1 conference last year? Anyone who finishes .500 in the conference this year should get more consideration. Also, Iowa would be a great story...and while that isn't supposed to play a role in the selection process, no one knows for sure.

I believe the B1G was considered the top conference last year. If not at the beginning of the season (I'm honestly not sure about that either way), then definitely by the end of the season when the selection committee was meeting.

Iowa would definitely be a great story, though - great point.

  • First, my sincerest apologies for the long post, but i have some observations I'd like to share, and welcome counter arguments.

As for our big 10 record, I'm with my friend, NYC, 8 - 10, and agree with Todd, no dancing in March unless we do well in the B1G tourney. We can start the big 10 season with a 0 - 4 record, and that's quite a scary prospect for a young team.

Two factors, as I've mentioned in my other posts worry me about this year. Adam's lack of strength and speed at the center position, and the strength of the big 10 this year. (Honestly, I can see us doing worse than 8 -10 if we don't drastically improve throughout the season). Losses against VT and WS spoke loudly of how naively optimistic some of us may have been before the start of the season.

So here's the stinky stuff: I know that that the following could upset some of my fellow Hawks, and I apologize in advance if that is the case. 1. I'm way underwhelmed by Adam's skills especially given the preseason comparisons to Zeller; 2. He seems slow, weak, and unauthentic, which means bulking him up could only slow him down even more - I don't think I've seen him dunk the ball yet, has anyone? Can he jump at all, or hopping 2 inches off the floor is the best he can do? 3. I would love for him to prove me wrong, but I think he would need a lot of help during the Big 10 games to defend the opponents' centers, which will draw our other players to double or triple team his guy leaving shooters open for long range bombs - if I'm not mistaking we're pretty poor defending from behind the arch already, no? I think this explains the very bizarre rotation he gets during the games, starting out, but getting subbed quickly to limit exploitations of his shortcomings. He's almost always pulled out by the first TO, sometimes because he racks up 2 quick fouls while trying to compensate for being beaten to the ball.

Again, i love the kid, i wish nothing but the best for him, and i hope to god he never reads these posts, but I think he's the weakest link on the team (the starters) right now, and unless one of the other guys steps up I can see our softness in that position costing us lots of games in the league. I so hope I'm wrong! I so hope Adam makes me look like a complete idiot. Go for it kid. The old man can take it. :)

Happy Holidays to all! And especially to Adam. I hope he becomes the best 7-footer in Iowa basketball history.

yep me too. but as far as the iowa team goes .... i'm liking the athleticism of the big O (Gabe Olaseni)! He seems real good on D, and his offense will come around (check out the way he shoots FTs).

  • this team is not as young as people make it out to be.
1st Iowa returns 5 of their top 6 scorers and 6 of the top 8 from last years team
    Gatens 15.2 ppg gone
JR Marble 11.5 ppg last year 15.7 ppg this year
SO White 11.1 ppg last year 13.6 ppg this year
JR Basabe 8.2 ppg as a starter this year 6.9 ppg coming off the bench
JR McCabe 7.8 ppg as a starter this year 5.7 ppg coming off the bench
SO Oglesby 6.4 ppg off the bench this year 5.5 ppg off the bench
    Cartwright 6.0 ppg Gone
SR May 4.3 ppg this year off the bench and 4.3 ppg this year off the bench
as a reserve Brommer 1.4 ppg gone
    Archie 1,3 ppg gone
SO Olaseni 1.4 ppg last year 3.8 ppg this year
    Replacements
    FR Woodbury 6.6 ppg
    FR Gesell 9.4 ppg
FR Clemmons 4.2 ppg Super State 1st team, #1 PG and 3rd best player by Michigan PREPS
FR Ingram 1.4 ppg selected to the 12 player Indiana All Star team
this is not a young nor is it an inexperienced team, all having 3 freshmen in the lineup means is that now Fran has a deeperand more experienced bench at his disposal than he has had since he has been here. as for the talent
White a Freshmen AA and a member of the BT Freshmen team
Woodbury 4* 39th best player and NBPA Top 100 camp MVP
Gesell 2 time Gatorade player of the year in Neb,Captain of the Super State team and Mr. BB 4* 75th best player
Basabe named to the all BT Freshmen Team
May named to the all BT Freshmen Team
sorry but this is better than people think,
Butler is not loaded with star players havong just 2 4* players with the rest being 3* and 2* players
my prediction was 10-3 i9n the OOC slate and they ended up 11-2
in conference play 10-8 holding serve at home.
I am not worried about MSU as Fran, Alford and even Lick have beaten MSU at home., sorry folks this is not a Alford or Lick coached team, Fran is a much better coach than both of them.

My friend, Lao: You know I love you just as much as I love my single malt Scotch! But please send me the name of whatever it is you're drinking! :) Should we bet again as we did two years ago? I'll pray to lose to you this time as I did back then, but it'd be good to run up the score on you. :)

BTW, I just noticed something. Steve Alford could use this site as evidence that Iowa is a football school - you hardly see any basketball posts on this site. If KF sneezes someone will start a thread and 95 posters offer their diagnosis.

This site will get more posters crossing over from other sites if it splits its football and basketball forums.
