I predicted 9-9 before the season started, and I still like that prediction. Especially with Iowa's relatively soft nonconference schedule, I don't think 20-11 puts the Hawkeyes in the Big Dance unless they can make the finals of the B1G tourney, and that wouldn't even be certain.

It will be more about who we defeat with those 9 wins than anything else...you knock off teams like Indiana, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota along the way and I feel VERY confident we'll get a bid. If we win one or two in the BTT, then it will be guaranteed imo.

Alrighty, let's try it like this, with my prediction seeming to be upgraded to 11-7
31/12 vs. Indiana * W
01/06/13 at Michigan * L
01/10/13 vs. Michigan State * W
1/13/13 at Northwestern * W
01/19/13 vs. Wisconsin * W
01/22/13 at Ohio State * L
01/27/13 at Purdue * W
01/31/13 vs. Penn State * W
02/03/13 at Minnesota * L
02/06/13 at Wisconsin * L
02/09/13 vs. Northwestern * W
02/14/13 at Penn State * W
02/17/13 vs. Minnesota * W
02/21/13 at Nebraska * W
02/27/13 vs. Purdue * W

So I come out to 10-8. I'm assuming they'll drop a game they shouldn't and win a few they shouldn't too.

Quality of wins will definitely be a factor. Another factor will be the conference record of other B1G teams. If Iowa is in 6th place at 9-9, that would definitely help. But if Iowa is in 7th or 8th, I'm not sure 9-9 does the job. There just weren't enough quality wins in the nonconference portion of the schedule. One advantage Iowa will have is that the schedule sets up nicely for the Hawkeyes to be winning a lot down the stretch, which is one thing the selection committee values.

Good points Todd.
I will only say, if the B1G weren't the #1 conference in the country, then I'd be inclined to agree that 9-9/7th place wouldn't be good enough for an invite, but since that's not the case....

I think it'd definitely be close, but I just don't think Iowa had enough quality wins in the nonconference to push it over the top. The B1G was just as good last year, and Iowa went 9-9, but wasn't that close to making the Big Dance. Iowa obviously performed better in this year's nonconference games than in last year's, but I'm not sure there are enough quality wins there to impress the selection committee.

I understand where you're coming from, but was the B1G considered the #1 conference last year? Anyone who finishes .500 in the conference this year should get more consideration. Also, Iowa would be a great story...and while that isn't supposed to play a role in the selection process, no one knows for sure.

I'll give this a go...

01/27/13 at Purdue * W
01/31/13 vs. Penn State * W
02/03/13 at Minnesota * L
02/06/13 at Wisconsin * L
02/09/13 vs. Northwestern * W
02/14/13 at Penn State * W

Well, I get 10-8 too...as long as we can split with Wisky...should be doable. A young team on the road is gonna make this season...nervy.

My friend, Lao: You know I love you just as much as I love my single malt Scotch! But please send me the name of whatever it is you're drinking! :) Should we bet again as we did two years ago? I'll pray to lose to you this time as I did back then, but it'd be good to run up the score on you. :)
BTW, I just noticed something. Steve Alford could use this site as evidence that Iowa is a football school - you hardly see any basketball posts on this site. If KF sneezes someone will start a thread and 95 posters offer their diagnosis.
This site will get more posters crossing over from other sites if it splits its football and basketball forums.

be a fluke..9-9?)
