Jok's No Joke, Part Deux

  • 37 versus Dowling in Valley's 78-67 win tonight. The kid's absolutely fearless. Dowling played him tough. He hit 3 after 3 with a hand in his face. Clint Boffeli added 21.

Jon Wisnieski had 17 to lead Dowling. He's got a great build for a kid 6-5/215...definitely has the frame to add another 25-35 pounds of muscle. Solid, all-around athlete.

  • Definitely the best player in the state.

Todd, why hasn't he been evaluated and ranked by 247 yet??

I've also wondered why he hasn't been re-evaluated yet. He's been having a pretty huge year so far.

  • Because he committed to IA, there's no need for evaluation to hype the program. He'll just show us the goods next year in person.

  • After the way this team shot against Purdue, there is little doubt in my mind that Jok will get a nice amount of minutes next year. Fran said that Ogelsby doesn't miss in practice. Well, he misses in games. A lot. Wide open or with a hand in his face. I don't get how you can be labeled a sharp shooter, but shoot so poorly. Now he is afraid to take open looks, which completely defeats the purpose of him playing.

    KCHawk25

  • Jok only had 15 last night but he still provided than 1/3 of Valley's offense in a hard-fought 43-38 win at Waukee. He leads 4A in scoring by almost 4 ppg.

  • Herkuleez, I asked such a question with Rick Brown and he said Jok won't be assessed until April, after the Madness!!!

    LaoHawk

  • Thanks Lao ....seems like they could find a couple of hours to do that sooner, but whatever, I'm confident he'll end up with an appropriate grade based on the year he's having

Well, they apparently found a couple of hours to sit down and re-evaluate Jok.....and I was wrong in having confidence in their analysis. loco

  • Interesting that they have him as a small forward and not as a shooting guard. No matter, he helped his team to another close win in OT over DM North last night with 29 pts (four 3s). He signed with IA so it's a 76, if he had signed with a more recognized school, then it's at least +10 pts.

EPSN's rankings are weird. They differ from year to year. A 76 in 2012 would be a 1☆ recruit, in 2013 its a mid 3☆. It doesn't make much sense. I equate what Jok is doing to my hometown kid last year who signed with Akron, Reggie McAdams. Long, athletic and can really shot the 3. He scored a 3☆ ranking of 89 last year. Oh and both are 6'6 190lbs. Go figure.

  • I agree, he definitely would have gotten the "bonus" points if he'd been recruited by UNC, Kansas or sparty....but still, to have him at a '76' after re-evaluating him, that's just terrible analysis. I'm not saying he's back to the level he was as a freshman prospect, with the spring/explosion, but he's back to 90-95% of that. He was once listed as a Top 5 prospect, not at his position or in the state, a Top 5 prospect....period. That means he was projected as a 95+ grade. Doing simple math, 90% of 95 is 85.5 ...and that's where he should be graded at minimum.

A '76' grade, according to ESPN:

    70-79: Mid-major plus prospect (3 stars)
Player is a fringe high-major recruit who contributes or a standout mid-level recruit.

A '85' grade, according to ESPN:

    85-89: High-major prospect (4 stars)
Player is the centerpiece to a high-major program who starts three to four years.

Which one do you all think is a better description of Jok?

  • On a side note, it appears 247Sports has also finally evaluated Jok.... at an '80' ....although, they still haven't assigned a national/state/position ranking to him.

What I find really interesting is that per the 247Composite ranking, he is #3 in the state!!!

    ESPN has him at #1.
Rivals has him at a 'no rating'
Scout doesn't even offer a state ranking.

If he's not the #1 player in the state right now I'll eat McLovin's briefs.

    **UPDATE**

247 has ranked Jok...(Iowa's Mr. Basketball)...as the #3 prospect in the state, behind Dondre Alexander and Jeremy Morgan.

  • How is Dondre a 4 star? He can ball, but he really tones it down at times.

Edit: just realized this is the composite score. Probably has something more to do with Scout or ESPN.

He's rated an 89 by 247. Like you said, the Composite score is higher because of how some of the other sites rated him.
