JUCO DL question for Todd or anyone...

  • Just a question out of pure curiosity. I looked at Iowa State's commitment list and noticed Ishmail Hayes - a 4 star JUCO DE out of Texas. Anyone know anything about him or why he doesn't have anymore offers or if Iowa ever looked at him? With our need for immediate impact dlinemen just wondering if Iowa ever looked into this guy? Thanks!

I haven't heard of any mutual interest between Hayes and the Hawkeyes.

  • Thanks Todd, hadn't heard his name mentioned so I didn't figure Iowa had looked into him much but at 6'6" 250+ and a 4.7ish 40 he seems like he could make an immediate impact somewhere. Congrats to ISU I guess. (Disclaimer - I haven't seen any film or anything, just going off of measurables and a 4-star 94 ranking.)

  • I believe the word is he'll cut it pretty close for qualifying.

  • I use to think if ISU can recruit him, than we can have him but I've been hearing that Paul Rhodes is the coolest coach you could play for. Congrats to them, too bad we can't land a stud JUCO RB

Coach Rhoads grew up in Ankeny. Of course he's cool.

Thought that might play a factor. I was pretty shocked when I went to their commit list and saw a 94 rating 4-star guy. You would think someone like that would get more attention.

Just based on perusing Cyfan it seems the general concensus of their fanbase is that he'll just barely qualify.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Iowa typically doesn't target JUCO players. Sheffield, Caldwell and Simmons all had atypical situations that led the Hawkeyes to reach out.

In addition to Hayes, Iowa State got LB Eddie Porter who also went to Blinn C.C (Cam Newton's juco). Porter is a consensus 3 star LB and decommitted from Texas A&M before committing to state.

Hayes' ratings are all over the place, from not rated, to a 2 star, a 3 star and the lofty 4star (94) with 247. Both of these players were wanted by a lot of colleges, especially Porter who had many big time offers. One site had Porter rated the 26th best juco player, while Hayes was 36th. Good gets for the Cyclones.

Thanks for the info! It's interesting, with the great need for dlinemen for next year and with missing out on Sheffield, you would think the coaches wouldn't leave any stones unturned. I'm sure there is more to the story but hadn't heard anything about this kid. I know we don't typically go after JUCO players, but this year seems like it is almost a necessity along the dline.
